Background:
Body adiposity index (BAI), indirect method proposed to predict adiposity, was developed using Mexican Americans and very little data are available regarding its validation in Caucasian populations to date.Objective:
The study objectives were to validate the BAI with dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) body fat percentage (%BF), taking into consideration the gender and adiposity status.Design and Methods:
A total of 2,601 subjects (Male 662, Female 1939) from our Complex Diseases in the Newfoundland population: Environment and Genetics (CODING) study participated in this investigation. Pearson correlations, with the entire cohort along with men and women separately, were used to compare the correlation of both BAI and BMI with %BF. Additionally, the concordance between BAI and BMI with %BF were also performed among normal‐weight (NW), overweight (OW), and obese (OB) groups. Adiposity status was determined by the Bray Criteria according to DXA %BF.Results:
BAI performs better than BMI in our Caucasian population by: (1) reflecting the gender difference in total %BF between women and men, (2) correlating better with DXA %BF than BMI when women and men are combined, and (3) performing better in NW and OW subjects for both the sexes. However, BAI performs less effectively than BMI in OB men and women.Conclusion:
In summary, the BAI method is a better estimate of adiposity than BMI in non‐OB subjects in our Caucasian population. A measurement sensitive to the changes in adiposity for both men and women is suggested to be incorporated into the present BAI equation to increase accuracy. 相似文献53.

Drosophila
compound eye is a large sensory organ that places a high demand on oxygen supplied by the tracheal system. Although the development and function of the
Drosophila
visual system has been extensively studied, the development and contribution of its tracheal system has not been systematically examined. To address this issue, we studied the tracheal patterns and developmental process in the
Drosophila
visual system. We found that the retinal tracheae are derived from air sacs in the head, and the ingrowth of retinal trachea begin at mid-pupal stage. The tracheal development has three stages. First, the air sacs form near the optic lobe in 42-47% of pupal development (pd). Second, in 47-52% pd, air sacs extend branches along the base of the retina following a posterior-to-anterior direction and further form the tracheal network under the fenestrated membrane (TNUFM). Third, the TNUFM extend fine branches into the retina following a proximal-to-distal direction after 60% pd. Furthermore, we found that the trachea extension in both retina and TNUFM are dependent on the FGF(Bnl)/FGFR(Btl) signaling. Our results also provided strong evidence that the photoreceptors are the source of the Bnl ligand to guide the trachea ingrowth. Our work is the first systematic study of the tracheal development in the visual system, and also the first study demonstrating the interactions of two well-studied systems: the eye and trachea. 相似文献

As an important bulk chemical, benzoic acid is currently manufactured from nonrenewable feedstocks under harsh conditions. Although there are natural pathways for biosynthesis of benzoic acid, they are often inefficient and subjected to complex regulation. Here we develop a nonnatural enzyme cascade to efficiently produce benzoic acid from styrene or biogenic L -phenylalanine under mild conditions. By using a modular approach, two whole-cell catalysts Escherichia coli LZ305 and LZ325 are engineered for coexpressing seven and nine enzymes for production of 133–146 mM benzoic acid (16.2–17.8 g/Laq) with 88–97% conversion via seven- and nine-step cascade biotransformation of styrene and L -phenylalanine, respectively. The seven-step cascade represents a formal high-yielding biocatalytic oxidative cleavage of styrene, and the nine-step cascade showcases the high efficiency of extended nonnatural enzyme cascades. Moreover, to achieve benzoic acid production directly from low-cost renewable glycerol, a novel coupled fermentation-biotransformation process was developed by integration of fermentative production of L -phenylalanine with in situ biotransformation to give 63–70 mM benzoic acid (7.6–8.6 g/Laq), which is around 20 times higher than the reported value via a natural pathway. The coupled fermentation-biotransformation process could be generally applicable to microbial production of growth-inhibitory or toxic chemicals in high concentrations. 相似文献

Transferrin receptor (TfR) has been used as a target for the antibody-based therapy of cancer due to its higher expression in tumors relative to normal tissues. Great potential has been shown by anti-TfR antibodies combined with chemotherapeutic drugs as a possible cancer therapeutic strategy. In our study, we investigated the anti-tumor effects of anti-TfR monoclonal antibody (mAb) alone or in combination with sinomenine hydrochloride in vitro. Results suggested that anti-TfR mAb or sinomenine hydrochloride could induce apoptosis, inhibit proliferation, and affect the cell cycle. A synergistic effect was found in relation to tumor growth inhibition and the induction of apoptosis when anti-TfR mAb and sinomenine hydrochloride were used simultaneously. The expression of COX-2 and VEGF protein in HepG2 cells treated with anti-TfR mAb alone was increased in line with increasing dosage of the agent. In contrast, COX-2 expression was dramatically decreased in HepG2 cells treated with sinomenine hydrochloride alone. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the inhibitory effects of sinomenine hydrochloride and anti-TfR mAb administered in combination were more prominent than when the agents were administered singly. To sum up, these results showed that the combined use of sinomenine hydrochloride and anti-TfR mAb may exert synergistic inhibitory effects on human hepatoma HepG2 cells in a COX-2-dependent manner. This finding provides new insight into how tumor cells overcome the interference of iron intake to survive and forms the basis of a new therapeutic strategy involving the development of anti-TfR mAb combined with sinomenine hydrochloride for liver cancer. 相似文献

AbstractBiological contamination of surfaces in industry and healthcare is an important vector of disease transmission. Current assays for detecting surface-adherent contamination require extraction of biological soil. However, physical inaccessibility or poor solubility may limit recovery. Here, how the o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) protein assay can be modified to measure residual protein (modeled with bovine serum albumin) or biofilm on a surface without extraction is described. The assay limit of detection (LOD) for protein was 1.6 µg cm?2. The detection threshold for Staphylococcus epidermis biofilm was 117 µg cm?2. The clinical utility of the method was demonstrated for measurements taken from clinically used endoscopes. Since this method is more sensitive than extraction-based testing, clinical results should not be compared with conventional benchmarks. By enabling direct detection and quantification of soils in complex or hard-to-reach areas, this method has potential to improve the margin of safety in medical and industrial cleaning processes. 相似文献
