We analysed patterns of animal dispersal, vicariance and diversification in the Holarctic based on complete phylogenies of 57 extant non‐marine taxa, together comprising 770 species, documenting biogeographic events from the Late Mesozoic to the present. Four major areas, each corresponding to a historically persistent landmass, were used in the analyses: eastern Nearctic (EN), western Nearctic (WN), eastern Palaeoarctic (EP) and western Palaeoarctic (WP). Parsimony‐based tree fitting showed that there is no significantly supported general area cladogram for the dataset. Yet, distributions are strongly phylogenetically conserved, as revealed by dispersal‐vicariance analysis (DIVA). DIVA‐based permutation tests were used to pinpoint phylogenetically determined biogeographic patterns. Consistent with expectations, continental dispersals (WP?EP and WN?EN) are significantly more common than palaeocontinental dispersals (WN?EP and EN?WP), which in turn are more common than disjunct dispersals (EN?EP and WN?WP). There is significant dispersal asymmetry both within the Nearctic (WN→EN more common than EN→WN) and the Palaeoarctic (EP→WP more common than WP→EP). Cross‐Beringian faunal connections have traditionally been emphasized but are not more important than cross‐Atlantic connections in our data set. To analyse changes over time, we sorted biogeographic events into four major time periods using fossil, biogeographic and molecular evidence combined with a ‘branching clock’. These analyses show that trans‐Atlantic distributions (EN‐WP) were common in the Early‐Mid Tertiary (70‐20 Myr), whereas trans‐Beringian distributions (WN‐EP) were rare in that period. Most EN‐EP disjunctions date back to the Early Tertiary (70‐45 Myr), suggesting that they resulted from division of cross‐Atlantic rather than cross‐Beringian distributions. Diversification in WN and WP increased in the Quaternary (< 3 Myr), whereas in EP and EN it decreased from a maximum in the Early‐Mid Tertiary.  相似文献

1. The influences of bacterial density and water temperature on the grazing activity of the ciliates Uronema sp. and Colpoda inflata were studied. The conditions assayed were two prey densities (106 and 4 × 107 bacteria ml?1) and three water temperatures (10, 15 and 22 °C). 2. The response of the ciliates was measured from changes in protistan biovolumes and specific clearance rates. At high prey density, both ciliates showed lower biovolumes as water temperature increased, while at low prey density this tendency was minimized. 3. At the intermediate temperature of 15 °C both ciliates filtered ten times more body volume when bacteria were scarce; however, the ingested bacteria were fewer than at high prey density. At low prey density, a decrease from 15 to 10 °C evidenced different strategies of the two ciliates, which led to a similar ingestion of bacteria: C. inflata reduced its specific clearance rates and increased its biovolume, while Uronema sp. did not show changes. At high prey density, an increase from 15 to 22 °C caused lower biovolumes and a noticeable increase in specific clearance rates in both ciliates, indicating opportunist behaviour.  相似文献

