Wood anatomy was examined in 16 species of Meryta (a genus of c . 35 species) and bark anatomy was studied in 12 species. All but two of these taxa form an assemblage corresponding to the Northern Arc clade, one of two major groups identified by a recent molecular phylogenetic study. M. sinclairii and M. tenuifolia (corresponding to the New Zealand/Fiji clade) differ distinctly by having more numerous simple perforation plates, multiseriate rays with few marginal rows, and the absence of sclerified cells in collapsed secondary phloem, a bark feature that has not yet been found elsewhere in Araliaceae. The increase in abundance of simple perforation plates in the wood of these two species is not accompanied by a decrease in the number of bars on scalariform perforation plates. The wood structure of Meryta bears a strong resemblance to members of the Pacific Schefflera clade, sharing similar ranges of variation of several features. Bark characters, such as the diameter of the cortical secretory canals, the types of crystal in cortical cells, the types of axial parenchyma cell in collapsed secondary phloem, and the presence of sheath cells by phloem rays, appear to be of diagnostic value for some species of Meryta .  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 363–379.  相似文献

1. Globally, vast areas of forest are currently threatened by Lymantria dispar L. and Phytophthora species, which cause widespread declines and cascading ecological impacts. One important aim of evolutionary and ecological studies is to understand their interactions. 2. The present study tests whether Quercus rubra L. trees naturally infected with P. plurivora T. Jung & T.I. Burgess or free of infection are more suitable for L. dispar herbivory, and if relationships between L. dispar performance and herbivory may vary depending on whether trees are infected or free of infection. 3. In choice tests, the consumed area of leaves from trees infected by P. plurivora was four times larger than that from non‐infected trees, probably because the increased values of N, soluble protein, and water content observed in the leaves of infected trees enhanced acceptability. Although larval performance was better in Phytophthora‐infected trees, relationships between larval performance and defoliation did not significantly interact with the health status of trees. 4. The present results suggest that the impact of P. plurivora on natural and managed ecosystems may generate a positive feedback loop for oak decline. The link between the behavioural and physiological responses of L. dispar to infected trees and the population growth in nature deserves further investigation.  相似文献

Abstract: Direct studies of mammalian carnivores are challenging due to the animals' secretive nature and the high costs associated with their capture and handling. Use of noninvasive hair sampling to survey these reclusive species has great potential as an alternative, with wide applicability in ecology and conservation. Hair-trapping has been extensively used for focal studies of temperate mammals, but its use and applicability as a means to survey mammals in tropical environs has never been addressed. We evaluated the effectiveness of 2 hair-trap types and 2 scents along an elevational gradient within El Cielo Biosphere Reserve (ECBR, Mexico) to detect presence of carnivores. Hair-traps that used roofing nails as a hair-collecting surface collected more hairs and detected a greater number of species than did hair-traps that used velcro strips. Different scent treatments (commercial fragrance and catnip oil) did not differ for these same variables. Of successful nail hair-traps, 60% collected ≥20 hairs (max. = 439), providing enough material for DNA analyses. Hair-trap surveys detected 74% of the potential target mammal species at ECBR with only 19 days of field effort. Developing countries have limited budgets for biodiversity monitoring and hair-traps compare favorably with other methods with a high cost-benefit ratio. Hair-traps are inexpensive, portable, can be made with over-the-counter materials, and can be successfully used to collect data applicable to population and genetic studies of tropical carnivores.  相似文献

1. Chronic nitrogen (N) deposition may alter the bioavailability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in streams by multiple pathways. Elevated N deposition may alter the nutrient stoichiometry of DOM as well as nutrient availability in stream water. 2. We evaluated the influence of a decadal‐scale experimental N enrichment on the relative importance of DOM nutrient content and inorganic nutrient availability on the bioavailability of DOM. We measured the consumption of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and changes in nutrient concentration, DOM components and enzyme activity in a bottle incubation assay with different DOM and nutrient treatments. To evaluate the effect of DOM stoichiometry, we used leaf leachates of different carbon/N/phosphorus (C : N :P) ratio, made from leaf litter sourced in the reference and N‐enriched catchments at the Bear Brook Watershed in Maine (BBWM). We also manipulated the concentration of inorganic N and P to compare the effect of nutrient enrichment with DOM stoichiometry. 3. DOC from the N‐enriched catchment was consumed 14% faster than that from the reference catchment. However, mean DOC consumption for both leachates was more than doubled by the simultaneous addition of N and P, compared to controls, while the addition of N or P alone increased consumption by 42 and 23%, respectively. The effect of N and/or P enrichment consistently had a greater effect than DOM source for all response variables considered. 4. We subsequently conducted DOC uptake measurements using leaf leachate addition under ambient and elevated N and P in the streams draining the reference and N‐enriched catchments at BBWM. In both streams, DOC uptake lengths were shorter when N and P were elevated. 5. Although both DOM stoichiometry and inorganic nutrient availability affect DOM bioavailability, N and P co‐limitation appears to be the dominant driver of reach‐scale processing of DOM.  相似文献

On the basis of well preserved specimens from the Lower Silurian of the Tarim Basin, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Shiqian County, Guizhou Province, People's Republic of China we describe in detail the histological structure of sinacanthid spines, the only known remains of a group of fishes common in Silurian strata from China. The sinacanthids have previously been assigned either to the acanthodians or to the chondrichthyans. The spine structure is composed of an outer layer of atubular dentine and an inner layer of globular calcified cartilage, and the nature and distribution of these tissues indicates that the spines were formed as a result of interaction between the endoskeleton and dermoskeleton. The tissue distribution and style of growth described herein places the sinacanthids crownwards of the placoderms, and possibly within the total group Chondrichthyes. However, before they can be firmly placed within a phylogenetic scheme, further evidence is required both on the general anatomy of sinacanthids and on the nature of chondrichthyan apomorphies.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 144 , 379–386.  相似文献

