Freeze fracturing of Myxosporidian spores reveals the occurrence of a continuous layer of transmembrane particles all over the surface area of the valve cells which form the spore envelope. These particles are densely packed all over the P face membrane. Due to their polygonal outline, their diameter (6-7 nm) and their central core, they resemble the particles forming the connections of gap junctions which metabolically couple the neighboring cells in animal tissues. In the present report, the role of the transmembrane particles is still hypothetical. However, they might represent a membrane structural specialization of the spores which are submitted to osmotic variations of the fluid external medium. Furthermore similar transmembrane particles are observed at the level of the septate junction which seals the valve cells. In this occurrence, they are arranged in a series of 40 double rows parallel to the suture of the spore envelope. These findings support the view that Myxosporidia are Metazoa and raise the problem of their origin. 相似文献

Climate warming is expected to shift bioclimatic zones and plant species distribution. Yet, few studies have explored whether seedling establishment is a possible bottleneck for future migration and population resilience. We test how warming affects the early stages of seedling establishment in 10 plant species in subarctic tundra. To zoom into the life phases where the effects of warming actually take place, we used a novel approach of breaking down the whole‐season warming effect into full factorial combination of early‐, mid‐, and late‐season warming periods. Seeds were sown in containers placed under field conditions in subarctic heath and were exposed to 3 °C elevation of surface temperature and 30% addition of summer precipitation relative to ambient. Heating was achieved with Free Air Temperature Increase systems. Whole‐season heating reduced germination and establishment, significantly in four out of 10 species. The whole‐season warming effect originated from additive effects of individual periods, although some of the periods had disproportionally stronger influence. Early‐germinating species were susceptible to warming; the critical phases were early summer for germination and mid summer for seedling survival. Graminoids, which emerged later, were less susceptible although some negative effects during late summer were observed. Some species with intermediate germination time were affected by all periods of warming. Addition of water generally could not mitigate the negative effects of whole‐season heating, but at individual species level both strengthening and amelioration of these negative effects were observed. We conclude that summer warming is likely to constrain seedling recruitment in open micro sites, which is a common seed regeneration niche in tundra ecosystem. Importantly, we described both significant temporal and species‐specific variation in the sensitivity of seedling establishment to warming which needs to be taken into consideration when modelling population dynamics and vegetation transitions in a warmer climate. 相似文献

1. The aim of ecological risk assessments is to evaluate the likelihood that ecosystems are adversely affected by human‐induced disturbance that brings the ecosystem into a new dynamic equilibrium with a simpler structure and lower potential energy. The risk probability depends on the threshold capacity of the system (resistance) and on the capacity of the system to return to a state of equilibrium (resilience). 2. There are two complementary approaches to assessing ecological risks of riverine landscape dynamics. The reductionist approach aims at identifying risk to the ecosystem on the basis of accumulated data on simple stressor–effect relationships. The holistic approach aims at taking the whole ecosystem performance into account, which implies meso‐scale analysis. 3. Landscape patterns and their dynamics represent the physical framework of processes determining the ecosystem's equilibrium. Assessing risks of landscape dynamics to riverine ecosystems implies addressing complex interactions of system components (e.g. population dynamics and biogeochemical cycles) occurring at multiple scales of space and time. 4. One of the most important steps in ecological risk assessment is to establish clear assessment endpoints (e.g. vital ecosystem and landscape attributes). Their formulation must recognise that riverine ecosystems are dynamic, structurally complex and composed of both deterministic and stochastic components. 5. Remote sensing (geo)statistics and geographical information systems are primary tools for quantifying spatial and temporal components of riverine ecosystem and landscape attributes. 6. The difficulty to experiment at the riverine landscape level means that ecological risk management is heavily dependent on models. Current models are targeted towards simulating ecological risk at levels ranging from single species to habitats, food webs and meta‐populations to ecosystems and entire riverine landscapes, with some including socio‐economic considerations. 相似文献

