Abstract.  1. The fleas Xenopsylla conformis and Xenopsylla ramesis exploit the same rodent host, Meriones crassus , and replace each other between two different habitats situated at the opposite sides of a steep precipitation gradient. It was hypothesised that the reason for this paratopic distribution is competition between larvae of the two species for food resources.
2. This hypothesis was tested by studying the performance of larvae of the two species in terms of their developmental success in mixed-species and single-species treatments under different air temperatures, relative humidities, substrate textures, and food abundance.
3. The number of individuals of X. conformis that survived until emergence depended significantly on the presence of competing species, being, in general, lower in mixed-species compared with single-species treatments. The decrease in developmental success of X. conformis in mixed-species treatments was found mainly during food shortage. In contrast, presence of the competitor did not affect the number of X. ramesis that survived until emergence. No effect of the presence of the competitor on duration of development or sex ratio was found in either species.
4. The results of this study, together with the results of our previous studies, provide an explanation for the paratopic distribution of X. conformis and X. ramesis that exploit the same host species.  相似文献

A search for fucoidan-degrading enzymes and other O-glycosylhydrolases has been performed among 51 strains of marine bacteria of the family Flavobacteriaceae isolated from red, green, and brown algae, as well as from the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius and the holothurian Apostichopus japonicus. Over 40% of the studied strains synthesized fucoidanases. The marine bacteria Mesonia algae KMM 3909T (an isolate from green alga Acrosiphonia sonderi), as well as Maribacter sp. KMM 6211 and Gramella sp. KMM 6054 (associants of the sea urchin S. intermedius), were the best producers of fucoidanases. Xylose effectively induced the biosynthesis of fucoidanases in these strains. None of the 15 strains of marine bacteria belonging to the genus Arenibacter produced polysaccharide hydrolases.  相似文献

Two pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] genotypes, a salt tolerant Manak and a salt sensitive ICPL 88039 were subjected to stress treatment of 3 mM boron, 60 mM NaCl and boron + NaCl at the seedling stage. Radicle and plumule proteins were analyzed by SDS-PAGE. Boron treatment increased 28.3 kDa proteins in plumule and 38.3 and 51.9 kDa proteins in radicle of Manak, however, there was no specific protein in ICPL 88039 either in plumule or in radicle. In NaCl treatment 95.6 kDa proteins appeared in plumule and 67.5 kDa proteins in radicle of Manak. Conversely content of some proteins decreased by boron treatment alone or in combination with NaCl although they were present in the controls. Thus, 54.3 kDa protein disappeared in ICPL 88039 plumule, 68.4 kDa in Manak radicle and 28.1 kDa in ICPL 88039 radicle.  相似文献

In this study, we describe a one-step chemoenzymatic reaction for the production of natural blue pigments, in which the geniposide from Gardenia extracts is transformed by glycosidases to genipin. Genipin is then allowed to react with amino acids, thereby generating a natural blue pigment. The β-glycosidases, most notably isolase (a variant of β-glucanase), recombinant β-glucosidase, Cellulase T, and amylases, were shown to hydrolyze geniposide to produce the desired pigments, whereas the α-glycosidases did not. Among the 20 tested amino acids, glycine and tyrosine were associated with the highest dye production yields. The optimal molar ratio of geniposide to glycine, two reactants relevant to pigment production, was unity. The natural blue pigments produced in this study were used to dye cotton, silk, and wool. The color yields of the pigments were determined to be significantly higher than those of other natural dyes. Furthermore, the color fastness properties of these dyes were fairly good, even in the absence of mordant.  相似文献

