Phenylhydrazine treatment produced an expansion of spleen CFU (10 x N) and an even greater expansion of spleen ACFU (40 x N). Blood CFU and ACFU levels also increased. While marrow CFU did not change marrow ACFU showed a pronounced drop. The ratio of ACFU/CFU varied between tissues, it was highest in marrow and lowest in peripheral blood. The changes in CFU, ACFU and blood granulocytes are discussed in relation to the radioprotective action of phenylhydrazine pretreatment of mice. 相似文献

Teichoic acid-associated N-acetylglucosamine and rhamnose have been shown to serve as phage receptors in Listeria monocytogenes serotype 1/2a. We generated and characterized two single-copy Tn916DeltaE mutants which were resistant to phage A118 and several other serotype 1/2a-specific phages. In one mutant the insertion was immediately upstream of the recently identified ptsHI locus, which encodes two proteins of the phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent carbohydrate uptake system, whereas in the other the insertion was immediately upstream of an operon whose most distal gene was clpC, involved in stress responses and virulence. Transduction experiments confirmed the association of the phage-resistant phenotype of these mutants with the transposon insertion. Phage A118 resistance of the mutants could be attributed to inability of the phage to adsorb onto the mutant cells, and biochemical analysis of cell wall composition showed that the teichoic acids of both mutants were deficient in N-acetylglucosamine. The rates of school injuries were examined by means of a prospective study of 212 schools during the 1981-82 school year. The results showed an annual incidence rate of 5.4 injury events/100 children, which appears to be an underestimate of the actual rate. Of all the injury events 28.7% resulted in serious injuries. Injuries were significantly more frequent in the elementary as opposed to the secondary schools, and the boys were injured significantly more often than the girls. Most of the injuries occurred during athletic activities. Most of the children with either serious or minor injuries were sent to the school office or returned to the classroom, which indicates that the present level of first-aid training among school personnel is inadequate. 相似文献

Specific gene probes were used to study restriction fragment length polymorphisms of the human alpha 1-antitrypsin gene. A polymorphism due to loss of a recognition site for the restriction enzyme Taq I was identified in eight of 42 patients with bronchiectasis and nine of 49 patients with pulmonary emphysema, none of whom had alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency. Among a control group without lung disease the polymorphism was significantly less frequent, being found in only five of 101 apparently healthy blood donors. The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) polymorphism was also present in two of 14 unrelated patients with alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency, indicating a lack of association with any specific alpha 1-antitrypsin protein phenotype. The polymorphism identified in this study may be a new marker for genetic predisposition to chronic lung disease. 相似文献

Pastoral fallowing over a growing season (October–May) has a profound effect on standing biomass and sward structure, and should have an impact on below ground plant growth and soil biological activities. Two field studies were conducted to compare the effects of pastoral fallow with rotational grazing on root growth and soil physical and chemical properties. Root growth and distribution was altered by pastoral fallowing and there was significantly (P < 0.01) less root biomass at 0–50 mm depth of soil in the fallowed sward than the grazed sward. Compared with the grazed treatment, pastoral fallow increased soil air permeability at 500 mm tension by 38%, saturated hydraulic conductivity by 26%, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity at 20 mm tension by 67% and soil moisture by 10–15%, and reduced soil bulk density by 11%. Fallowing had little effect on soil nutrients both at the end of fallowing, except for small reductions in K and Mineral N levels at 0–75 mm soil depth, and two to three years after fallowing. 相似文献
