Tanabe, K., Landman, N.H. & Kruta, I. 2011: Microstructure and mineralogy of the outer calcareous layer in the lower jaws of Cretaceous Tetragonitoidea and Desmoceratoidea (Ammonoidea). Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 191–199. Based on the differences in their relative size, overall shape, structure and the degree of development of an outer calcified covering, lower jaws of the Ammonoidea have been classified into four morphotypes: normal, anaptychus, aptychus and rhynchaptychus types. However, detailed microstructural and mineralogical comparison of these morphotypes has not yet been addressed. This article documents the results of SEM and XRD observations of the lower jaws of three Late Cretaceous ammonoid species belonging to the Tetragonitoidea (Anagaudryceras limatum) and Desmoceratoidea (Pachydiscus kamishakensis and Damesites aff. sugata), based on excellent material preserved in situ within the body chamber, and retaining an aragonitic shell wall. The lower jaws of the three species are assigned to an intermediate form between anaptychus and aptychus types for the first two species and the rhynchaptychus type for the third species. Their black, presumably originally chitinous outer lamella is wholly covered with a calcareous layer. The calcareous layer is composed of aragonite in D. aff. sugata and A. limatum, and calcite in P. kamishakensis. The microstructure of the outer calcareous layer differs among the three species, i.e. granular in A. limatum, spherulitic prismatic in D. sugata, and prismatic in P. kamishakensis, all of which can be distinguished from the lamellar and spongy structure of the outer‐paired calcitic plates of the typical aptychus‐type lower jaws in some Jurassic and Cretaceous Ammonitina and Ancyloceratina. Our study suggests that most Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonoids possessed an outer calcareous layer in their lower jaws, although its mineralogy, microstructure and relative thickness vary among different taxa. □Ammonoidea, Cretaceous, Desmoceratoidea, lower jaw, microstructure, Tetragonitoidea.  相似文献

Abstract: From December 2001 to December 2004 we monitored 30–44 adult female mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) annually to assess the factors affecting survival and cause-specific mortality. We found adult female survival of 0.63 (SE = 0.08), 0.90 (SE = 0.05), and 0.91 (SE = 0.04), 2002–2004, respectively. Starvation was the most common cause of mortality, accounting for 11/23 mortalities. Mean ingesta-free body fat (IFBF) levels of adult females in December were low (6–9%), despite few (0–13%) lactating adult females, indicative of extremely nutritionally deficient summer—autumn ranges throughout the study site. A priori levels of IFBF and rump body condition scores (rBCS) were higher in deer that survived the following year regardless of cause of mortality. Logistical analysis indicated that models containing individual body fat, rBCS, mean population body fat, winter precipitation, precipitation during mid- to late gestation, and total annual precipitation were related (x2 ≥ 9.1; P ≤ 0.003) to deer survival, with individual IFBF (β =-0.47 [SE = 0.21]; odds ratio = 0.63 [0.42-0.94]) and population mean IFBF (β = -1.94 [SE = 0.68]; odds ratio = 0.14 [0.04-0.54]) the best predictors; with either variable, probability of dying decreased as fat levels increased. Fawn production was low (2–29 fawns/100 ad F) and, combined with adult survival, resulted in estimated population rates of increase of -35%, -5%, and +6% for 2002–2004, respectively. Deer survival and population performance were limited in north-central New Mexico, USA, due to poor condition of deer, likely a result of limited food resulting from both drought and long-term changes in plant communities. Precipitation during mid- to late gestation was also important for adult female survival in north-central New Mexico.  相似文献

Identification of Surface Proteins on Viable Plasmodium knowlesi Merozoites   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Viable merozoites of Plasmodium knowlesi were isolated and the proteins that were labeled on intact merozoites by lactoperoxidase-catalyzed radioiodination were identified. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and autoradiography of Triton soluble extracts of labeled merozoites demonstrated eight major bands ranging in apparent molecular weight from 150,000 D to 22,000 D. Exposure of intact merozoites to trypsin (10 μg/ml) for 10 min resulted in the loss of the two highest molecular weight proteins (150,000 D and 105,000 D) and the appearance of two new bands at 70,000 D and 62,000 D. Trypsin treatment under these conditions also removed the receptor(s) for merozoite attachment to erythrocytes. Therefore, these high molecular weight proteins are candidates for the merozoite component that attaches to erythrocytes. There was no evidence that the labeled membrane components were serum or erythrocyte membrane components, two potential contaminants in the preparation. Anti-rhesus erythrocyte antibody did not precipitate labeled merozoite proteins. Furthermore, the immunoprecipitation of labeled merozoite proteins by rhesus anti-merozoite serum was not inhibited by erythrocyte ghosts.  相似文献