In previous work, Nunes and Dias (1980) demonstrated that lowsodium concentrations in the root medium of intact or decapitatedyoung sugar beet plants grown under controlled conditions modifiedleaf water relations and increased leaf area and dry weight.The present study confirms these findings and presents furtherresults concerning the effect of salt on the concentrationsof the main osmotic substrates and on the structural and chemicalfractions of the cell dry weight. Increases of water and turgor potentials (0.25 MPa and 0.4 MPa,respectively) and a small decrease in osmotic potential (0.16MPa) were found in the leaves of salt treated plants. In theseplants, osmotic potentials estimated from the concentrationof ions and organic solutes in the leaf sap agree with thosemeasured showing that the observed increase in sodium concentrationmay account for the small decrease in the osmotic potential.No changes were detected in the concentration of orthophosphateor malic acid but total acidity of the leaf sap from salt treatedplants was significantly lower. It was found that all the main components of cell dry matter(total protein, soluble sugars, pigments and crude cell wall)contributed to the dry weight increase in the salt treated plants.Among the polysaccharide fractions of the cell wall, pectinsincreased significantly relative to hemicellulose and cellulose. A midday depression in net photosynthesis and in stomatal conductancewas observed when leaves of well-watered Vitis vinifera plantswere subjected to a diurnal pattern of variation in leaf temperatureand leaf-to-air water vapour pressure difference similar toa summer day, while photon flux density was kept constant at1450 µmolm–2 s–1,. When leaves were kept atconstant leaf temperature (22.5°C) and leaf-to-air watervapour presure difference (8.5 Pa kPa–1) at the same lightintensity, stomata opened with the onset of illumination andmaximal conductance and photosynthesis values were observedabout 1 h later. Subsequently, conductance and photosynthesisdecreased gradually. Leaf water potential never dropped below{macron}0.3 MPa. Leaves kept under constant environmental conditionsshowed an afternoon decline in photosynthesis at high internalCO2, in carboxylation efficiency and in maximum conductanceas well as an increase in stomatal sensitivity to CO2. Whenthe photon flux density during the day was reduced to 750 µmolm–2 s–1, the afternoon depression in gas exchangerates was attenuated. To evaluate the possible effects of highlight stress on changes in chloroplastic behaviour we comparedlight response curves of photosynthesis determined with an oxygenelectrode, in the morning and in the afternoon after the plantswere exposed to either high or moderate photon flux densities.A significant depression in photosynthetic capacity was foundby this method in high light treated leaves, but not in leavespreviously exposed to moderate photon flux density. Apparentquantum yield decreased in the afternoon, particularly afterexposure to high light. Maximum chlorophyll a fluorescence at22°C was reduced and the quenching of fluorescence afterreaching the peak was slower in the afternoon than in the morning,especially in high light-treated leaves. Changes in the patternsof chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics were observed after lighttreatment, i.e. in the afternoon, with oscillations either absent(after high light) or significantly reduced (after moderatelight) in comparison to the morning. The significance of theseresults is discussed and it is suggested that a direct inhibitoryeffect of high light at the chloroplast level provides the bestinterpretation for the observed afternoon decline in photosyntheticrate. SYNOPSIS The quantitative direct fluorescent antibody (QDFA) methods were employed for the antigenic analysis of bloodstream forms and culture procyclics of 2 variants, TRUM (Trypanosome Research University of Massachusetts) 106 and TRUM 107, of Trypanosoma brucei brucei. Intact and trypsinized trypanosomes were studied. It was demonstrated that: (A) The specific variant antigens are localized in the surface coat of bloodstream trypomastigotes. (B) In addition to the common antigens shared by bloodstream forms and culture procyclics, there are also certain antigens unique to these latter stages. (C) Still another group of antigens. not found in the culture procyclics, appears to be shared by the bloodstream forms, irrespective of their variant-specific antigens. These antigens may be present in part in the coat or on the cell membrane and in part within the cytoplasm. (D) Irrespective of the bloodstream-form variant from which they are derived, the procyclics are antigenically the same. The QDFA results are analyzed statistically and discussed in the light of the available literature.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. A new culture medium (SM), based on the amino-acid composition of tsetse hemolymph and containing fetal bovine serum, was designed for the maintenance of tsetse organs and the cultivation of various trypanosomatids. For optimum growth 20% (v/v) serum was required. The medium supported prolonged peristalsis of the alimentary tract and salivary glands of pre-emerged Glossina morsitans morsitans. In established cultures, derived from bloodstream forms of pleomorphic Trypanosoma brucei brucei and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense strains, inocula of ~ 106 procyclics/ml yielded 4–5 × 107 organisms/ml after 4 or 5 days of incubation at 28 C. Bloodstream forms of a cloned monomorphic T. b. brucei strain were also able to transform into procyclics, which, however, multiplied at a lower rate, with maximum yields of ~ 2 × 107 after 5 days. Cultures of Trypanosoma congolense and of a nearly monomorphic Trypanosoma brucei gambiense strains could be established in SM medium only in the presence of tsetse alimentary tract. The procyclic trypomastigotes of these species, adapted to SM medium and able to grow in it without Glossina organs, gave maximum populations of ~ 4.5 × 107 cells/ml. Promastigotes of Leishmania donovani, cultivated routinely in a diphasic Table's medium, multiplied actively upon being transferred into SM medium, producing yields of ~ 4 × 107 cells/ml.  相似文献

