Many insect species rely on their sense of audition to find a mate, to localize prey or to escape from a predator. Cicadas are particularly known for their loud call and the conspicuous tympanal hearing system located in their abdomen. The vibration pattern of the tympanal membrane (TM) has been investigated recently revealing mechanical properties specific to species and sex. Although TM size and shape is likely to affect these patterns, the geometry of the cicada ear has never been examined per se. Focusing on three Mediterranean cicada species, namely Cicadatra atra, Cicada orni and Lyristes plebejus, we investigated the structure of TM shape variation at two levels, within and across species. Applying an elliptic Fourier analysis to the outlines of both male and female TMs, we estimated sexual dimorphism and species effects. Cicadatra atra showed a large TM compared with its small size, probably as a result of selective constraints related to the role of the TM in sound production. Sexual dimorphism seemed to be greater than interspecific variation, indicating that constraints operating on sex might be more selective than those acting on species identification. In addition, C. orni appeared to be significantly different from the two other species. This morphological peculiarity could be related to the unique vibrational pattern of its membrane. - 1 The objective of this study, which is based on forty-two species of hydrophytes and helophytes, is to investigate: (i) relationships among species traits; (ii) habitat utilization by species; (iii) the relationship between species traits and habitat utilization; (iv) trends in species traits in the framework of spatial–temporal habitat variability, and if trends match predictions from the river habitat templet; and (v) trends in species richness in the framework of spatial–temporal habitat variability, and if trends match predictions of the patch dynamics concept.
- 2 Two data sets were used for this analysis: species traits (mainly reproductive and morphological characteristics) were documented from the literature; and species distribution across eight habitat types was from field surveys conducted in the floodplain of the Upper Rhone River, France. This information was structured by a fuzzy coding technique and analysed by ordination methods.
- 3 Several species traits, which are related to disturbances and reflect resistance (e.g. attachment to soil or substrate) or resilience (e.g. potential for regeneration of an individual), are closely related for aquatic macrophytes.
- 4 Habitat utilization by aquatic macrophytes separates the habitat types along a gradient of connectivity with the main channel, which corresponds to a gradient in flood disturbance frequency and the permanence of the different water-bodies.
- 5 The relationship between species traits and habitat utilization is highly significant, indicating that a particular set of habitat types is used by taxa with a particular set of species trait modalities.
- 6 Observations in one habitat templet (in which scaling of the templet is primarily based on water level fluctuations for the temporal variability axis and on substrate characteristics for the spatial variability axis) generally do not support predictions on trends in species traits but do support predictions on trends in species richness.
- 7 Observations in an alternative habitat templet (in which scaling of the templet is based on frequency of flood scouring for the temporal variability axis and on heterogeneity of the substrate for the spatial variability axis) support theoretical predictions on trends for about half of the species traits for which predictions were available. However, trends in species richness in this alternative habitat templet are only partly in agreement with predictions.

Dithiobis (succinimidyl propionate) has been used to cross-link sarcoplasmic reticulum microsome proteins. Although the 100,000 dalton calcium stimulated ATPase and the 60,000 dalton calcium-binding protein calsequestrin were readily cross-linked to form homopolymers, no heteropolymer formation between these two proteins were detected. The 90,000 dalton protein A1 which is always observed in our preparations appeared to preferrentially form dimers on cross-linking. When calsequestrin was solubilized using 0.1 mg deoxycholate/mg protein, this protein was not cross-linked even at dithiobis(succinimidyl propionate) concentrations ten times those used to cross-link this protein in the intact membrane. In a similar manner the deoxycholate-solubilized ATPase (0.5 mg deoxycholate/mg protein) was not cross-linked by dithiobis (succinimidyl propionate). These results suggest that the state of aggregation of the sarcoplasmic reticulum proteins may be modified when solubilized in detergents such as deoxycholate. When the 100,000 dalton ATPase polypeptide was cleaved with trypsin to two fragments with molecular weights of approximately 55,000, these could be readily cross-linked. The fragments were capable of forming polymers with either other 55,000 dalton fragments or with the 100,000 dalton ATPase. The 29,000 and 22,000 dalton fragments, produced by further tryptic cleavage of the 55,000 dalton fragments, were not cross-linked at dithiobis (succinimidyl propionate) concentrations which readily cross-linked the 55,000 dalton fragments. Thus tryptic cleavage of the ATPase to fragments smaller than 55,000 dalton altered associations made by the ATPase in the membrane. 相似文献

