Terrestrial carbon sinks--uncertain explanations

The carbon cycle is fundamental to life on Earth and it determines the amount of carbon dioxide that will remain in the atmosphere. As concentrations increase, understanding the processes that remove carbon from the atmosphere becomes crucial. Armed with this understanding, there is a chance that humanity can enhance carbon removal at the same time as reducing emissions.     

A study of the effects of near UV radiation on the pigmentation of the blue-green alga Gloeocapsa alpicola

The UV survival characteristics of a wildtype and a UV resistant strain of Gloeocapsa alpicola were compared. Except for a higher carotenoid content the resistant strain was similar to the wild-type.However, on exposure to UV radiation the level of carotenoids in the wild-type fell sharply whereas no such decrease occurred in the resistant strain.Growth of cells in diphenylamine and under red and blue light reduced the survival rate. This phenomenon is linked with a reduced carotenoid level in the cell, indicating that they perform an important protective function.     

Rocker jaws

Most adult Polynesian mandibles are of the rocker form. Polynesian crania possess a very open cranial base angle and a large upper facial height. The mandibular growth rotations necessary to maintain occlusion in the presence of this cranial morphology lead to development of an exceptionally closed ramus-body angle, with consequent loss of the antegonial notch and appearance of the rocker form.
