Humpback whale seasonal migrations, spanning greater than 6500 km of open ocean, demonstrate remarkable navigational precision despite following spatially and temporally distinct migration routes. Satellite-monitored radio tag-derived humpback whale migration tracks in both the South Atlantic and South Pacific include constant course segments of greater than 200 km, each spanning several days of continuous movement. The whales studied here maintain these directed movements, often with better than 1° precision, despite the effects of variable sea-surface currents. Such remarkable directional precision is difficult to explain by established models of directional orientation, suggesting that alternative compass mechanisms should be explored.  相似文献

Male reproductive coalitions, in which males cooperate to attract females, are a rare strategy among vertebrates. While some studies have investigated ultimate aspects of these relationships, little is known about the mechanistic role that hormones play in modulating cooperative behaviours. Here, we examined male testosterone variation in a tropical lekking bird, the wire-tailed manakin (Pipra filicauda), which exhibits cooperative male-male display coalitions. We found that testosterone levels in territorial males were comparable to those of temperate breeding birds, a surprising result given their environmental, social and reproductive dynamics. In addition, social status rather than plumage was a strong predictor of testosterone variation. Territorial males had significantly higher testosterone levels than did two other plumage classes of floater males, who do not hold territories. We hypothesize that testosterone variation plays an important role in the establishment of male dominance hierarchies (competition), while concurrently facilitating stable display partnerships (cooperation).  相似文献

The A391E mutation in the transmembrane domain of fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 leads to aberrant development of the cranium. It has been hypothesized that the mutant glutamic acid stabilizes the dimeric receptor due to hydrogen bonding and enhances its ligand-independent activation. We previously tested this hypothesis in lipid bilayers and showed that the mutation stabilizes the isolated transmembrane domain dimer by -1.3°kcal/mol. Here we further test the hypothesis, by investigating the effect of the A391E mutation on the activation of full-length fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 in human embryonic kidney 293T cells in the absence of ligand. We find that the mutation enhances the ligand-independent activation propensity of the receptor by -1.7°kcal/mol. This value is consistent with the observed strength of hydrogen bonds in membranes, and supports the above hypothesis.  相似文献

Relaxin (RLN) is a systemic hormone from the corpus luteum, and its levels remain low during normal human gestation. Indeed, elevation of circulating RLN has long been associated with preterm birth, for which there has been no physiological explanation. Recent studies have shown that RLN suppresses endotoxin-induced cytokine secretion from THP-1 monocytic cells by acting on the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), but its effects on primary macrophages are unknown. Therefore, in the present study, we examined the effects of RLN on cytokine secretion from primary decidual macrophages (DMs) obtained at term before labor. Unlike THP-1 cells, RLN had no effects on the cytokine responses induced by either lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or interleukin (IL) 1B, mimicking infection-induced or sterile inflammation, respectively. However, RLN alone for 4 h significantly decreased (P < 0.05) colony-stimulating factor 2 (CSF2; also known as granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor) and IL8 but for 24 h significantly increased IL6 (P < 0.01). We show that DMs express both the RLN receptor (RXFP1) and the GR. RLN suppression of CSF2 and IL8 was sensitive to the GR-antagonist mifepristone (RU-486). However, RLN activation of RXFP1 induced a dose-dependent cAMP response, which when mimicked by forskolin also caused significantly increased (P < 0.05) secretion of IL6. Thus, RLN may be anti-inflammatory in DMs via activation of the GR but proinflammatory via activation of RXFP1 and cAMP. In summary, we have shown that RLN targeting DMs may modulate proinflammatory cytokine secretion at the maternal-fetal interface and contribute to the localized inflammatory response associated with parturition in women.  相似文献

Pulmonary fibrosis is an untreatable, uniformly fatal disease of unclear etiology that is the result of unremitting chronic inflammation. Recent studies have implicated bone marrow derived fibrocytes and M2 macrophages as playing key roles in propagating fibrosis. While the disease process is characterized by the accumulation of lymphocytes in the lung parenchyma and alveolar space, their role remains unclear. In this report we definitively demonstrate the ability of T cells to regulate lung inflammation leading to fibrosis. Specifically we demonstrate the ability of intranasal vaccinia vaccination to inhibit M2 macrophage generation and fibrocyte recruitment and hence the accumulation of collagen and death due to pulmonary failure. Mechanistically, we demonstrate the ability of lung Th1 cells to prevent fibrosis as vaccinia failed to prevent disease in Rag-/- mice or in mice in which the T cells lacked IFN-γ. Furthermore, vaccination 3 months prior to the initiation of fibrosis was able to mitigate the disease. Our findings clearly demonstrate the role of T cells in regulating pulmonary fibrosis as well as suggest that vaccinia-induced immunotherapy in the lung may prove to be a novel treatment approach to this otherwise fatal disease.  相似文献