Evidence from field observations suggests that where stamen blight (Hapalosphaeria deformans Syd.) is prevalent dissemination of spores by wind may account for the establishment of the disease in initially healthy plantations. Nine polymorphic microsatellite loci were identified in the tropical plant Vasconcellea ×heilbornii and used to estimate allelic diversity in two populations of southern Ecuador. Allelic richness ranged from two to five alleles, observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.150 to 0.947 and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.186 to 0.701. Most of these markers also amplified microsatellite loci in two other Vasconcellea species (Vasconcellea stipulata and Vasconcellea cundinamarcensis). Hence, these markers will be useful for population genetic analysis and the evaluation of genetic diversity and gene flow in these species.  相似文献

Epyrini (Epyrinae) are the largest and morphologically most diverse group within Bethylidae. Evans' conception of Epyrini induces misclassification of several taxa and their diagnostic features, such as median lobe of clypeus projected, and fovea in lateroposterior angle of propodeal disc, are insufficient to place species in the tribe. No previous comprehensive cladistic study has recovered Epyrini as a clade, and no synapomorphies are reported for the tribe, suggesting that the group is artificial. We infer a phylogeny based on 391 informative morphological characters for 42 terminal taxa (31 ingroup, 11 outgroup). Monophyly of Epyrini is supported by a petiole with fused root and body as an autapomorphy. Anisepyris Kieffer, Laelius Ashmead, Holepyris Kieffer, Formosiepyris Terayama, Disepyris Kieffer, Bakeriella Kieffer and Trachepyris Kieffer were retrieved as monophyletic. Epyris Westwood and Chlorepyris Kieffer are paraphyletic. The addition of new characters was essential to define Epyrini, and the ventral region of the mesosoma, petiole and male genitalia may help to better understand genera and species limits. All resulting trees indicate that Epyrinae are polyphyletic. Tribes Epyrini and Sclerodermini are revalidated to subfamily status.  相似文献

1. The effects of long‐term nutrient addition at moderate levels were examined in the food web of a forested Mediterranean stream. Basal concentrations of N and P were increased twofold (to c. 750 μg N) and threefold (to c. 30 μg P) from ambient concentrations in an experimental reach. Variations in the abundance of microbes (bacteria and algae), meiofauna and macrofauna, microbial processing of organic matter (extracellular enzyme activities) and stoichiometry of biofilms and invertebrates were compared to an upstream control reach during 4 years of artificial nutrient enhancement. 2. Effects were faster in the bacterial compartment but more substantial in the algal compartment. Epilithic algal biomass doubled in the enriched section jointly triggered by nutrients and increased light irradiance in winter and early spring. Only a few animal groups reacted to the enrichment, including the meiofaunal Copepoda, linked to their high use of enriched FPOM, and macrofaunal grazers (Ancylus), which followed the large algal biomass increase. 3. The enrichment caused biofilm phosphatase activity to decrease, while activities related to the use of algal‐related materials (peptidase, β‐glucosidase) increased. Enzymatic activities related to the use of allochthonous organic matter showed only minor and episodic increases. 4. Changes in stoichiometric ratios were apparent in the epilithic compartment, but not in the sand sediment or in the FPOM. Increases in P content were delayed for 9 months in epilithic biofilms and for nearly 2 years in the case of N. 5. After 2 years of enrichment, the flatworm Schmidtea polychroa (predator), oligochaetes (detritivore) and tadpoles of Bufo bufo (grazer) showed higher per cent N. 6. Enrichment effects were produced in spite of flow cessations that occurred commonly in summer. The results show that forested streams subjected to sustained (though minor) nutrient enrichment changed aspects of their biological structure and metabolism and that changes were especially favoured by periods when light was not limiting.  相似文献