Sets of SNARE proteins mediate membrane fusion by assembling into core complexes. Multiple SNAREs are thought to function in different intracellular trafficking steps but it is often unclear which of the SNAREs cooperate in individual fusion reactions. We report that syntaxin 7, syntaxin 8, vti1b and endobrevin/VAMP-8 form a complex that functions in the fusion of late endosomes. Antibodies specific for each protein coprecipitate the complex, inhibit homotypic fusion of late endosomes in vitro and retard delivery of endocytosed epidermal growth factor to lysosomes. The purified proteins form core complexes with biochemical and biophysical properties remarkably similar to the neuronal core complex, although each of the four proteins carries a transmembrane domain and three have independently folded N-terminal domains. Substitution experiments, sequence and structural comparisons revealed that each protein occupies a unique position in the complex, with syntaxin 7 corresponding to syntaxin 1, and vti1b and syntaxin 8 corresponding to the N- and C-terminal domains of SNAP-25, respectively. Serving capacity studies were conducted on Santa Gertrudis, 5/8 Brahman, Brahman and Belmont Red bulls at 10 sites. Modifications, such as providing prior sexual experience, using females in oestrus and comparing restrained with unrestrained females, were made to the standard Bos taurus serving capacity test in a series of experiments with Santa Gertrudis bulls. Providing sexual experience to virgin bulls prior to testing improved the number of serves and libido scores in a serving capacity test. In serving capacity tests that used restrained females, expressions of sexual behaviour of bulls were not improved by having females in oestrus compared with non-oestrus females. There were more sexual behaviours, particularly mounts, in serving capacity tests involving restrained rather than unrestrained females. Summary statistics were collated from over 1100 serving capacity tests, in the 2 months prior to mating, across the 10 sites. In serving capacity tests using restrained females, in bulls of the same age, there were more expressions of sexual behaviours (except interest) in Belmont Red than in Brahman or 5/8 Brahman bulls with Santa Gertrudis bulls intermediate. The percentage of bulls displaying serves tended to increase with age; 82, 83 and 86% of 2-, 3- and > or =4-year-old Belmont Red bulls, respectively, completed 1 or more serves. This compared with 50, 50 and 66% of 2-, 3- and > or =4-year-old Santa Gertrudis bulls and 31% of 2-year-old Brahman bulls. Between 2 and 9% of bulls did not display any sexual behaviour in serving capacity tests with restrained females. Across genotypes, there were few and inconsistent relationships between either mounts or serves and liveweight, condition score, scrotal circumference, testicular tone and sheath measurements. The exceptions were in 2-year-old Brahmans where mounts were negatively correlated (r=-0.61; P<0.05) with umbilicus thickness and in 3-year-old Santa Gertrudis bulls, where serves (r=-0.53; P<0.01) and mounts+serves (r=-0.49; P<0.01) were negatively correlated with navel score. Measures of sexual behaviour were unable to consistently predict calf output of bulls in multiple-sire mating groups in extensive pastoral conditions. The Gray-faced Sengi (Rhynchocyon udzungwensis) is a newly-discovered species of sengi (elephant-shrew) and is the largest known extant representative of the order Macroscelidea. The discovery of R. udzungwensis provides an opportunity to investigate the scaling relationship between brain size and body size within Macroscelidea, and to compare this allometry among insectivorous species of Afrotheria and other eutherian insectivores. We performed a spin-echo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan on a preserved adult specimen of R. udzungwensis using a 7-Tesla high-field MR imaging system. The brain was manually segmented and its volume was compiled into a dataset containing previously-published allometric data on 56 other species of insectivore-grade mammals including representatives of Afrotheria, Soricomorpha and Erinaceomorpha. Results of log-linear regression indicate that R. udzungwensis exhibits a brain size that is consistent with the allometric trend described by other members of its order. Inter-specific comparisons indicate that macroscelideans as a group have relatively large brains when compared with similarly-sized terrestrial mammals that also share a similar diet. This high degree of encephalization within sengis remains robust whether sengis are compared with closely-related insectivorous afrotheres, or with more-distantly-related insectivorous laurasiatheres. 相似文献

BackgroundUnprotected anal intercourse (UAI) is a major pathway towards secondary HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM). We explored the socio-cultural environment and individual beliefs and experiences conducive to UAI in the context of Southern China.MethodsWe employed an ethnographic approach utilizing a socio-ecological framework to conduct repeated in-depth interviews with thirty one newly diagnosed HIV positive MSM as well as participant observations in Shenzhen based healthcare settings, MSM venues and NGO offices.ResultsSome men (6/31) reported continuing to practice UAI after an initial diagnosis of being HIV positive. For MSM who had existing lovers or stable partners, the fear of losing partners in a context of non-serostatus disclosure was testified to be a major concern. MSM with casual partners reported that anonymous sexual encounters and moral judgments played a significant role in their sexual risk behaviors. Simultaneously, self-reported negative emotional and psychological status, perception and idiosyncratic risk interpretation, as well as substance abuse informed the intrapersonal context for UAI.ConclusionUAI among these HIV positive MSM was embedded in an intrapersonal context, related to partner type, shaped by anonymous sexual encounters, psychological status, and moral judgments. It is important that prevention and intervention for secondary HIV transmission among newly diagnosed HIV positive MSM in China take into account these contextual factors. 相似文献
