Summary Mortality estimates for the immature stages of two butterfly species, Danaus plexippus and D. chrysippus, were obtained by observing the survival of egg cohorts on different sized patches of food plants (Asclepias spp.), over a one-year period. Losses were variable (0–100%) but usually high (90% and over) throughout the year for both species. Most of the losses in both species occurred in the early stages. The mortality by the third instar accounts for 86–100% of the total losses by instar V. Accordingly both species fall into Price's (1975) type A survivorship category. The size of patches of host plants affected losses. The trend was for increasing losses with increasing patch size. A full life-budget is presented for D. plexippus and implications of the observed mortality levels for competition between the two butterfly species is discussed. 相似文献

Elevational patterns of tree diversity are well studied worldwide. However, few studies have examined how seedlings respond to elevational gradients and whether their responses vary across climatic zones. In this study, we established three elevational transects in tropical, subtropical and subalpine mountain forests in Yunnan Province, southern China, to examine the responses of tree species and their seedlings to elevational gradients. Within each transect, we calculated species diversity indices and composition of both adult trees and seedlings at different elevations. For both adult trees and seedlings, we found that species diversity decreased with increasing elevation in both tropical and subalpine transects. Species composition showed significant elevational separation within all three transects. Many species had specific elevational preferences, but abundant tree species that occurred at specific elevations tended to have very limited recruitment in the understory. Our results highlight that the major factors that determine elevational distributions of tree species vary across climatic zones. Specifically, we found that the contribution of air temperature to tree species composition increased from tropical to subalpine transects, whereas the contribution of soil moisture decreased across these transects. 相似文献

Collections of Nucella lapillus (L.) from various eastern Atlantic areas have been measured, and shell shape has been analysed by D'Arcy Thompson's method in terms of whorl ratio, apical angle, and spiral angle. In southwestern Ireland N. lapillus varies greatly from tall and narrow in sheltered situations to short and wide at very wave-exposed sites. A local population is described for a bay near Crookhaven, County Cork. In northwestern Spain the open-sea form is developed only weakly. In southwestern Ireland N. lapillus effectively populates mussel beds in the lower littoral on open coasts, whereas in Spain it is sparse or absent from such situations but plentiful high up on the shore on barnacles in places where there is some local shelter from rocks or crevices. It is suggested that failure to develop the open-sea type in Spain is responsible for this difference in niche. Both in Spain and at a site in Scotland N. lapillus feeding on mussels in sheltered situations is of the tall narrow type, so that a diet of mussels cannot alone be responsible for the development of the open sea type, although it still might be a necessary condition. It is to be expected that the genetic composition of populations will vary regionally and will contribute to variation in shell form, but the part which it plays on a purely local scale remains uncertain. 相似文献

The present study investigated the impacts of rainforest clearance, and associated subsequent land␣use for pasture, on assemblages
of soil and litter arthropods in eastern subtropical Australia. We assessed the utility of soil and litter arthropods as potential
bio-indicators of cleared and forested habitats. Arthropods were sampled from 24 sites (12 sites each in rainforest and pasture)
using two methods (extraction from litter, pitfall traps). Responses of taxa were analysed at various levels of taxonomic
resolution, including ‘coarse’ arthropods (all arthropods sorted to Order/Class), ant genera and ant species. Multivariate
analyses of arthropod composition indicated that an increase in the level of taxonomic resolution did not provide a commensurate
increase in the sensitivity of assemblage response. Indicator values (IndVals), computed for each taxon, showed that a number
of arthropod taxa may have potential as bio-indicators of habitat change. However the use of many of these, especially many
ant species found in our study, may be unreliable because even after extensive numbers of sites were sampled, most species
showed patchy distributions. To overcome this problem, we generated ‘composite indices’, by combining information from sets

Assessing biodiversity 'sampling packages': how similar are arthropod assemblages in different tropical rainforests? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Arthropod sampling protocols have been applied to four areas of undisturbed rainforest in Australia and Borneo at sites located between 28° S and 4° N. Seven different trapping methods have been used in each case following a strictly comparable protocol applied during single wet-season surveys at each location. A number of large scale patterns across sites correlated with latitude, altitude and/or biogeographical history are evident at the ordinal level. The results are used to evaluate two key ideas in biodiversity survey. The first tests questions of the constancy of particular trap types in terms of the target animals. The second attempts to design an efficient multiple method sampling 'package' for rapid biodiversity assessment. Across all sites similar traps behaved in a similar manner in terms of the profile of arthropods that they caught although Malaise traps and pitfalls are particularly 'constant' in this regard. Subsets of both trapping methods and target taxa are identified which will maximise the opportunities for detecting between site differences. 相似文献
