The bioassay-guided purification of ether extracts of Alpinia officinarum led to the isolation of two new compounds 6-hydroxy-1,7-diphenyl-4-en-3-heptanone (1) and 6-(2-hydroxy-phenyl)-4-methoxy-2-pyrone (4) as well as three known compounds 1,7-diphenyl-4-en-3-heptanone (2), 1,7-diphenyl-5-methoxy-3-heptanone (3), and apigenin (5). Their structures were established on the basis of spectral methods. All three diarylheptanoids 1, 2, and 3 exhibited potent PAF receptor binding inhibitory activities with an IC50 of 1.3, 5.0, and 1.6 μM, respectively. The angiogenic sprout has been compared to the growing axon, and indeed, many proteins direct pathfinding by both structures. The Roundabout (Robo) proteins are guidance receptors with well-established functions in the nervous system; however, their role in the mammalian vasculature remains ill defined. Here we show that an endothelial-specific Robo, Robo4, maintains vascular integrity. Activation of Robo4 by Slit2 inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-165-induced migration, tube formation and permeability in vitro and VEGF-165-stimulated vascular leak in vivo by blocking Src family kinase activation. In mouse models of retinal and choroidal vascular disease, Slit2 inhibited angiogenesis and vascular leak, whereas deletion of Robo4 enhanced these pathologic processes. Our results define a previously unknown function for Robo receptors in stabilizing the vasculature and suggest that activating Robo4 may have broad therapeutic application in diseases characterized by excessive angiogenesis and/or vascular leak. 相似文献

Gene flow from genetically modified (GM) crops to non-GM cultivars or weedy relatives may lead to the development of more
aggressive weeds. We quantified the amount of gene flow from herbicide-tolerant GM rice (Protox GM, derived from the cultivar Dongjin) to three cultivars (Dongjin, Aranghyangchal and Hwaseong) and a weedy rice line. Gene
flow frequency generally decreased with increasing distance from the pollen donor. At the shortest distance (0.5 m), we observed
a maximum frequency (0.039%) of gene flow. We found that the cultivar Dongjin received the greatest amount of gene flow, with
the second being weedy rice. Heterosis of F2 inbred progeny was also examined between Protox GM and weedy rice. We compared growth and reproduction between F2 progeny (homozygous or hemizygous for the Protox gene) and parental rice lines (GM and weedy rice). Here, transgene-homozygous F2 progeny was significantly taller and produced
more seeds than the transgene-hemizygous F2 progeny and parental lines. Although the gene flow frequency was generally low,

Seaweed resources can be used as raw materials to produce bioethanol, a renewable biofuel, to overcome fossil fuel depletion and environmental problems. Red seaweeds possess high amount of bioethanol-producible carbohydrates. Among 55 species tested, the carrageenophyte Kappaphycus alvarezii (also known as cottonii) was selected as the best resource for bioethanol production. This species is one of the most abundant and easily cultured red seaweeds. The main components of carrageenan are d-galactose-4-sulfate and 3,6-anhydro-d-galactose-2-sulfate, which are potentially fermentable d-typed carbohydrates. The seaweed powder was hydrolyzed with 0.2?M sulfuric acid and fermented with brewer’s yeast. The ethanol yield from the K. alvarezii hydrolysate was 0.21?g?g?1-galactose, which corresponded to a 41% theoretical yield.