A direct impact of chloroplastic protective energy dissipation (qE) on photosynthetic CO(2) assimilation has not been shown directly in plants in the absence of photoinhibition. To test this empirically we transformed rice to possess higher (overexpressors, OE) and lower (RNA interference, RNAi) levels of expression of the regulatory psbS gene and analysed CO(2) assimilation in transformants in a fluctuating measurement light regime. Western blots showed a several-fold difference in levels of PsbS protein between RNAi and OE plants with the wild type (WT) being intermediate. At a growth light intensity of 600 μmol m(-2) sec(-1) , the carboxylation capacity, electron transport capacity and dark adapted F(v)/F(m) (ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence) were inhibited in RNAi plants compared with WT and OE. The PsbS content had a significant impact on qE (measured here as non-photochemical quenching, NPQ) but the strongest effect was observed transiently, immediately following the application of light. This capacity for qE was several-fold lower in RNAi plants and significantly higher in OE plants during the first 10 min of illumination. At steady state the differences were reduced: notably at 500 μmol m(-2) sec(-1) all plants had the same NPQ values regardless of PsbS content. During a series of light-dark transitions the induction of CO(2) assimilation was inhibited in OE plants, reducing integrated photosynthesis during the light period. We conclude that the accumulation of PsbS and the resultant qE exerts control over photosynthesis in fluctuating light, showing that optimization of photoprotective processes is necessary for maximum photosynthetic productivity even in the absence of photoinhibitory stress.  相似文献

Bacterial resistance to β-lactam antibiotics caused by class B metallo-β-lactamases (MBL), especially for certain hospital-acquired, Gram-negative pathogens, poses a significant threat to public health. We report several 2-substituted 4,5-dihydrothiazole-4-carboxylic acids to be novel MBL inhibitors. Structure activity relationship (SAR) and molecular modeling studies were performed and implications for further inhibitor design are discussed.  相似文献

The relation between lecture attendance and learning is surprisingly weak, and the role of learning styles in this is poorly understood. We hypothesized that 1) academic performance is related to lecture attendance and 2) learning style influences lecture attendance and, consequently, affects performance. We also speculated that the availability of alternative resources would affect this relationship. Second-year Bachelor of Science physiology students (n = 120) self-reported their lecture attendance in a block of 21 lectures (attendance not compulsory) and use of alternative resources. Overall self-reported lecture attendance was 73 ± 2%. Female students (n = 71) attended more lectures (16.4 ± 0.6) than male students (14.3 ± 0.08, n = 49) and achieved a higher composite mark in all assessments (73.6% vs. 69.3%, P < 0.02). Marks in the final exam were not statistically different between the sexes and correlated only weakly with lecture attendance (r = 0.29, n = 49, P < 0.04 for male students; r = 0.10, n = 71, P = not significant for female students; and r =0.21, n = 120, P < 0.02 for the whole class). Of the students who passed the exam, poor attenders (<11 lectures) reported significantly more use of lecture recordings (37 ± 8%, n = 15, vs. 10 ± 1%, n = 85, P < 0.001). In a VARK learning style assessment (where V is visual, A is auditory, R is reading/writing, and K is kinesthetic), students were multimodal, although female students had a slightly higher average percentage of the R learning style (preferred read/write) compared with male students (28.9 ± 0.9%, n = 63, vs. 25.3 ± 1.3%, n = 32, P < 0.03). Lecture attendance was not correlated with measured learning style. We concluded that lecture attendance is only weakly correlated with academic performance and is not related to learning style. The substitution of alternative materials for lecture attendance appears to have a greater role than learning style in determining academic outcomes.  相似文献

Lyssaviruses (family Rhabdoviridae) constitute one of the most important groups of viral zoonoses globally. All lyssaviruses cause the disease rabies, an acute progressive encephalitis for which, once symptoms occur, there is no effective cure. Currently available vaccines are highly protective against the predominantly circulating lyssavirus species. Using next-generation sequencing technologies, we have obtained the whole-genome sequence for a novel lyssavirus, Ikoma lyssavirus (IKOV), isolated from an African civet in Tanzania displaying clinical signs of rabies. Genetically, this virus is the most divergent within the genus Lyssavirus. Characterization of the genome will help to improve our understanding of lyssavirus diversity and enable investigation into vaccine-induced immunity and protection.  相似文献
