Evidence for various calcium sites in human hair shaft revealed by sub-micrometer X-ray fluorescence

New information about calcium status in human scalp hair shaft, deduced from X-ray micro-fluorescence imaging, including its distribution over the hair section, the existence of one or several binding-types and its variation between people, is presented. The existence of two different calcium types is inferred. The first one corresponds to atoms (or ions) easily removable by hydrochloric acid, located in the cortex (granules), in the cuticle zone and also in the core of the medulla, which can reasonably be identified as calcium soaps. The second type consists of non-easily removable calcium atoms (or ions) that are located in the medulla wall, probably also in the cuticle, and rather uniformly in the cortex; these calcium atoms may be involved in Ca(2+)-binding proteins, and their concentration is fairly constant from one subject to another. In addition to its nonuniform distribution across the hair section, the second striking feature of the first type calcium content is its high variability from one subject to another, by up to a factor 10. We expect this information to be useful for analyzing in more detail the relationship between hair calcium and environmental and medical factors. 相似文献

The transition of blastospores to the mycelial phase in Candida albicans was induced after the blastospores were kept at 4 degrees C for several hours and then transferred to a fresh medium prewarmed at 37 degrees C. Glucan was the most abundant polymer in the wall in the two morphogenetic forms but the amount of chitin was higher in the mycelial form than in blastospores. Efficient protoplasting required reducing agents and proteases together with beta-glucanases (zymolyase). Protein synthesis in regenerating protoplasts was initiated after about 30 min. Chitin synthetase, initially very low, was incorporated in important amounts into cell membranes mainly in a zymogenic state. After a few hours chitin was the most abundant polymer found in the aberrant wall of the regenerating protoplast. 相似文献

Four colonies of the stingless bee Partamona cupira (Hymenoptera: Apidae) were cytogenetically analyzed using conventional staining and the fluorochromes CMA(3) e DAPI. The females have 2n = 34 chromosomes (2K = 32 Mˉ+2 Aˉ). Some females, however, presented an additional large B acrocentric chromosome, to a total of 2n = 35. Chromosome B and the chromosomal pairs 2, 9 and 10 showed CMA (3) (+) bands, indicating an excess of CG base-pairs. A clear association was verified between the P. helleri B chromosome SCAR marker and the presence of a B chromosome in P. cupira. The data obtained suggests that B chromosomes in P. helleri and P. cupira share a common origin. 相似文献

1 Competitive interactions among two specialist predators, Laricobius nigrinus and Sasajiscymnus (Pseudoscymnus) tsugae, and a generalist predator, Harmonia axyridis Pallas, of hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae were evaluated in hemlock stands in south‐western Virginia. The two specialist predators are part of a biological control program for A. tsugae, and the potential for competition among these species and previously established generalist predators in the field is unknown. 2 Adult predators were evaluated in branch cages during spring and summer at two field sites infested with A. tsugae. Using females only in 2003 and sexual pairs in 2004, predator survival and net reproduction were examined, as well as their feeding and impact on A. tsugae when present alone and in conspecific and heterospecific groupings. 3 Predator survival was not affected by the presence of additional predators. Total feeding was greater for all species when placed in predator groupings, suggesting that interactions do not significantly interfere with feeding activity. Net reproduction per predator was negatively affected by conspecifics, but unaffected by heterospecifics, indicating that direct or indirect intraspecific interference may occur. In spring, L. nigrinus showed the greatest impact on A. tsugae, and H. axyridis had the greatest impact during summer. 4 These results suggest that it would be beneficial to utilize multiple predator species combinations over single species when implementing biological control for A. tsugae. Low‐density releases are also recommended to reduce intraspecific interference. 相似文献

Cement is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. Its characteristics, physicochemical properties and manufacturing process have long been the object of study. However, at this moment in time, the production of this basic construction material still accounts for 5% of worldwide emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere. Thus, in this age of the ongoing battle against climate change, cement alone has become a key objective to which measures must be applied to mitigate the negative impact of this material on the environment. This article evaluates the sustainability of a cement industry by using one of the most rigorous tools currently in existence – the Composed Method of Financial Accounts (MC3) in its second version V.2.0. The study is based on the analysis of three model plants: (A) a conventional integral plant, (B) a grinding plant, and (C) an integral plant which has introduced the best available techniques or BAT into the manufacturing process. Therefore, the two most common scenarios in today's market (A and B) can be compared with another plant of the same size (C) in which CO2 emissions are reduced thanks to the application of BAT. Lastly, the results are compared in each case study, establishing a diagnosis of weaknesses and opportunities for each production system as well as specific measures for action to be applied to each link in the chain that makes up the production process. Also computed is the amount in tons of CO2 generated in the manufacture of one ton of cement. This value is of great use in the application of other methodologies such as LCA, or in the feedback of the MC3 methodology used here. 相似文献

Polymorphic minisatellites, also known as variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs), are tandem repeat regions that show variation in the number of repeat units among chromosomes in a population. Currently, there are no general methods for predicting which minisatellites have a high probability of being polymorphic, given their sequence characteristics. An earlier approach has focused on potentially highly polymorphic and hypervariable minisatellites, which make up only a small fraction of all minisatellites in the human genome. We have developed a model, based on available minisatellite and VNTR sequence data, that predicts the probability that a minisatellite (unit size > or = 6 bp) identified by the computer program Tandem Repeats Finder is polymorphic (VNTR). According to the model, minisatellites with high copy number and high degree of sequence similarity are most likely to be VNTRs. This approach was used to scan the draft sequence of the human genome for VNTRs. A total of 157,549 minisatellite repeats were found, of which 29,224 are predicted to be VNTRs. Contrary to previous results, VNTRs appear to be widespread and abundant throughout the human genome, with an estimated density of 9.1 VNTRs/Mb. 相似文献

G-protein-coupled receptor function involves interactions between the receptor, G-proteins and effectors in the cell plasma
membrane. The main biochemical processes have been individually identified but the mechanisms governing the successive protein–protein
interactions of this complex multi-molecular machinery have yet to be established. We discuss advances in understanding the
functional dynamics of the receptor resulting from diffusion measurements, and in the context of the plasma membrane organization.