The taxonomy of the fringe-toed lizards of the Acanthodactylus scutellatus group has long been unstable and no consensus exists on the systematic status of its various forms. A multivariate analysis of morphological characters, performed on over 1000 specimens from most of the African range of this group, allowed us to clarify the specific allocation of most of the Saharan populations included in this species group. Based on comparisons of morphology between allopatric and sympatric populations of this complex, we propose the recognition of six biological species. Our results confirm the specific status of Acanthodactylus aureus , A. dumerili , A. scutellatus, A. longipes and the recently described A. taghitensis . In addition, we re-validate A. senegalensis (occurring from Mauritania and Mali south to Senegal), which has been treated as a synonym of A. dumerili by previous authors. Acanthodactylus longipes is reported for the first time from coastal Mauritania, and A. taghitensis (previously known only from a very small region in Algeria) is reported from continental Mauritania. The systematic section of this paper includes a full list of examined material, diagnosis and known distribution of each species, in addition to some information on geographical variation and ecology. Earth system models associate the ongoing global warming with increasing frequency and intensity of extreme events such as droughts and heat waves. The carbon balance of soils may be more sensitive to the impact of such extremes than to homogeneously distributed changes in soil temperature (Ts) or soil water content (θs). One parameter influenced by more pronounced drying/rewetting cycles or increases in Ts is the wettability of soils. Results from laboratory and field studies showed that low θs, particularly in combination with high Ts can increase soil water repellency (SWR). Recent studies have provided evidence that the stability of soil organic matter (SOM) against microbial decomposition is substantially enhanced in water repellent soils. This review hypothesizes that SWR is an important SOM stabilization mechanism that could become more important because of the increase in extreme events. We discuss wettability‐induced changes in soil moisture distribution and in soil aggregate turnover as the main mechanisms explaining the reduced mineralization of SOM with increasing SWR. The creation of preferential flow paths and subsequent uneven penetration of rainwater may cause a long‐term reduction of soil water availability, affecting both microorganisms and plants. We conclude that climate change‐induced SWR may intensify the effects of climatic drought and thus affects ecosystem processes such as SOM decomposition and plant productivity, as well as changes in vegetation and microbial community structure. Future research on biosphere–climate interactions should consider the effects of increasing SWR on soil moisture and subsequently on both microbial activity and plant productivity, which ultimately determine the overall carbon balance.  相似文献

If the plasma membrane and its associated transport proteins are solely responsible for maintenance of the asymmetric solute distribution then disruption of the plasma membrane would quickly lead to the symmetric distribution of all unattached inorganic ions between the cell and the extracellular environment. To test this hypothesis fresh pig lenses were incubated in Hanks ’ balanced salt solution in either absence or presence of non-ionic detergents (0.2 % Triton X-100 or 0.2 % Brij 58). Both detergents caused permeabilization of every lens fiber cell as shown by electron microscopy. The flux kinetics of K+, Mg2 +, Na+, Ca2 +, water and protein out of and into the permeabilized lens fiber cells was measured. Triton X-100 caused a faster flux rate of all solutes than did Brij 58. The Triton X-100 induced flux of solutes and water was associated with a decrease in lens ATP. Incubation of untreated lenses in solutions of different osmotic pressures at 0 °C demonstrated that the major fraction of lens water was osmotically unresponsive. Thus the asymmetric distribution of solutes in lens fiber cells is dependent on an intact plasma membrane and on a co-operative ATP-dependent association between K+, Mg2 +, water and cytomatrix proteins.  相似文献

Many sex differences in the regulation of reproductive functionin rats are the result of a differentiation of the brain whichoccurs neonatally. Although injections of either androgens orestrogens are capable during the neonatal period of alteringhypothalamic systems involved in reproductive behavior and gonadotropinregulation, the physiological role of each type of hormone hasnot been clearly established. In both sexes, circulating estrogensare normally kept from interacting with estrogen receptors inthe limbic brain by the high levels of alpha-fetoprotein inthe blood. The local aromatization of androgens in the braincould circumvent alpha-fetoprotein, since androgens do not bindto this serum protein. The "paromatization hypothesis" statesthat testosterone, which is abundant in neonatal male circulationbut absent in females, is locally converted to estradiol inthe limbic brain. There it binds to estrogen receptor proteinsto produce tissue differentiation. The ontogeny of estradiolbinding proteins in limbic areas is consistent with the aromatizationhypothesis, with a rapid increase in receptor levels occurringshortly after birth. Also, the presence of endogenous estradiol-receptorcomplexes has been demonstrated in the cell nuclei of male neonatesbut not female neonales. Furthermore, the presence of estradiolbinding proteins in other regions of the neonatal male and femalebrain suggests an additional role of estradiol. unknown as ofyet. Several studies with agents which block the aromatizationof androgens to estrogens or the binding of estrogens to theirreceptors are consistent with the aromatization hypothesis,since these agents prevent the differentiation of intact neonatalmales. However, specific androgen binding proteins are alsopresent in neonatal brains, and androgen-receptor complexescan be found in cell nuclei of neonates after an injection oftritiated androgen. The possible involvement of these receptorsin sexual differentiation of the brain is suggested by the findingthat an antiandrogen inhibits both the binding of androgens(but not estrogens) and the differentiation of males.  相似文献
