Allophanate lyase can be induced by urea or acetamied 20–40-fold within 4 h in NH4+-deprived cultures of Chlamydomonas reinhardi. In light-synchronized cultures, allophanate lyase induction appeared to be limited to the light phase of the cell cycle, provided that culture samples were induced under ongoing illumination conditions (i.e. light induction of light phase cells and dark induction of dark phase cells). However, when culture samples were induced under constant light conditions this cell cycle pattern was abolished. Light was found to be required for allophanate lyase induction and this was shown to be due, in part, to light requirement for inducer uptake. The relationship between allophanate lyase induction and gametogenesis is discussed. 相似文献

Effect of nickel on methane production and butyric acid utilization in a downflow fixed-film reactor
Summary Butyric acid conversion by a mixed methanogenic population in a pilot scale anaerobic downflow fixed-film reactor (DFFR), treating a cheese factory effluent was increased by the addition of nickel (30 mg/l NiCl2. 6H2O). The butyric acid concentration dropped abruptly (2300 to 150 mg/l) when the reactor was fed with Ni (II). Furthermore, when running two lab. scale DFFRs butyric acid utilization and methane production were slightly higher within the reactor supplemented with nickel than in the control reactor (without nickel). 相似文献

Summary The segregation of a heteroplasmic silent polymorphism in the mitochondrial ND6 gene has been followed in a human maternal lineage comprising eight individuals and spanning three generations. Heteroplasmy persisted in all eight maternally related family members. More importantly, the frequencies of the two alleles showed relatively little variation among individuals or between generations. In contrast to the findings in other mammalian lineages, the present results indicate relatively slow mitochondrial gene segregation. A narrow bottleneck in the number of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) molecules, which occurs at some stage of oogenesis, has been advanced to explain rapid mammalian mitochondrial gene segregation. It is suggested here that the segregation of mitochondrial genes may be more complex than initially envisaged, and that models need to be developed that account for both rapid and slow segregation. One possibility, which reconciles both physical and genetic studies of mammalian mtDNA, is that the unit of mitochondrial segregation is the organelle itself, each containing multiple mtDNA molecules. 相似文献

The mechanisms that restrict peptidoglycan biosynthesis to the pole during elongation and re‐direct peptidoglycan biosynthesis to mid‐cell during cell division in polar‐growing Alphaproteobacteria are largely unknown. Here, we explore the role of early division proteins of Agrobacterium tumefaciens including three FtsZ homologs, FtsA and FtsW in the transition from polar growth to mid‐cell growth and ultimately cell division. Although two of the three FtsZ homologs localize to mid‐cell, exhibit GTPase activity and form co‐polymers, only one, FtsZAT, is required for cell division. We find that FtsZAT is required not only for constriction and cell separation, but also for initiation of peptidoglycan synthesis at mid‐cell and cessation of polar peptidoglycan biosynthesis. Depletion of FtsZAT in A. tumefaciens causes a striking phenotype: cells are extensively branched and accumulate growth active poles through tip splitting events. When cell division is blocked at a later stage by depletion of FtsA or FtsW, polar growth is terminated and ectopic growth poles emerge from mid‐cell. Overall, this work suggests that A. tumefaciens FtsZ makes distinct contributions to the regulation of polar growth and cell division. 相似文献

Activity budget comparisons between groups or individuals in the wild and those in captivity are commonly used to determine the range of wild-type behaviors that nonhuman animals in captivity perform. These comparisons are conducted with the view that individuals displaying a greater range of wild-type behaviors have enhanced welfare. Such comparisons have a greater appeal when it comes to primates because increased levels of anthropomorphism toward primates lead to welfare concerns. However, the validity of such comparisons has not been assessed. From the reviewed literature, some of the main complexities identified when defining “good welfare” using activity budgets were the ideas of behavioral motivation and adaptation, obstacles when using the wild as a benchmark for good welfare, study methods causing possible variances in behavior, and social and environmental factors. It is proposed that such influencing factors would be controlled for adequately in future studies with the use of multiple indices to measure welfare and methods that infer positive emotional states. It is hoped we can then build evidence of an animal’s emotional state and allow welfare to be inferred to a higher degree. 相似文献
