Different Spanish unifloral honeys (eucalyptus, sunflower, rosemary, thyme, lavender, citrus, anise, quercus, and lemon blossom) and one multifloral honey were studied by Free-Choice Profiling (FCP) analysis. Generalized Procrustes Analysis (GPA) applied to the FCP data allowed discrimination between samples and provided information on the attributes responsible for the differences observed. The honeys had significantly different sensory characteristics. Textural attributes were the predominant factor in discriminating between samples, and appearance (color included) was also correlated with GPA dimensions to a lesser extent.  相似文献

In the southern Iberian Peninsula, Rhododendron ponticum occurs in restricted and vulnerable populations as a Tertiary relict. Population structure and the main phases of the reproductive process were examined in order to shed light on recruitment patterns and limitations. Rhododendron ponticum flowers are self-compatible and attract a diverse array of insects, which are responsible for a considerable number of seeds set in the populations. Nevertheless, only adults form populations, whilst seedlings are scarce and saplings virtually absent (only two juveniles out of 2489 adults sampled). Non-specialized vegetative multiplication by layering was observed. Recruitment failure seems to depend on the scarcity of safe microsites, which are free from drought, for seedling establishment. The observations contrast with R. ponticum 's reputation as an aggressive invader in temperate Atlantic areas. It is proposed that the species shows a variable balance between sexual reproduction and vegetative multiplication depending on environmental conditions. At present, only the latter seems to be prevailing in relict populations in the Iberian Peninsula. Glucagon and its receptors have been identified within the mammalian brain, and their anatomical distribution correlates well with the distribution of opioid peptides and their receptors. To evaluate possible physiological interactions between these two peptidergic systems, we examined the effects of glucagon on two opioid responses - bradycardia and antinociception. Glucagon administered either intravenously (iv) (100-1000 micrograms/kg) or intracerebroventricularly (icv) (5 micrograms) significantly attenuated morphine-induced (200 micrograms/kg, iv) bradycardia without producing any alterations in cardiovascular parameters when given alone. Furthermore, glucagon did not antagonize the bradycardia produced by phenyldiguanide (10 micrograms/kg, iv), a non-opioid substance. Peripheral (1 mg/kg, iv) and central (5 micrograms, icv) glucagon pretreatment antagonized morphine-induced (7.5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) antinociception by 67% and 86%, respectively, at 30 minutes (as determined by the hot plate test). Glucagon treatment alone at these doses did not alter baseline response latencies. In both cases, central injections of glucagon were more effective than iv injections in antagonizing morphine's effects. These findings demonstrate a central action for glucagon and provide the first evidence that this neuropeptide may function as an endogenous antagonist of opioid actions.  相似文献

Transgenic cotton plants from several independently-transformed lines expressing a chimeric gene encoding a chloroplast-targeted Mn superoxide dismutase (SOD) from tobacco exhibit a three-fold increase in the total leaf SOD activity, strong Mn SOD activity associated with isolated chloroplasts, and a 30% and 20% increase in ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase activities, respectively. The Mn SOD plants did exhibit a slightly enhanced protection against light-mediated, paraquat-induced cellular damage but only at 0.3 µM paraquat. In addition, photosynthetic rates at 10°C and 15°C were similar to those of controls, and the immediate recovery of photosynthesis after a 35-min exposure to 5°C and full sun was only slightly better than that for wild-type plants. The recovery for longer exposure times was comparable for both genotypes as was the deactivation of the H2O2-sensitive, Calvin-cycle enzyme, stromal fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase). Compared to the controls, Mn SOD plant leaves in full sun prior to chilling stress had a lower activation of FBPase, a higher ratio of oxidized to reduced forms of ascorbate, and a higher total glutathione content. After 35 min at 5°C in full sunlight, total glutathione had risen in control leaves to 88% of the Mn SOD plant values, and oxidized to reduced ascorbate ratios were higher for both genotypes. However, an 80% increase in the ratio of oxidized to reduced glutathione occurred for Mn SOD plant leaves with no change for controls. This increased demand on the ascorbate-glutathione cycle is circumstantial evidence that high Mn SOD activity in the chloroplast leads to increased H2O2 pools that could, in some manner, affect photosynthetic recovery after a stress period. We postulate that the pool sizes of reduced ascorbate and glutathione may restrict the ability of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle to compensate for the increased activity of SOD in cotton over-producing mitochondrial Mn SOD in chloroplasts during short-term chilling/high light stress.  相似文献

The role of external Ca2+ in the homeostasis of intracellular pH (pHi) of Anabaena sp. strain PCC7120 in response to a decrease in the external pH (pHex) has been studied in cell suspensions. Increase in cytoplasmic pH after acid shock is dependent on the presence of Ca2+ in the medium. The observed Ca2+-mediated alkalization of the cytoplasm depends on the extent of the shift in external pH. Acid pH shifts resulted in an increased permeability of the cytoplasmic membrane to protons, which could be reversed by increasing the concentration of Ca2+ in the medium. Thus, the ability of Ca2+ to increase cytoplasmic pH might be correlated with an inhibition of net proton uptake by increasing concentrations of external Ca2+ under these conditions. This combined response resulted in the generation and maintenance of a larger pH gradient (ΔpH) at acid external pH values. All Ca2+ channel blockers tested, such as verapamil and LaCl3, inhibited the observed Ca2+-mediated response. On the other hand, the Ca ionophore calcimycin (compound A23187) was agonistic, and stimulated both cytoplasmic alkalization and inhibition of net proton uptake. The protonophorous uncoupler carbonylcyanide m -chlorophenyl hydrazone, inhibited this Ca2+-mediated response, whereas monensin, an inhibitor of the Na+/H+ antiporter, had no significant effect. The results of the present study suggest that an influx of Ca2+ from the extracellular space is required for the regulation of cytoplasmic pH in Anabaena sp. strain PCC7120 exposed to low external pH values.  相似文献

The microbial population dynamics on apples cv. Golden Delicious were analysed every 15 days between bud and harvest in a fully replicated experiment in northern Spain in 1994 and 1995. The total microbial populations varied with developmental stage, and with prevailing climatic conditions. The predominant mycroflora were the filamentous fungi Cladosporium and Alternaria spp. and white and pink yeasts. Other genera isolated included mainly species of Epicoccum, Fusarium and Acremonium. However, the most important post-harvest pathogens Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea were seldom isolated from ripening apples. Maximum total filamentous fungal populations occurred after fruit set and during early ripening [2 × 104cfu (colony-forming units) g-1 approximately] while those of bacteria were maximum at bud stage (3.5 × 105and 3.0 × 104 cfu g-1 in 1994 and 1995 respectively). White yeasts were more numerous than pink yeasts. Endophytic infection of apple buds by Alternaria spp., responsible for core rot, was found in almost all bud tissue. By contrast, Cladosporium spp. were initially isolated later from 12.5–50% of tissue samples during blooming and fruit set. The impact of a four-spray fungicide regime during apple development significantly decreased the total filamentous fungal populations in both years, and that of Cladosporium spp. in 1994. However, bacterial populations were often higher on apples from fungicide-treated plots. Fungicide sprays decreased populations of Cladosporium, Alternaria and white yeasts for a maximum of up to 15–30 days after application. Fungicide application had little effect on endophytic infection of apples by Alternaria spp. between bud and harvest.  相似文献
