A Significant Increase in the Incidence of Central Precocious Puberty among Korean Girls from 2004 to 2010

Background

Few studies have explored the trends in central precocious puberty (CPP) in Asian populations. This study assessed the prevalence and annual incidence of CPP among Korean children.

Methods

Using data from the Korean Health Insurance Review Agency from 2004 to 2010, we reviewed the records of 21,351 children, including those registered with a diagnosis of CPP for the first time and those diagnosed with CPP who were treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs.

Results

The prevalence of CPP was 55.9 per 100,000 girls and 1.7 per 100,000 boys, respectively. The overall incidence of CPP was 15.3 per 100,000 girls, and 0.6 per 100,000 boys. The annual incidence of CPP in girls significantly increased from 3.3 to 50.4 per 100,000 girls; whereas in boys, it gradually increased from 0.3 to 1.2 per 100,000 boys. The annual incidence of CPP in girls consistently increased at all ages year by year, with greater increases at older ages (≥6 years of age), and smaller increases in girls aged < 6 years. In contrast, the annual incidence remained relatively constant in boys aged < 8 years, while a small increase was observed only in boys aged 8 years. The increase of annual incidence showed significant differences depending on age and gender (P <0.0001).

Conclusions

The annual incidence of CPP has substantially increased among Korean girls over the past 7 years. Continued monitoring of CPP trends among Korean children will be informative.     

Temperature and Carbon Assimilation Regulate the Chlorosome Biogenesis in Green Sulfur Bacteria

Green photosynthetic bacteria adjust the structure and functionality of the chlorosome—the light-absorbing antenna complex—in response to environmental stress factors. The chlorosome is a natural self-assembled aggregate of bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) molecules. In this study, we report the regulation of the biogenesis of the Chlorobaculum tepidum chlorosome by carbon assimilation in conjunction with temperature changes. Our studies indicate that the carbon source and thermal stress culture of C. tepidum grows slower and incorporates fewer BChl c in the chlorosome. Compared with the chlorosome from other cultural conditions we investigated, the chlorosome from the carbon source and thermal stress culture displays (a) smaller cross-sectional radius and overall size, (b) simplified BChl c homologs with smaller side chains, (c) blue-shifted Q_y absorption maxima, and (d) a sigmoid-shaped circular dichroism spectra. Using a theoretical model, we analyze how the observed spectral modifications can be associated with structural changes of BChl aggregates inside the chlorosome. Our report suggests a mechanism of metabolic regulation for chlorosome biogenesis.     

Implication of mouse Vps26b-Vps29-Vps35 retromer complex in sortilin trafficking

The retromer complex, which mediates retrograde transport from endosomes to the trans-Golgi network, is a heteropentameric complex that contains a multifunctional cargo recognition heterotrimer consisted of the vacuolar protein sorting (Vps) subunits Vps26, Vps29, and Vps35. In mammals, there are two different isoforms of Vps26, Vps26a and Vps26b, that localize to the endosome, and to the plasma membrane, respectively. To elucidate the biological significance of the Vps26b isoform, we generated Vps26b knockout mice and studied their molecular, histological, and behavioral phenotypes. We found that the loss of Vps26b results in no significant defects in the behavior, body size, and health of the mice. Vps26b-deficient mice showed a severe reduction of Vps35 protein at cellular level and lacked the Vps26b-Vps29-Vps35 retromer complex, despite the normal presence of the Vps26a-Vps29-Vps35 retromer complex. Relatively, the amount of sortilin was increased approximately 20% in the Vps26b-deficient mice, whereas the sorLA was normal. These results suggest that mouse Vps26b-Vps29-Vps35 retromer complex is implicated in the transport of sortilin from endosomes to the trans-Golgi network (TGN).     

Kinetics of the extraction of succinic acid with tri-n-octylamine in 1-octanol solution

Kinetic studies for the extraction of succinic acid from aqueous solution with 1-octanol solutions of tri-n-octylamine (TOA) were carried out using a stirred cell with a microporous hydrophobic membrane. The interfacial concentrations of species were correlated and thus the intrinsic kinetics was obtained. The overall extraction process was controlled by the chemical reaction at or near the interface between the aqueous and organic phases. The formation reaction of succinic acid-TOA complex was found to be first order with respect to the concentration of succinic acid in the aqueous phase and the order of 0.5 with respect to that of TOA in the organic phase with a rate constant of (3.14 +/- 0.6) x 10(-8) m(2.5) x mol(-0.5) x s(-1). The dissociation reaction of succinic acid-TOA complex was found to be the second-order with respect to that of succinic acid-TOA complex in the organic phase and the order of -2 with respect to that of TOA in the organic phase with a rate constant of (1.44 +/- 1.4) x 10(-4) mol x m(-2) x s(-1).     

Selective extraction of acetic acid from the fermentation broth produced by Mannheimia succiniciproducens

Acetic acid is by-product from fermentation processes for producing succinic acid using Mannheimia succiniciproducens . To obtain pure succinic acid from the final fermentation broth, acetic acid was selectively removed based on the different extractability of succinic acid and acetic acid with pH using tri-n-octylamine (TOA) as extractant. When successive batch extractions were performed using 0.25 mol TOA kg(-1) dissolved in 1-octanol at pH 5, the mol ratio of succinic acid to acetic acid before extraction was 4.9 and the final ratio after the fourth batch was 9.4.
