Both attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia are suggested to co-occur with altered fatty acid (FA) metabolism, but it is unknown how FAs are associated with the cognitive domains that characterize these disorders. In the project DyAdd, we investigated the associations between FAs in serum phospholipids and phonological processing, reading, spelling, arithmetic, executive functions, and attention. Healthy controls (n=36), adults with ADHD (n=26), dyslexia (n=36), or both (n=9) were included in the study. FAs included saturated, monounsaturated, total polyunsaturated, n-3, and n-6 FAs, together with n-6/n-3, AA/EPA, and LA/ALA ratios. When all the study subjects were included in the analyses, especially polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) were positively associated with cognition, but reading was least associated with FAs. These associations were modulated by gender, intelligence, n-3 PUFA intake, and group. Accordingly, within the ADHD group, only few associations emerged with PUFAs, n-6 PUFAs, and cognitive domains, whereas in the dyslexia group the more prevalent associations appeared with PUFAs and n-3 PUFAs.  相似文献

The side effects of 5 insecticides, 8 fungicides and 6 herbicides on 24 species of beneficial organisms were tested by members of the Working Group «Pesticides and Beneficial Organisms» of the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC), West Palaearctic Regional Section (WPRS). The tests were conducted by 24 members in 11 countries according to internationally approved guidelines. The insecticide buprofezin (Applaud), the fungicides triforine (Saprol), procymidone (Sumisclex), anilazine (Dyrene), triadimenol (Bayfidan), hexaconazole (Anvil), tridemorph (Calixin) and the herbicides tralkoxydim (Grasp), bentazone (Basagran) were harmless to nearly all the beneficial organisms. Diflubenzuron (Dimilin) affected spiders and the larvae of predatory insects. The remaining 10 preparations were more toxic and should therefore be further tested in semi-field and field experiment on relevant organisms.  相似文献

A mathematical model of heat loss from an aquatic animal to the surrounding water is presented. Heat is generated in metabolically active tissues and distributed by circulating blood and by conduction. The time dependent radial temperature profile of the animal is numerically solved from heat transfer equations by a computer. The model is applied to large whales, porpoises, and seals. For the whales, blood circulation to the dermal layer below appendage and body skin surfaces proved to be essential for sufficient heat dissipation. When decreasing the blood flow below a certain value (dependent on sea temperature and whale activity) the large whales would overheat. Blubber thickness was found to be of minor importance in whale thermoregulation, because the blubber coat can be bypassed by blood circulation. On the other hand, it is in general not possible for small porpoises and seals to stay warm in the coldest waters using normal mammalian resting metabolic rates, even if the peripheral circulation is shut off (or artery-vein heat exchangers used). Heat loss can be reduced if the outermost tissue layers are allowed to cool. This is achieved by minimizing convective radial heat flow via the circulation. (For large whales even minute radial blood flow raises the muscle temperatures to the core temperature level.) Seasonal acclimatization of harbour seals is explained by changes in their effective insulation thickness. Differences in whale activity induce changes in the temperature profile mainly within the first few centimeters from the skin surface. These superficial temperatures, if known, could be used to estimate whale metabolic rates. Since they drop close to the sea water temperature within minutes after whale death, the measurements should be done of live whales.  相似文献

High overwintering mortality was recorded forMeligethes aeneus in the field in Finland, ranging from 85 to 98% depending on the source of the overwintering population. The main factor explaining, variation in survival was the body weight of the beetles in the autumn: only the heaviest beetles survived. Body weight, on the other hand, was influenced by treatment of the rape field soil withBeauveria bassiana, resulting in a 50% decrease in winter survival compared with the reference. The soil treatment did not appear to have direct mortality effects (pathogenesis) on the beetle neither in the summer nor in the winter, and there was no apparent effect on survival of crowding of the insects at the overwintering site. Density dependence in overwintering survival ofM. aeneus may function through the availability of pollen food in the autumn, and intraspecific competition for it. Treatment of the rape field soil withB. bassiana may be a feasible way to increase, the winter mortality and to lower the pollen beetle populations, but requires further research.  相似文献

Results are presented from a fertilization experiment with wood bark ash (0, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 Mg ha-1) applied to prevent and cure visible nutrient disorders of young Scots pine established on a peatland field. 13 years after fertilization, dieback of trees and other symptoms of nutrient disorders were substantially reduced or even eliminated, especially where higher doses had been applied. The volume of the growing stock was more than 70 m3 ha-1 for the highest dose while control plots produced less than 15 m3 ha-1. Vegetation characteristics changed following ash treatments with high ash doses favouring grasses and low ash doses promoting mosses. Some major changes in soil and foliar nutrient concentrations were evident due to ash fertilization. K and B, however, were clearly the most limiting nutrients that could be cycled where high doses of ash were used. This was particularly the case with a dose of 20 Mg ha-1. Decomposition of the topsoil was at its highest on plots with ash doses of 5 and 10 Mg ha-1 ash and at its lowest when the dose was 2 Mg ha-1. This was partly due to differences in the C/N ratio of the soil. All decomposition parameters indicated a high degree of humification in the topsoil. High N content (of organic material), low C/N in the soil and optimum levels of foliar N concentrations suggested sufficient N mineralization for tree growth to have occurred in the soil.  相似文献

Production of extracellular siderophores is typical for many plant-associated microbes, both mutualistic and antagonistic. Various strains of mycorrhizal fungi produce siderophores, and siderophore production by pathogenic fungi is typically associated with virulence. We analyzed extracellular siderophore production along with production of antibacterial and antioxidant compounds in foliar endophytic fungi of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Labrador tea (Rhododendron tomentosum Harmaja). The siderophore produced in vitro was ferricrocin, quantities ranging between 7.9 and 17.6 μg/l. Only the fungi with antibacterial activity produced ferricrocin and any well-known siderophores were not detected in the broths of antioxidant-producing fungi. Therefore, production of ferricrocin is typical for some, but not all foliar endophytic fungi. Ferricrocin was detected in the leaves of Labrador tea, which suggests that ferricrocin may play a role in vivo in the interaction between the endophyte and plant host.  相似文献

The persistence and penetration into soilof surface-applied unformulated conidia of twoisolates of Metarhizium anisopliae and one of Beauveria bassiana at sites with clay, peat andtwo kinds of sand as their soil types and at depthsof from 0 to 20 cm was studied in 1988–1991 underconditions characterized by permanent snow cover andfrozen soil in the winter time. At 0–5 cm depth, M. anisopliae persisted throughout the experiment atall sites, clay being the most and peat the leastfavourable soil for persistence. Clay and one of thesandy soils were the least and peat the most conducivesoil to penetration of M. anisopliae from thesurface to deeper soil layers and persistence therein.Differences in persistence were evident between thetwo M. anisopliae isolates in the sandy and peatsites, but not in the clay site. Three yearspostapplication there were still enough infectiouspropagules of M. anisopliae in soil of allsites to infect over 80% of the Tenebriomolitor larvae used as baits in samples taken fromthe cylinders of all soils. All the augmentedpropagules of B. bassiana disappeared duringthe first winter after application in clay and one ofthe two sandy sites, but some persistence one yearpostinoculation was evident at 0–5 depth in one ofthe sand soils and at 0–5 and 5–10 cm depths in peat.  相似文献
