Populations of Eichhornia azurea (Swartz) Kunth (Pontederiaceae) are often composed of three floral morphs that differ in style length and anther position. Hence, E. azurea is described as tristylous. For sexual reproduction the plant requires specialized pollinators able to transfer pollen from flowers with long-, mid-, or short-level anthers to flowers with long-, mid-, or short-styles, respectively. This is because within a floral morph, self-incompatibility is the rule. Populations of E. azurea were studied from six localities in south-eastern Brazil (São Paulo and Minas Gerais). The frequencies of floral morphs, floral morphology and flower-visiting bees were recorded in each population. Ten different bee species were observed visiting plants. Four of them were considered generalist bees and not appropriate for legitimate pollination of the three floral morphs. Another three species were considered opportunists and only three species were considered to be potential pollinators. At the coastal region (Juréia), the plant population lacked the short-styled morph and the mid-styled morph and exhibited a semi-homostylous condition, in which the low-level anthers were adjacent to the stigma. This morph showed high level of self-compatibility. The disappearance of the short-styled morph from this region is likely correlated with the absence of Ancyloscelis gigas Friese, a specialized long-tongued bee that is oligolectic on this plant in other localities. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 77 , 499–507. 相似文献

Algal zonation patterns were studied in two sites (Caloura, south coast and Ribeirinha, north coast) of the island of Sao Miguel, Azores. At each site two stations were studied and the transects revealed the occurrence of two distinct and well established algal zones. In the first zone, daily immersed and emersed by the tide, the algae were growing in a dense and short tangle forming a mat, referred to as algal turf. In the second zone, which was wet most of the time, the algae were larger and frondose. A list of the species of benthic marine algae occurring on the algal turf of each station is given. Of the total of 47 species found, eight are new for the Azores and another 13 species are recorded for the first time for Sao Miguel. Gigartina acicularis (Roth) Lamouroux and articulate coralline algae (Corallina oficinalis Linnaeus and Jania spp.) were the more common species. Seasonal variation of the algal turf was studied and related to mean monthly values of air and sea water temperatures, insolation and hours of light. The zonation patterns and composition of algal species were compared with those from other open rocky shores. 相似文献

Productivity, habitat heterogeneity and environmental similarity are of the most widely accepted hypotheses to explain spatial patterns of species richness and species composition similarity. Environmental factors may exhibit seasonal changes affecting species distributions. We explored possible changes in spatial patterns of bird species richness and species composition similarity. Feeding habits are likely to have a major influence in bird–environment associations and, given that food availability shows seasonal changes in temperate climates, we expect those associations to differ by trophic group (insectivores or granivores). We surveyed birds and estimated environmental variables along line‐transects covering an E‐W gradient of annual precipitation in the Pampas of Argentina during the autumn and the spring. We examined responses of bird species richness to spatial changes in habitat productivity and heterogeneity using regression analyses, and explored potential differences between seasons of those responses. Furthermore, we used Mantel tests to examine the relationship between species composition similarity and both the environmental similarity between sites and the geographic distance between sites, also assessing differences between seasons in those relationships. Richness of insectivorous birds was directly related to primary productivity in both seasons, whereas richness of seed‐eaters showed a positive association with habitat heterogeneity during the spring. Species composition similarity between assemblages was correlated with both productivity similarity and geographic proximity during the autumn and the spring, except for insectivore assemblages. Diversity within main trophic groups seemed to reflect differences in their spatial patterns as a response to changes between seasons in the spatial patterns of food resources. Our findings suggest that considering different seasons and functional groups in the analyses of diversity spatial pattern could contribute to better understand the determinants of biological diversity in temperate climates. 相似文献

Abstract The tubular protein inclusion of the chloroplasts of some CAM plants was found to maintain its normal pattern of accumulating by day and dissolving at night when the hydration state of the chloroplasts was reversed by promoting influx of water during the day and efflux of water during the night. Morphometric study of the chloroplast inclusion of Sedum telephium supports our suggestion that the behaviour of the aggregate of tubules is independent of the water content of the chloroplasts. 相似文献

Life history and production of Agapetus quadratus (Trichoptera: Glossosomatidae) in a temporary, spring-fed stream 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. The life history and trophic basis of production of the caddisfly grazer Agapetus quadratus were studied in the torrent Gorg Blau, a spring‐fed stream on the island of Majorca that dries annually during summer. 2. Quantitative random samples were taken every 2–3 weeks during an annual surficial flow period, from November 2000 to mid‐July 2001. Instars of field‐collected larvae were determined by measurements of head width and pronotum length, and the sex of all pupae was determined to study sexual dimorphism and sex ratio. 3. Stage‐frequency histograms suggested a trivoltine population, with an average cohort time of 4 months. Larval development was asynchronous, with continuous growth and overlapping generations. Recruitment peaks were identified in mid‐November, early March and late June, indicative of winter, spring and summer generations. On average, females were larger than males and the mean sex ratio was 2 : 3 (females : males). Population densities and biomasses derived from the field data were used to calculate production and turnover rate. 4. Annual production of A. quadratus in the torrent Gorg Blau (4.80 g dry mass m?2 year?1) was the highest ever reported for the genus, being comparable with that estimated for some insects with rapid development and multiple cohorts. 5. Estimates of production of A. quadratus were combined with foregut content analysis to estimate the fraction of total production derived from the principal food sources: algae and organic detritus. Algae supported a major proportion of the production of this grazer. 6. The low density of predators characteristic of many temporary streams, and the small amplitudes in discharge and temperature during most of the wet period that characterise the spring habitats might allow high levels of grazer production in this particular Mediterranean stream. 相似文献
