The impact of sublethal heat on photosynthetic performance, photosynthetic pigments and free radical scavenging activity was examined in three high mountain species, Rhododendron ferrugineum, Senecio incanus and Ranunculus glacialis using controlled in situ applications of heat stress, both in darkness and under natural solar irradiation. Heat treatments applied in the dark reversibly reduced photosynthetic performance and the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), which remained impeded for several days when plants were exposed to natural light conditions subsequently to the heat treatment. In contrast, plants exposed to heat stress under natural irradiation were able to tolerate and recover from heat stress more readily. The critical temperature threshold for chlorophyll fluorescence was higher under illumination (Tc) than in the dark (Tc). Heat stress caused a significant de‐epoxidation of the xanthophyll cycle pigments both in the light and in the dark conditions. Total free radical scavenging activity was highest when heat stress was applied in the dark. This study demonstrates that, in the European Alps, heat waves can temporarily have a negative impact on photosynthesis and, importantly, that results obtained from experiments performed in darkness and/or on detached plant material may not reliably predict the impact of heat stress under field conditions.  相似文献

Special ultrastructural characteristics of the haptorid soil ciliate Enchelydium polynucleatum Foissner, 1984 are the restriction of the parasomal sacs to the area of the “brush” and finger-like projections of the food vacuole membrane into the lumen of the vacuole. The general organization of the infraciliature is similar to that of Spathidium and some buetschliids because the anterior ends of the somatic kineties are condensed and obliquely bent. Enchelydium is similar to haptorids and buetschliids in possessing monokinetid somatic fibrillar structures with the classical fibrillar associates: 1) a short kinetodesmal fiber; 2) two transverse microtubular ribbons; 3) a long postciliary microtubular ribbon; and 4) a system of overlapping subkinetal microtubules, which seems to be absent in the buetschliids. Unlike Spathidium and all other haptorids so far investigated ultrastructurally, serial sections show that there are no oral dikinetids, as in the endocommensal buetschliids and balantidiids. Instead, three to six anterior kinetids in each ciliary row have nematodesmal bundles extending into the cytoplasm and surrounding the cytopharynx. These kinetids lack cilia and all fibrillar associates except enlarged transverse ribbons, which extend anteriorly and inwards to support the cytopharynx. Other similarities between the buetschliids and Enchelydium are the conspicuous rough endoplasmic reticulum and abundant sausage-like vesicles in the oral region. As in other haptorids, Enchelydium has two types of toxicysts and one type of mucocyst. These observations strongly suggest that Enchelydium belongs to the ancestral stock of both the Haptorida and the Archistomatida. The similarities in the somatic and oral infraciliature and ultrastructure of the Haptorida and the Archistomatida suggest that they belong to the same subclass, Haptoria Corliss, 1974.  相似文献

Wild intergeneric hybrids are recorded among six genera in the New Zealand Gnaphalieae, but little evidence substantiating their identity has been published. In this paper we evaluate the identity of putative hybrids between two species of Gnaphalieae endemic to New Zealand, Anaphalioides bellidioides and Ewartia sinclairii . The two species are occasionally sympatric in the north-east of the South Island and wild putative hybrids are rarely encountered. To test the hybridity hypothesis, specimens from nine putative hybrids were collected from one site and analysed for 76 morphological characters. The putative hybrids possessed predominantly intermediate or parental character states in comparison with A. bellidioides and E. sinclairii . Extreme traits were less common and a single novel character state was recorded in two hybrids only. Non-metric multidimensional scaling of dissimilarities derived from both continuous and discrete characters was strongly supportive of the hybridity hypothesis. Canonical discriminant analysis of the continuous characters was supportive for some putative hybrids only, in part reflecting the possession of extreme states in characters with high loadings. One of the putative hybrids was strongly indicated to be a backcross with A. bellidioides . Leaf anatomy is compared for 47 taxa of the tribe Inuleae (Compositae) from New Zealand and Tasmania. The taxa are tabulated according to their lamina structure. Noteworthy anatomical features are lamina type and grade of differentiation, stomatal position, epidermis and cuticle thickness, shape of palisade cells, number of bundle-sheath layers; presence or absence of sclerenchyma caps, water storage cells, secretory canals, abaxial collenchyma and protruding midrib. It is shown that leaf anatomy data provide characters which are taxonomically useful in classification of Inuleae.  相似文献

Ca2+ was localized in chemically injured internodal cells of the characean alga Nitella flexilis (L.) Ag. using alizarin red and antimonate precipitation. The presence of Ca2+ in the antimonate precipitates was verified by X-ray analysis and EGTA chelation. Callose-containing amorphous wound walls were induced by 0·1 m m chlortetracycline (CTC) and cellulosic fibrillar wound walls were induced by 50 m m CaCl2. Numerous precipitates were found in the amorphous wound walls and in the adjacent cytoplasm. Precipitates were mainly localized in single membrane-bound cisternae, probably of the endoplasmic reticulum, which accumulate at the wound and become a component of the amorphous wound wall via membrane fusion. In fibrillar wound walls, which do not contain membranous residues, precipitate density was significantly lower and similar to that in the secondary cell wall.
The data suggest that the high Ca2+ content of amorphous wound walls is due to incorporation of cytoplasmic Ca2+ stores. The possible function of amorphous wound walls in maintaining cellular Ca2+ homeostasis is discussed.  相似文献

Globally, over 7.4 million accessions of crop seeds are stored in gene banks, and conservation of genotypic variation is pivotal for breeding. We combined genetic and biochemical approaches to obtain a broad overview of factors that influence seed storability and ageing in barley (Hordeum vulgare). Seeds from a germplasm collection of 175 genotypes from four continents grown in field plots with different nutrient supply were subjected to two artificial ageing regimes. Genome‐wide association mapping revealed 107 marker trait associations, and hence, genotypic effects on seed ageing. Abiotic and biotic stresses were found to affect seed longevity. To address aspects of abiotic, including oxidative, stress, two major antioxidant groups were analysed. No correlation was found between seed deterioration and the lipid‐soluble tocochromanols, nor with oil, starch and protein contents. Conversely, the water‐soluble glutathione and related thiols were converted to disulphides, indicating a strong shift towards more oxidizing intracellular conditions, in seeds subjected to long‐term dry storage at two temperatures or to two artificial ageing treatments. The data suggest that intracellular pH and (bio)chemical processes leading to seed deterioration were influenced by the type of ageing or storage. Moreover, seed response to ageing or storage treatment appears to be significantly influenced by both maternal environment and genetic background.  相似文献

Agauopsis pteropes sp.n., from the Mediterranean, and A. okinavensis sp.n., from the West Pacific, are described. Nine natural groups of closely related species are distinguished on the basis of the spines on leg I and the chaetotaxy of the tarsi and the palps. Most of the species known are placed within one of these groups. The geographical distribution of the natural groups is outlined.  相似文献
