Kinetics of proliferative processes induced by phytohemagglutinin in irradiated lymphocytes

The kinetics of the induced process of normal and exposed human lymphocytes to DNA synthesis and mitosis has been analyzed in detail. It was shown that the capacity of the exposed lymphocytes of repeated entering the phase of DNA synthesis was sharply decreased and the average length of the prereplicative period increased.     

Characteristics and clinical value of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases]

The literature data and the findings of the authors' studies on the role of extended-spectrum bata-lactamases (ESBL) in providing the clinical effect in the treatment of infections due to ESBL-producing organisms were analyzed. The analysis allowed to consider the NCCLS recommendations not sufficiently valid. According to these recommendations the ESBL-producing organisms (among E. coli and Klebsiella spp.) should be regarded as resistant to penicillins, cephalosporins and aztreonam. Susceptibility of 62 Enterobacteriaceae strains that were isolated in 4 therapeutic centres of Tomsk, Nazran and Moscow and proved to be ESBL-producing organisms was tested and it was shown that the 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins could not be referred to a homogenous group. The same was confirmed by the prospective and retrospective investigations of a multiprofile hospital on the clinical and bacteriological efficacies of the 3rd generation cephalosporins and cefepime in the treatment of hospital-acquired infections due to Enterobacteriaceae strains producing ESBL.     

Kinetic behavior of slowly equilibrating association-dissociation enzyme systems]

The shape of the plots of product accumulation versus time (t) has been analysed for slowly equilibrating association-dissociation enzyme systems of the types 2p in equilibrium P (P is enzyme oligomer which is able to dissociate reversibly forming two identical halves p) and M in equilibrium M2 in equilibrium M2 in equilibrium... (M is monomer which has two association sites overlapping with active sites). It is assumed that the rate of equilibration between oligomeric forms is comparable with the rate of over-all enzymatic reaction and that substrate-oligomer complexes are in rapid equilibrium with free components. It has been shown that characteristic feature of kinetic behavior of slowly equilibrating association-dissociation enzyme systems is that the value of tau depends on enzyme concentration (tau is the intercept on t-axis for linear asymptota of the curve of product concentration versus time at t leads to infinity).     

Statistical indices in medicine and epidemiology and their classification

Mathematical statistics deals with abstract notions, while medicine solves complicated and many-sided problems. For this reason medical statistics faces some moot points in the interpretation of a number of notions and the classification of statistical indices. In the present article the definition of variables and statistical indices is formulated and their characterization is given. An attempt is made to provide the systematization and natural classification of the latter. Statistical indices are defined as the characteristics of statistical totalities. To classify statistical indices, the most essential signs are used: the character of a variable (external relations), the trend of study (internal content), the form of expression (calculation), derived indices and characteristics (comparison and the results of analysis).     

Clinical efficacy of a novel antimicrobial drug combination containing ciprofloxacin and tinidazole in the treatment of patients with skin and soft tissue infections]

Clinical and microbiological efficacies of a combined drug, a fixed combination of ciprofloxacin and tinidazole in the form of tablets (Cifran ST, Ranbaxy, India) were studied. The drug was given to 40 patients with skin and soft tissue infections in the complex surgical treatment. The clinical effect and bacteriological efficacy were observed in 97.5 and 75% of the cases respectively. The drug tolerability was good and no adverse reactions were stated.     

Study of factors determining the clonogenic capacity of irradiated cells by computer simulation

The methods of the multifactor disperse analysis of the results of studies of the simulation model of the effect of ionizing radiation on cell populations were used to study the role of some characteristics of the stationary culture in its response to a single radiation effect. The clonogenic capacity of cells was used as a criterion for assessing the biological effect of radiation. "The share of resting cells" was a predominant factor influencing the survival of irradiated cell populations.
