Interspecific interactions can affect population dynamics and the evolution of species traits by altering demographic rates such as reproduction and survival. The influence of mutualism on population processes is thought to depend on both the benefits and costs of the interaction. However, few studies have explicitly quantified both benefits and costs in terms of demographic rates; furthermore there has been little consideration as to how benefits and costs depend on the demographic effects of factors extrinsic to the interaction. I studied how benefits (pollination) and costs (larval fruit consumption) of pollinating seed-consumers (senita moths) affect the reproduction of senita cacti and how these effects may rely on extrinsic water limitation for reproduction. Fruit initiation was not limited by moth pollination, but survival of initiated fruit increased when moth eggs were removed from flowers. Watered cacti produced more flowers and initiated more fruit from hand-pollinated flowers than did unwatered cacti, but fruit initiation remained low despite excess pollen. Even though water, pollination and larvae each affected a component of cactus reproduction, when all of these factors were included in a factorial experiment, pollination and water determined rates of reproduction. Counter-intuitively, larval fruit consumption had a negligible effect on cactus reproduction. By quantifying both benefits and costs of mutualism in terms of demographic rates, this study demonstrates that benefits and costs can be differentially influential to population processes and that interpretation of their influences can depend on demographic effects of factors extrinsic to the interaction.  相似文献

Coevolved mutualisms, such as those between senita cacti, yuccas, and their respective obligate pollinators, benefit both species involved in the interaction. However, in these pollination mutualisms the pollinator's larvae impose a cost on plants through consumption of developing seeds and fruit. The effects of pollinators on benefits and costs are expected to vary with the abundance of pollinators, because large population sizes result in more eggs and larval seed-eaters. Here, we develop the hypothesis that fruit abortion, which is common in yucca, senita, and plants in general, could in some cases have the function of limiting pollinator abundance and, thereby, increasing fruit production. Using a general steady-state model of fruit production and pollinator dynamics, we demonstrate that plants involved in pollinating seed-eater mutualisms can increase their fecundity by randomly aborting fruit. We show that the ecological conditions under which fruit abortion can improve plants fecundity are not unusual. They are best met when the plant is long-lived, the population dynamics of the pollinator are much faster than those of the plant, the loss of one fruit via abortion kills a larva that would have the expectation of destroying more than one fruit through its future egg laying as an adult moth, and the effects of fruit abortion on pollinator abundance are spatially localized. We then use the approach of adaptive dynamics to find conditions under which a fruit abortion strategy based on regulating the pollinator population could feasibly evolve in this type of plant-pollinator interaction.  相似文献

In the icosahedral (T = 4) Semliki Forest virus, the envelope protomers, i.e. E1-E2 heterodimers, make one-to-one interactions with capsid proteins below the viral lipid bilayer, transverse the membrane and form an external glycoprotein shell with projections. The shell is organized by protomer domains interacting as hexamers and pentamers around shell openings at icosahedral 2- and 5-fold axes, respectively, and the projections by other domains associating as trimers at 3- and quasi 3-fold axes. We show here, using cryo- electron microscopy, that low pH, as occurs in the endosomes during virus uptake, results in the relaxation of protomer interactions around the 2- and the 5-fold axes in the shell, and movement of protomers towards 3- and quasi 3-fold axes in a way that reciprocally relocates their putative E1 and E2 domains. This seemed to be facilitated by a trimerization of transmembrane segments at the same axes. The alterations observed help to explain several key features of the spike-mediated membrane fusion reaction, including shell dissolution, heterodimer dissociation, fusion peptide exposure and E1 homotrimerization.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine characteristics of the extracellular enzyme activity of Kytococcus sedentarius on human callus. METHODS AND RESULTS: A concentrate of a continuous culture supernatant fluid of K. sedentarius, which had callus-degrading activity, was subjected to a series of chromatographic purification procedures. The enzyme activity was found to be attributable to two proteases. These were capable of degrading both native callus and extracted keratin polypeptides and were purified to homogeneity, as shown by SDS-PAGE with silver staining. The enzymes P1 and P2 were 30 kDa and 50 kDa in size with isoelectric points of 4.6 and 2.7, respectively. The optimum conditions for callus-degrading activity were 40 degrees C, pH 7.1 for P1 and 50 degrees C, pH 7.5 for P2. P2 displayed increased activity in the presence of 800 mmol l(-1) NaCl and both enzymes were inhibited by PMSF (1 mmol(-1) Phenylmethylsulphoryl fluoride) and 1 mmol l(-1) EDTA. The main enzyme cleavage sites were Lys-Trp, Val-Lys, Gly-Asp and Asp-Arg, as determined after incubation of P1 and P2 with the beta-chain of insulin. CONCLUSIONS: K. sedentarius produces two extracellular enzymes that independently degrade natural, insoluble human callus. Both enzymes are serine proteases and have cleavage preference sites that are present in a range of human keratins. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The identification, in K. sedentarius cultures, of two enzymes which can degrade human callus strengthens the hypothesis that this organism is responsible for the pitting in human epidermis observed in pitted keratolysis. These enzymes may be of commercial use in the biodegradation of a range of keratin polymers, biological washing powders and in the treatment of unwanted callus on human skin.  相似文献

A versatile visual approach for detecting recombination and identifying recombination breakpoints within a sequence alignment is presented. The method is based on two novel diagrams - the highway plot and the occupancy plot - that graphically portray phylogenetic inhomogeneity along an alignment, and can be viewed as a synthesis of two widely used but unrelated methods: bootscanning and quartet-mapping. To illustrate the method, simulated data and HIV-1 and influenza A datasets are investigated.  相似文献
