Stable sulfur isotope analysis of SO2 pollution impact on vegetation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary The 34S value of SO2 emitted by natural gas refineries is about +25, which is higher than that for non-industrial sulfur sources in our study areas. Terrestrial mosses absorb SO2 from the atmosphere and have a 34S value which is directly related to the degree of SO2 stress to which they are subjected. The 34S values for conifer needles are lower than for mosses at the same collection site, which indicates that trees obtain sulfur from both atmospheric and soil sources.Potted conifers were transferred to sites differing in their degree of SO2 stress. This difference is reflected by the change of 34S values of their needles. SO2 absorbant pot covers, such as charcoal and moss, reduce the amount of airborne sulfur which is available to tress. Moss also may reduce SO2 absorbed by soils in forest stands. We have used analysis of 34S values to (1) help define SO2 dispersion patterns; (2) reveal the rates at which plants accumulate this pollutant; and (3) associate suspected SO2 injury more closely to an emission source.  相似文献

Both ligand-based and GPCR privileged scaffold chemical tools have recently emerged to provide new insights into the function and physiology of the GPCR lysophospholipid receptors both in vitro and in vivo. Both rational, design-based approaches as well as hybrid approaches where high throughput screening has been coupled to an understanding of critical molecular interactions have been productive in advancing understanding of physiology and potential therapeutics in this field. It is now feasible to identify reasonably potent and selective small molecules that provide chemical proof-of-concept in vivo directly from high throughput screening. These developments, coupled with the availability of receptor knock-out mice, presage rapid progress in the field.  相似文献

Release from parasites, pathogens or predators (i.e. enemies) is a widely cited ‘rule of thumb’ to explain the proliferation of nonindigenous species in their introduced regions (i.e. the ‘enemy release hypothesis’, or ERH). Indeed, profound effects of some parasites and predators on host populations are well documented. However, some support for the ERH comes from studies that find a reduction in the species richness of enemies in the introduced range, relative to the native range, of particular hosts. For example, data on helminth parasites of the European starling in both its native Eurasia and in North America support a reduction of parasites in the latter. However, North American ‘founder’ starlings were likely not chosen randomly from across Eurasia. This could result in an overestimation of enemy release since enemies affect their hosts on a population level. We control for the effects of subsampling colonists and find, contrary to previous reports, no evidence that introduced populations of starlings experienced a reduction in the species richness of helminth parasites after colonization of North America. These results highlight the importance of choosing appropriate contrast groups in biogeographical analyses of biological invasions to minimize the confounding effects of ‘propagule biases’.  相似文献

The establishment of a system of protected areas that samples all ecosystems, including freshwater environments, in a comprehensive, adequate and representative (CAR) manner is regarded as a cornerstone for the conservation of biodiversity. There have been few quantitative assessments of the comprehensiveness, adequacy and representativeness of freshwater reserves in Australia. This paper reviews and quantifies the effect of classification of freshwater ecosystems for conservation planning, the importance of reservation status and protection measures for developing a CAR reserve system, and aspects of reserve design for freshwater ecosystems. We propose a strategic and iterative process that incorporates these measures to assist in the efficient and effective development of freshwater reserve systems worldwide. However, the provision of suitable water regimes for freshwater reserves presents further ecological and political challenges, and even adequate reservation of freshwater ecosystems may not conserve constituent biodiversity without effective management.  相似文献

Tissue samples and feces were collected from a dead, adult female coyote (Canis latrans) found at the side of the road in late March 2003 in the Avalon Peninsula region of Newfoundland, Canada. The coyote apparently died of vehicular-related trauma. Samples of lung, brain, heart, liver, and kidney were fixed in formalin and submitted for histologic examination. The entire remaining lung and heart also were submitted for examination. The coyote was diagnosed with moderate, multifocal, granulomatous interstitial pneumonia with eosinophilic vasculitis and many intralesional nematode eggs, larvae, and occasional intravascular adult worms. Adult nematodes recovered from the pulmonary arteries were identified as Angiostrongylus vasorum. Small foci of granulomatous inflammation, often containing nematode eggs and larvae, were scattered in the brain and kidney. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A. vasorum infection in a coyote from the only endemic area of infection in North America.  相似文献

