Karyosystematics ofVeronica sect.Beccabunga (Scrophulariaceae) with special reference to the taxa in Turkey

The chromosome numbers ofVeronica beccabunga subsp.abscondita (2n=18),V. anagallis-aquatica subsp.lysimachioides (2n=18),V. anagallis-aquatica subsp.michauxii (2n=36), and of a presumable hybridV. poljensis × V. anagalloides (2n=36) are new for the relevant taxa. — A new number was found forV. anagalloides subsp.heureka (2n=18). The other counts, ofV. scardica (2n=18),V. anagalloides subsp.anagalloides (2n=18), andV. anagallis-aquatica subsp.oxycarpa (2n=36) agree with earlier findings.—Data from the literature have been critically evaluated, in some cases the relevant vouchers have been checked and, where needed, the original determinations have been revised. For several taxa, comments concerning their systematics and remarks on their distribution in Turkey are given.     

Radiation shielding parameters of some antioxidants using Monte Carlo method

In this paper, radiation shielding parameters such as mass attenuation coefficients and half value layer (HVL) of some antioxidants are investigated using MCNPX (version 2.4.0). The validation of the generated MCNPX simulation geometry for antioxidant structures is provided by comparing the results with standard WinXcom data for radiation mass attenuation coefficients of antioxidants. Very good agreement between W?NXCOM and MCNPX was obtained. The results from the validated geometry were used to calculate the shielding parameters of different antioxidants. The radiation attenuation properties of each antioxidant were compared with each other. The results showed that, on average, the highest and the lowest radiation mass attenuation coefficients were observed on hesperidin and delphinidin chloride, respectively. It can be concluded that Monte Carlo simulation is a strong tool and an alternate method where experimental investigations are not possible and a standard simulation setup can be used in further studies for different biological structures. It can also be concluded that the obtained results from this study are very useful for radiology and radiotherapy applications where antioxidants are frequently used.     

Opioid receptor labeling with the chloromethyl ketone derivative of [3H]Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-(Me)Phe-Gly-ol (DAMGO) II: Covalent labeling of mu opioid binding site by 3H-Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-(Me)Phe chloromethyl ketone.

Opioid receptors of rat brain membranes were prelabeled with 3H-Tyr-D-Ala2-(Phe4)-Gly-CH2Cl, a chloromethyl ketone derivative of enkephalin, and solubilized in 1% digitonin. Hydrodynamic parameters of the receptor detergent complex derived from gel filtration and sucrose density gradient ultracentrifugation were found to be 51 A and 8.7 S, respectively, and the size was estimated to be about 200 kDa. Sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis followed by fluorography revealed specific alkylation of a major protein at 58 kDa.