Phylogeny of anoxygenic filamentous phototrophic bacteria (AFPB) of the family Oscillochloridaceae (Oscillochloris trichoides DG6T and the recently isolated strains Oscillochloris sp. R and C6) was studied based on comparative analyses of the genes coding for 16S rRNA (rrs), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (cbbL), and nitrogenase (nifH). The sequences of the genes studied proved to be identical in the three strains, which is in agreement with data obtained earlier that showed a lack of differentiating phenotypic distinctions between these strains; therefore, it is proposed that the new strains should be identified as representatives of the species O. trichoides. Using an earlier designed system of oligonucleotide primers and a specially designed additional primer, fragments of the cbbL genes of the “red-like” form I RuBisCO were amplified and sequenced for all of the O. trichoides strains. Analysis of the cbbL genes suggested a separate position of the bacteria studied in the phylogenetic tree, where O. trichoides strains formed an independent branch, which, apart from this species, also included the only studied species of gram-positive facultatively chemoautotrophic bacteria, Sulfobacillus acidophilus. In the phylogenetic tree inferred from the analysis of nifH genes, the bacteria under study also formed a new separate branch, deviating near the root, which indicated a lack of relatedness between them and other phototrophic bacteria. The data obtained support the conclusion that AFPB has an ancient origin and their allocation as one of the main evolutionary lineages of eubacteria, which was made based on the analysis of ribosomal genes.  相似文献

Vanilloid receptors 1 (VRs1) expressed in a subpopulation of sensory neurons and responsible for processing of chemical and thermal noxious stimuli were also shown to be expressed in several cerebral structures and to be involved in the regulation of glutamatergic synaptic transmission. In this study, we started to investigate the possibility that VRs1 are also involved in the regulation of GABA-ergic synaptic transmission. For this purpose, the effect of a VR1 agonist, capsaicin, on spontaneous GABA-ergic inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs) was studied in hippocampal cell cultures using a patch-clamp technique. It was found that capsaicin (10 μM) decreased both the frequency and amplitude of spontaneous IPSCs. This finding suggests the involvement of VRs1 in the regulation of neuronal firing in some GABA-ergic interneurons and in the modulation of the efficacy of GABA-ergic synaptic transmission. However, considering the direction of the effect (a decrease in the IPSC frequency) and lack of its desensitization, the involvement of other receptor(s) also cannot currently be ruled out. With the method of dynamic light scattering it was shown that the average size of micelles in the series of formulations based on various clindamycin salts, i. e. ClindHCl+Tween-20, ClindBz+Tween-20, ClindHCl+Cremafor-EL and ClindBz+Cremafor-EL increased from 6 to 20 nm. Investigations with the agar diffusion method revealed that the bactericidic action of the micelle-capsulated therapeutics did not depend on the micelle size within 6 to 20 mn. The concentration of the micellar clindamycin or gentamicin equal to 0.05 mcg/ml was bacteriostatic with respect to Micrococcus (Sarsina) luteus.  相似文献

Polymerase chain reaction was used to study the association of polymorphic markers I/D of the angiotensin-converting enzyme gene (ACE) and A1166C of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor gene (AT2R1) with chronic heart failure (CHF) in Russian and Tatar patients that had had myocardial infarction. In Russian patients aged 50 years or younger that had had macrofocal myocardial infarction, the CC genotype of the A1166C polymorphic marker of gene AT2R1 was associated with an increased risk of CHF (OR = 11.36). Genotype DD and allele D of the I/D polymorphic marker of gene ACE were associated with a more severe CHF (functional class III–IV) in Russian patients (OR = 3.50 and 2.06). In Tatar patients, polymorphic markers I/D of gene ACE and A1166C of gene AT2R1 were not associated with CHF.  相似文献

An Escherichia coli strain producing transposase of a repeated sequence of Bordetella pertussis chromosome (RSBP) was constructed. A defective MGE-helper plasmid method, which allowed the determination of transposase functional activity was developed. It was shown that transposase synthesized in E. coli cells ensures transposition of “defective” RSBP into the host chromosome. Overexpression of transposase was shown to markedly decrease the vital activity of E. coli cells under selective cultivation conditions. Reasons for a decrease in viability transposase-producing cells are discussed. Results showing the impact of transposase on replication of recombinant plasmids and E. coli cell division were obtained.  相似文献
