MODELING CONSUMER INTENTION TO PURCHASE FRESH PRODUCE

The effect of some fresh‐cut carrot label attributes on consumer purchase intention was evaluated using conjoint analysis. The following three attributes were chosen and manipulated: price (high and low), packaging type (polyethylene bags and expanded polystyrene trays) and production process (organic with certification stamp, organic without certification stamp and no information). A complete factorial design was used, and 12 hypothetical packages of fresh‐cut carrot were developed and evaluated by 96 consumers based on their purchase intention. The consumers were divided into four groups with different opinions. Low price and organic with certification label were the favorite choices of the groups. Only one group preferred expanded polystyrene trays. No interactions were exhibited among the attributes in all groups.     

The allelic isozymes of hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase isolated from Fundulus heteroclitus: physical characteristics and kinetic properties

Hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (H6PDH-A2; beta-D-glucose:NAD(P)+ oxido-reductase; E.C. 1.1.1.47) of the teleost Fundulus heteroclitus (L.) shows clinal allelic variation along the east coast of North America. Three of the major allelic isozymes have been purified and compared for native molecular weight, subunit molecular weight, isoelectric point, thermal stability, and steady-state kinetic properties (pH 8.0 and 25 degrees C). Significant differences were found among the allelic isozymes for isoelectric point, thermal stability, and some kinetic parameters. The predominant allelic isozyme in northern populations (H6PDH-AcAc) was found to be more sensitive to heat denaturation than were the predominant homozygous allelic isozymes isolated from southern populations (H6PDH-AaAa and H6PDH-AbAb). The H6PDH-AcAc allelic isozyme had both a significantly greater Km for glucose-6-phosphate than did either of the southern phenotypes and a significantly greater Km for NADP+ and Ki of NAD+ than did one of the southern phenotypes (H6PDH-AaAa). While the allelic isozymes are functionally nonequivalent, it is not yet known whether these differences are reflected at higher levels of biological organization.      

Twelve microsatellite markers developed in woundfin (Plagopterus argentissimus), an endangered warmwater fish of the lower Colorado River basin

Woundfin (Plagopterus argentissimus) is one of several endangered warmwater fishes once common to the lower Colorado River basin. Dexter National Fish Hatchery & Technology Center maintains a refugium stock founded in 1982, and augmented with c. 1000 young fish in 1989. Genetic characterization of the refugium stock and salvaged fish from the Virgin River is necessary to develop a strategy to incorporate salvaged fish into the hatchery stock. We developed an enriched microsatellite library and 12 species‐specific polymorphic loci. Alleles per locus ranged from 10 to 19, averaging 13. The average expected and observed heterozygosities were 0.884 and 0.895, respectively.