The neuroprotective properties of bis(7)-tacrine, a novel dimeric acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, on glutamate-induced excitotoxicity were investigated in primary cultured cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs). Exposure of CGNs to 75 mum glutamate resulted in neuronal apoptosis as demonstrated by Hoechst staining, TUNEL, and DNA fragmentation assays. The bis(7)-tacrine treatment (0.01-1 mum) on CGNs markedly reduced glutamate-induced apoptosis in dose- and time-dependent manners. However, donepezil and other AChE inhibitors, even at concentrations of inhibiting AChE to the similar extents as 1 mum bis(7)-tacrine, failed to prevent glutamate-induced excitotoxicity in CGNs; moreover, both atropine and dihydro-beta-erythroidine, the cholinoreceptor antagonists, did not affect the anti-apoptotic properties of bis(7)-tacrine, suggesting that the neuroprotection of bis(7)-tacrine appears to be independent of inhibiting AChE and cholinergic transmission. In addition, ERK1/2 and p38 pathways, downstream signals of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, were rapidly activated after the exposure of glutamate to CGNs. Bis(7)-tacrine inhibited the apoptosis and the activation of these two signals with the same efficacy as the coapplication of PD98059 and SB203580. Furthermore, using fluorescence Ca(2+) imaging, patch clamp, and receptor-ligand binding techniques, bis(7)-tacrine was found effectively to buffer the intracellular Ca(2+) increase triggered by glutamate, to reduce NMDA-activated currents and to compete with [(3)H]MK-801 with an IC(50) value of 0.763 mum in rat cerebellar cortex membranes. These findings strongly suggest that bis(7)-tacrine prevents glutamate-induced neuronal apoptosis through directly blocking NMDA receptors at the MK-801-binding site, which offers a new and clinically significant modality as to how the agent exerts neuroprotective effects.  相似文献

Although global changes can alter ecosystem nutrient dynamics indirectly as a result of their effects on plant litter quality, the interactive effects of global changes on plant litter remain largely unexplored in natural communities. We investigated the effects of elevated CO2, N deposition, warming and increased precipitation on the composition of organic compounds in plant litter in a fully-factorial experiment conducted in a California annual grassland. While lignin increased within functional groups under elevated CO2, this effect was attenuated by warming in grasses and by water additions in forbs. CO2-induced increases in lignin within functional groups also were counteracted by an increase in the relative biomass of forbs, which contained less lignin than grasses. Consequently, there was no net change in the overall lignin content of senesced tissue at the plot level under elevated CO2. Nitrate additions increased N in both grass and forb litter, although this effect was attenuated by water additions. Relative to changes in N within functional groups, changes in functional group dominance had a minor effect on overall litter N at the plot level. Nitrate additions had the strongest effect on decomposition, increasing lignin losses from Avena litter and interacting with water additions to increase decomposition of litter of other grasses. Increases in lignin that resulted from elevated CO2 had no effect on decomposition but elevated CO2 increased N losses from Avena litter. Overall, the interactions among elements of global change were as important as single-factor effects in influencing plant litter chemistry. However, with the exception of variation in N, litter quality had little influence on decomposition over the short term.  相似文献

Saccharomyces cerevisiae encodes a single linker histone, Hho1p, with two globular domains. This raised the possibility that Hho1p could bind to two nucleosome cores simultaneously. To evaluate this idea, we studied the ability of a four-way junction, immobilized on the surface of a magnetic bead, to pull down a radiolabeled four-way junction in the presence of different Hho1 proteins. Four-way junctions are known to bind to H1, presumably due to structure similarities to the DNA at the nucleosomal entry/exit point. We found a significant increase in the ability of full-length Hho1p to pull down radiolabeled four-way junction DNA under ionic conditions where both globular domains could bind. The binding was structure specific, since the use of double-stranded DNA, or a mutant Hho1p in which the second DNA binding site of globular domain 1 was abolished, resulted in a significant decrease in bridged binding. Additionally, bridged binding required a covalent attachment between the two globular domains, since factor Xa protease treatment of the complex formed by a modified Hho1p that contained a factor Xa cleavage site between the two globular domains resulted in a significant release of radiolabeled four-way junction. These findings demonstrated that the two globular domains independently associated with two different four-way junction molecules in a manner that required amino acid residues implicated in structure-specific binding in the nucleosome. We discuss the implication of these findings on the chromatin structure of yeast and propose a model where a single Hho1 protein binds to two serially adjacent nucleosomes.  相似文献