1. Size variations in pollinator populations may modify competitive interactions among foragers. Competition among pollinators has been shown to lead to one of two contrasting behaviours: either specialisation to the most profitable plant species or generalisation to several species. When foraging, pollinators are also confronted with heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of plant resources. Because variations in both the forager density and plant spatial distribution can affect pollinator behaviour, focus was on the interactive effect of these two factors. 2. Bumble bee (Bombus terrestris L.) individuals were trained on a focal species (Lotus corniculatus L.) and experimentally tested whether variations in the forager density (two or six bumble bees foraging together), plant community spatial distribution (two plant species: L. corniculatus and Medicago sativa, which were either patchily or randomly distributed), and their interaction modified bumble bee foraging behaviour. 3. It was shown that when confronted with a high forager density, bumble bees focused their visits towards the most familiar species, especially when foraging under a random plant distribution. These modifications affected the fruiting of the focal plant species, with a significantly lower reproductive success under low density/patchy conditions. 4. This study demonstrates that the foraging decisions of bumble bees are influenced by variations in both the conspecific density and plant spatial distribution. Given the increasing impact of human activities on plant‐pollinator communities, this raises the question of the potential implications of these results for plant communities in natural conditions when confronted with variations in the pollinator density and spatial distribution of plants. 相似文献

Using data obtained through anatomy and morphology, we used cladistics to examine the monophyly of Senghas's proposed classification of Maxillaria cushion plants and his placement of Mormolyca ringens. Trignidium obtusum was chosen as the outgroup. Leaves have multicellular hairs sunken in crypts, primarily anomocytic or primarily tetracytic stomatal apparatuses, homogeneous mesophyll, and scattered fibre bundles. Three types of adaxial hypodermis were observed: (1) water-storage cells, (2) fibre bundles scattered among water-storage cells, and (3) fibre bundles scattered among chlorenchymatous cells. Abaxial hypodermis of fibre bundles occurs in several Maxillaria species and in Trigonidium obtusum. At the midvein of the leaf, adaxial mesophyll cells of most species are anticlinally extended and empty, and the abaxial mesophyll is usually collenchymatous. Vascular bundles are collateral and usually in a single series. Pseudobulb epidermal cell walls are thin, or outer walls are thickened. Ground tissue consists of water-storage and assimilatory cells with vascular bundles and associated lacunae scattered throughout. Roots are velamentous and exodermal cell walls are usually n-thickened with tenuous bands of scalarifom thickenings on longitudinal walls. Tilosomes may be plaited, baculate, or spongy. Endodermal cell walls are usually U-thickened and pericycle cell walls are usually O-thickened opposite phloem sectors. Stegmata line the periphery of the thickened pericycle cells opposite phloem sectors in M. picta. Pith may be parenchymatous or sclerenchymatous. According to our phylogenetic analysis, Mormolyca ringens is consistently nested within the cladistic structure of Maxillaria. Therefore, Maxillaria likely is paraphyletic if Mormolyca ringens is recognized as generically distinct. It appears that Senghas's subgroup divisions of the unifoliate pseudobulbous maxillarias may also be artificial. 相似文献

The notochord of anuran amphibian embryos, treated according to the procedure of Falk et al. (1962) in early stages, exhibits the characteristic formaldehyde-induced fluorescence of catecholamines. Neurectodermal derivatives, such as the neural tube and neural crests are known to synthesize catecholamines in more advanced stages. For determination of the influence of these neurectodermal derivatives on the formation of catecholamines in the notochord, exogastrulation experiments were performed on Xenopus laevis embryos. In exogastrulated embryos, the differentiation of neural derivatives was inhibited. Treatment of such exogastrulae with formaldehyde vapours shows that, in the absence of the neural tube and neural crests, the notochord developed similar fluorescence to that observed in normal embryos. Thus, these neurectodermal derivatives do not seem to be required for the formation of notochordal catecholamines. 相似文献
