—Preparations of crude synaptosome fractions (P2) from the telencephalon and from the diencephalon plus optic lobes of the pigeon and from the telencephalon of the rat were used to study the effects of l -tryptophan on (a) the levels of serotonin (5-HT), norepinephrinc (NE) and dopamine in nerve endings and (b) the release of radioactive 5-HT, NE and dopamine from nerve endings. The level of 5-HT was significantly higher (P < 0–05) in the P2 fraction isolated from the telencephalon of pigeons given intramuscular injections of 300mg/kg of l -tryptophan in comparison to control values (1.11 ± 0.09 vs 0.74 ± 0.13 nmol/g original tissue wt). A smaller but not statistically significant increase in 5-HT was noted in the P2 fractions isolated from the diencephalon plus optic lobes of pigeons given injections of l -tryptophan. In vitro studies using preparations of synaptosomes (from both pigeon and rat) labelled with [3H]5–HT demonstrated that 1.0 mm -l -tryptophan caused a 30% increase (P < 0.05) in the release of [3H]5-HT over control values. This effect by l -tryptophan was blocked when a decarboxylase inhibitor was added to the medium. Tryptophan had no effect on the levels of NE or dopamine in these nerve endings nor did it have any effect on the release of these two amines from these preparations of synaptosomes. The results are discussed in terms of the role of serotonin in producing depression in pigeons working on a certain learned behavioural task.  相似文献

Summary A study of the fine structure of the sense organs on the prostomial cirri and palps of Nereis diversicolor shows them to consist of two types of cell. There are between 7 and 15 sensory cells and a similar number of associated cells which contain many osmiophilic granules. The cell bodies of both are sub-epidermal, having a long distal process which reaches the surface in a raised sensory hillock. The sensory cells carry a cilium, which passes through the cuticle and emerges surrounded by a sheath formed from the outer layers of the epicuticle. Scanning electron micrographs show the surface of the cirrus to be covered by hair-like epicuticular microvilli, through which the sheathed cilia protrude. There is also a second type of sensory cell which occurs singly between the epithelial cells. The distal membrane of this cell is formed into a tuft of approximately 55 large microvilli which open through a pore in the epicuticle. It is suggested by their position and structure, that both these receptors resemble chemoreceptors.We should like to acknowledge the advice and technical help of Dr. J. A. Two collections of submerged wood were made from the Mushroom Research Centre in northern Thailand. One collection comprising 100 samples was made from an artificial lake, which had been made by damming a stream running through a secondary forest. The other collection comprising 90 samples was made from an adjacent non dammed shallow stream running through a similar forest. A total of 68 fungal taxa were recorded during the study and the Shannon–Weiner index (H′) was applied to evaluate the diversities of freshwater fungi. Sørensen’s index (S′) was calculated to evaluate the similarity of different fungal communities. The variation of freshwater fungi on submerged wood between lentic and lotic habitat is discussed and compared with previous studies. A dramatic decrease in species richness and diversity, with significantly changed species composition were observed in the artificial lake as compared to the non dammed stream.  相似文献