In agonistic interactions with conspecifics, skunk loaches (Botia horae) typically exhibit lateral displays, attacks, and produce a sound (a “click”). Four experiments were conducted to determine the functional significance of the click sound. Behaviors of resident fish were monitored while characteristics of their shelter and the size or type of intruder fish introduced were varied. Manipulations in the four experiments involved: 1) the configuration of the available shelter; 2) the size or recent history of intruder fish; 3) playbacks of “click” sounds or aquarium noise; or 4) muting of resident fish. Lateral displays, attacks, and sounds produced by residents were monitored, and the responses of residents were analyzed in terms of the functional significance of “click” sounds to juvenile skunk loaches.  相似文献

  • 1 Studies were performed to assess the acclimation of the stream-bed heterotrophic microflora to sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) typical of its environment and microfloral responses to pulses of DOM.
  • 2 Microcosm measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) uptake, dissolved oxygen uptake. ATP concentration and epitluorescence microscopic counts (EMC) were performed using stream-bed sediments and heterogeneous dissolved organic matter (DOM) sources.
  • 3 Three study sites included an undisturbed woodlot spring seep, a small stream traversing a cattle pasture and a larger stream draining a catchment used for silage crops, pastures and woodlands.
  • 4 The DOM sources were cold water extracts of forest floor leaf litter, bovine manure, the green alga Ulothrix and jewel weed (Impaliens capensis L.) leaves.
  • 5 DOC uptake occurring in 2.5–5.0 h incubations indicated an acclimation of the microflora at each site to DOM sources generated by surrounding land use.
  • 6 The sediment microflora from the larger stream did not readily metabolize bovine manure DOM and the latter was used in an acclimation experiment.
  • 7 A minimum of 48 h of cumulative exposure to bovine manure DOM at 15–20°C were required to yield measurable changes in sediment microbial activity of sediment microbial biomass.
  • 8 The same microflora retained an ability to readily metabolize the added DOM source after 72 h of exposure to unamended stream water.
  • 9 The time frame of microfloral responses during acclimation indicated that changes leading to the metabolism of a DOM source were initially enzymatic and eventually involved growth and selection for specific decomposers within the microbial community.
  • 10 We conclude that in order to utilize naturally occurring pulses of carbon and energy, stream-bed heterotrophs must be already enzymatically prepared, induced, when the pulse occurs.

Human erythrocytes infected with five strains of Plasmodium falciparum and Aotus erythrocytes infected with three strains of P. falciparum were studied by thin-section and freeze-fracture electron microscopy. All strains of P. falciparum we studied induced electron-dense conical knobs, measuring 30–40 nm in height and 90–100 nm in diameter on erythrocyte membranes. Freeze-fracture demonstrated that the knobs were distributed over the membrane of both human and Aotus erythrocytes. A distinct difference was seen between the intramembrane particle (IMP) distribution over the knobs of human and Aotus erythrocyte membranes. There was no change in IMP distribution in infected human erythrocyte membranes, but infected Aotus erythrocytes showed an aggregation of IMP over the P face of the knobs with a clear zone at the base. This difference in IMP distribution was related only to the host species and not to parasite strains. Biochemical analysis demonstrated that a higher proportion of band 3 was bound to the cytoskeleton of uninfected Aotus erythrocytes than uninfected human erythrocytes after Triton X-100 extraction. This may account for the different effects of P. falciparum infection on IMP distribution in the two different cell types.  相似文献

The Radial and Longitudinal Path of Ion Movement in Roots   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The existence of a barrier to lateral outward diffusion of ions from roots was demonstrated quantitatively and by autoradiography. Ions applied to the apical zone were excreted through the basal cut end with no lateral outward diffusion from the central zone. The ions moving through the conducting tissues showed no leakage to the external solution regardless whether the treatment roots came from seedlings grown under low or high salt conditions. However, when dinitrophenol (DNP) was also applied to the central zone in the external salt solution, leakage of apically applied calcium occurred from the conducting tissues. Autoradiographic studies with labeled calcium suggested that the endodermal layer was an effective barrier preventing the lateral outward diffusion of ions. The ions moved longitudinally through the stele. In the stelar tissues the autoradiographic studies failed to detect the presence of any radioactive calcium in the central duct and in the mature xylem vessels, although high concentrations of labeled ions were found in the living cells of the stele, particularly the xylem parenchyma. It is suggested that xylem parenchyma cells may be involved in the longitudinal transport of ions.  相似文献
