The peptide nature of the posture asymmetry factor (PAF) produced in the brain after unilateral removal of the motor region of the neocortex was established. The inactivation of PAF activity in the brain toward the end of the third week after the removal is due to PAF inactivation by the endogenous factor absent from the intact brain. The molecular weight of the inactivation factor exceeds 5.0 kD that makes it possible to separate it from the PAF by gel filtration on Sephadex G-25. The correlation was marked between the increasing activity of the PAF inactivation factor and the recovery of the initial symmetric functioning of the spinal centers during three weeks after unilateral damage to the CNS.  相似文献

By using newly hatched (approximately 2 weeks old) brown trout(Salmo trutta) from six families of wild and six families ofsea-ranched origin (seventh generation), we tested the hypothesesthat (1) the hatchery environment selects for increased boldness,and (2) boldness predicts dominance status. Sea-ranched troutspend their first 2 years in the hatchery before being releasedinto the wild at the onset of seaward migration. Trout werepresented with a novel object (tack) and with food (brine shrimp),and their responses were measured and scored in terms of boldness.Siblings with increasing difference in boldness were then pairedin dyadic contests. Fish of sea-ranged origin were on averagebolder than were fish of wild origin, and bolder individualswere more likely to become dominant regardless of origin. Boldnesswas not related to RNA levels, indicating that bold behaviorwas not a consequence of higher metabolism or growth rate. Neitherwas size a predictor of bold behavior or the outcome of dyadiccontests. These results are consistent with studies on olderlife stages showing increased boldness toward predators in hatchery-selectedfish, which suggests that behavioral consequences of hatcheryselection are manifested very early in life. The concordancebetween boldness and dominance may suggest that these behaviorsare linked in a risk prone-aggressive phenotype, which may bepromoted by hatchery selection. However, we also found significantvariation in behavioral and growth-related traits among families,suggesting that heritable variation has not been exhausted bysea-ranching procedures.  相似文献

Pycnogenol® (PYC), a patented combination of bioflavonoids extracted from the bark of French maritime pine (Pinus maritima), scavenges free radicals and promotes cellular health. The protective capacity of PYC against ethanol toxicity of neurons has not previously been explored. The present study demonstrates that in postnatal day 9 (P9) rat cerebellar granule cells the antioxidants vitamin E (VE) and PYC (1) dose dependently block cell death following 400, 800, and 1600 mg/dL ethanol exposure (2) inhibit the ethanol‐induced activation of caspase‐3 in the same model system; and (3) reduce neuronal membrane disruption as assayed by phosphatidylserine translocation to the cell surface. These results suggest that both PYC and VE have the potential to act as therapeutic agents, antagonizing the induction of neuronal cell death by ethanol exposure. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Data have been obtained on development of evoked potentials in the sensorimotor cortex to electrical stimulation of the thalamic ventroposterolateral nucleus (VPL) in rabbits in early ontogeny. In 3-5 days rabbits, under four times increase of threshold electric stimulation of VPL the thalamocortical response (TCR) is presented by a positive-negative potential with a long latency and minimum amplitude parameters. Second and third TCR positive components to increasing of threshold value of electric stimulation 4 times, are differentiated from 7-8 days age. Age dynamics of TCR amplitude-temporal parameters is characterized by a shortening of latency and an increase of oscillations amplitude, most expressed at 2-3 weeks of postnatal life. TCR of one month rabbit to increased threshold electrical stimulation of VPL is presented by short-latency positive-negative oscillation with a positive phase consisting of three components with successively increasing amplitudes.  相似文献

Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 7136 exhibited major changes in lipid composition when grown in the presence of either 0.15% sodium deoxycholate or 0.15% sodium benzoate. These lipophilic compounds had directly opposing effects on the lipid profile of the organism. The saturated/unsaturated ratio was markedly elevated in benzoate-grown cells. On the other hand, it was depressed by an even greater margin from the control after growth in the presence of deoxycholate. Adjustments in the phospholipid content of the cells were also recorded. Phosphatidylethanolamines decreased by 28 and 50% in the deoxycholate- and benzoate-grown cells, respectively. Compensatory increases in phosphatidylglycerols of 87.5 and 175% occurred, along with increases in cardiolipins of 12- and 22-fold, respectively. Deoxycholate or benzoate supplementation also altered the relative distribution of neutral lipids; again, benzoate stimulated the greater change. Compositional changes were accompanied in the organism by increased heat sensitivity, but the effect on the susceptibility of S. typhimurium to injury varied with the physical properties of the supplement used.  相似文献

The 72- and 92-kDa type IV collagenases are members of a group of secreted zinc metalloproteases. Two members of this family, collagenase and stromelysin, have previously been localized to the long arm of chromosome 11. Here we assign both of the two type IV collagenase genes to human chromosome 16. By sequencing, the 72-kDa gene is shown to consist of 13 exons, 3 more than have been reported for the other members of this gene family. The extra exons encode the amino acids of the fibronectin-like domain which has so far been found in only the 72- and 92-kDa type IV collagenase. The evolutionary relationship among the members of this gene family is discussed.  相似文献

The variability of the cardiac rhythm was studied in males with different initial respiratory rates. At rest and during voluntarily controlled breathing, subjects with medium respiratory rates were found to have a less variable heart rate than their counterparts with low or high respiratory rates.  相似文献
