Selective esterification of 1,6-anhydrohexopyranoses: The possible role of intramolecular hydrogen-bonding

Selective esterification reactions of 1,6-anhydro-3-deoxy-β-D-xylo-hexopyranose(1), 1,6-anhydro-β-D-glucopyranose (7), and several derivatives of 7, were conducted with an acid chloride or acid anhydride in pyridine. Reaction of 1 with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride and with benzoyl chloride gave 70 and 63%, respectively, of the 2-esters. The 2-methyl and 2-benzyl ethers of 7, both having strongly hydrogen-bonded C-4 hydroxyl group, reacted with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride to yield the 4-monosulfonates (71 and 74%, respectively). Esterification of the 2-methyl ether and 2-p-toluenesulfonate of 7 with p-toluenesulfonic anhydride instead of with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride led to increased yields of the 4-p-toluenesulfonates after a shorter reaction-time.     

ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF A VERY FAST LOBSTER MUSCLE

The remotor muscle of the second antenna of the American lobster is functionally divided into two parts. One part produces slow, powerful contractions and is used for postural control. The other part produces very brief twitches, can follow frequencies over 100/sec without fusion and is probably used for sound production. This great speed is due, in part, to synchronous arrival of nerve impulses at multiple terminals, a very brief membrane electrical response and electrical continuity throughout large volumes of sarcoplasm. Calculations indicate that the very extensive sarcoplasmic reticulum is probably responsible for the rapid decline of tension in this muscle.     

Red Cell Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency—A Newly Recognized Cause of Neonatal Jaundice and Kernicterus in Canada

Seven male newborns of Chinese, Greek and Italian origin presented with severe hemolytic jaundice due to red cell glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency. In five, the hemolysis was precipitated by inhalation of mothball vapours in the home. Kernicterus was evident upon admission in six infants and was fatal in four of these.G-6-PD deficiency should be suspected as a cause of jaundice in all full-term male infants of these ethnic groups. The diagnosis can be confirmed in any hospital by the methemoglobin reduction test. In areas similar to Toronto, Canada, where these high-risk ethnic groups prevail, the following measures are recommended: (1) detection of G-6-PD deficient newborns by screening cord bloods of all infants of these ethnic groups; (2) protection of affected infants from potentially hemolytic agents such as naphthalene, certain vitamin K preparations, and sulfonamides; and (3) observation of serum bilirubin levels to assess the need for exchange transfusion for hyperbilirubinemia.
