CYCLIC adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) has been established as a mediator of various hormonal effects in the appropriate target cells1. Adenyl cyclase converts adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic AMP and is widely distributed in the membrane of mammalian nucleated cells2–4. Since the early process of phagocytosis involves the physical and chemical contact of the cell membrane to the objects and subsequent formation of phagosome, we postulated that one of the earliest biochemical changes during phagocytosis might be an activation of adenyl cyclase and an alteration of concentrations of cyclic AMP in the phagocytes.  相似文献

The present study aimed to understand how a parasite with a complex life cycle selects a given host succession when several potential hosts are present. Ligula intestinalis (Cestoda, Pseudophyllidea) was considered, which presents a life cycle with three hosts: copepod, fish, and piscivorous bird. Encounter probability between each pair of hosts was calculated for Lavernose-Lacasse gravel pit (France) using a sum of the product of the host abundances over time. Among four potential copepod hosts, two potential fish hosts, and six potential bird hosts, the results demonstrate that the copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis , the roach ( Rutilus rutilus ), and the great crested grebe ( Podiceps cristatus ) had a maximal encounter probability due to their abundance, but also due to the similarities of the temporal dynamics of their life cycles. These results agree with previous experiments and field work identifying a high specificity of L. intestinalis to E. gracilis , R. rutilus , and P. cristatus in the study site. This suggests that the abundance of potential hosts and the temporal dynamics of their life cycles act together to determine encounter rates between hosts and parasites, and thus could constitute a crucial determinant in local host selection by parasites with a complex life cycle.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 89 , 99–106.  相似文献

Leaves of twelve C3 species and six C4 species were examined to understand better the relationship between mesophyll cell properties and the generally high photosynthetic rates of these plants. The CO2 diffusion conductance expressed per unit mesophyll cell surface area (gCO2cell) cell was determined using measurements of the net rate of CO2 uptake, water vapor conductance, and the ratio of mesophyll cell surface area to leaf surface area (Ames/A). Ames/A averaged 31 for the C3 species and 16 for the C4 species. For the C3 species gCO2cell ranged from 0.12 to 0.32 mm s-1, and for the C4 species it ranged from 0.55 to 1.5 mm s-1, exceeding a previously predicted maximum of 0.5 mm s-1. Although the C3 species Cammissonia claviformis did not have the highest gCO2cell, the combination of the highest Ames and highest stomatal conductance resulted in this species having the greatest maximum rate of CO2 uptake in low oxygen, 93 μmol m-2 s-1 (147 mg dm-2 h-1). The high gCO2cell of the C4 species Amaranthus retroflexus (1.5 mm s-1) was in part attributable to its thin cell wall (72 nm thick).  相似文献

Ten novel microsatellite loci were isolated from giant scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis, and the polymorphisms were examined to estimate genetic variability. The genetic variabilities varied depending on the locus. The number of alleles ranged from two to 17, and the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.17 to 0.99 and 0.33 to 0.90, respectively. Six loci showed significant Hardy–Weinberg disequilibrium. The high variabilities revealed in this study suggest that microsatellites should prove useful for various genetic investigations.  相似文献

Daily and seasonal patterns in water flow and water potentialwere investigated for the Crassulacean acid metabolism succulentAgave deserti during an extended summer drought and for a periodfollowing rainfall. Field measurements of transpiration andof osmotic pressure changes over selected 24 h periods wereused as input variables for a computer model of water flow thatwas based on an electrical circuit analog of the whole plant.Parameters such as root resistance and tissue capacitance werealso varied to reflect the effects of changing plant or soilwater status. The model predicted internal water flow and waterpotential during the drought cycle and was used to assess therole of tissue osmotic properties in water uptake from the soiland in internal water redistribution. For plants under wet soil conditions, 55% of the night-timetranspiration was derived from water storage, this storage beingrecharged during the day. As drought progressed, transpirationand the nocturnal increase in osmotic pressure declined, althoughthe osmotic pressure itself increased. The difference in osmoticpressure between the water storage tissue and the chlorenchymacaused a net flow of water into the chlorenchyma after 3 weeksof drought, thereby increasing chlorenchyma turgor pressure.Simulations also indicated that a large increase in root resistancemust occur to prevent substantial water loss from the plantto the dry soil. After rainfall, recharge of plant water storagewas complete within one week, although full recovery in theamplitude of daily osmotic pressure variations took longer. Impacts of birds of prey on gamebirds in the UK: a review   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The influence of predators on the distribution, density and dynamics of their prey species has long been of interest to ecologists and wildlife managers. Where the prey population is also utilized by humans, conflicts may arise through competition for a limited resource. Because gamebird shooting in the UK provides employment, recreation and income, the impact of birds of prey on gamebird populations has been the subject of intense debate for many years. Various approaches have been used to assess the impacts that raptors have on gamebird populations. Here we review the applicability and limitations of the methods used and assess the scientific evidence for population-level and economic impacts of raptors on gamebird populations in the UK. Raptors may, in some situations, take large numbers of gamebirds and may be an important proximate cause of mortality, although few studies have addressed the impacts of raptors on either breeding or pre-shooting densities. Two exceptions are studies of Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus , Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus predation on Red Grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus on moorland in Scotland and Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus predation on Grey Partridge Perdix perdix on farmland in England. Both these studies suggested that raptors could have population-level impacts when their gamebird prey was already at low density. Studies on predation of captively bred gamebirds suggest that numbers taken by raptors at release pens vary considerably and in a few cases raptors have been documented killing relatively large numbers. On the whole, however, it appears that raptors account for a relatively small proportion of mortality among released birds and the impact on subsequent shooting bags is unknown. We summarize important gaps in current knowledge and recommend specific areas for future research.  相似文献

In Daucus carota L. (Apiaceae) the florets comprising the central umbellet of inflorescences are usually pink or dark purple, presenting a marked contrast to the surrounding umbellets, which are generally white. The number of dark florets varies, and some inflorescences have no dark florets. It has been proposed that the dark florets function as an insect mimic, and in so doing serve to attract insects to the flower. In contrast, other authors, Darwin included, suggest that they are functionally redundant. The present study examined whether the dark florets attract insects, and also whether this effect can be replicated by replacing these florets with an insect. At the study site in Portugal the predominant insect visitor was the beetle Anthrenus verbasci L. (Dermestidae), which is similar in size and shape to the dark florets. Large inflorescences and those with more dark florets attracted more beetles than small inflorescences and those with fewer or no dark florets. Inflorescences with the dark florets removed attracted fewer beetles visitors compared with intact inflorescences. Inflorescences in which the dark florets were replaced with one or a cluster of five dead, freeze-killed A. verbasci attracted more beetles than inflorescences from which the dark florets had been removed. Replacement of the dark florets with a relatively large Meloid beetle resulted in the attraction of markedly fewer A. verbasci . We conclude that the dark florets can act as an insect attractant for some insect groups by acting as an insect mimic, and that they are adaptive, in contrast to the speculations of Darwin.  相似文献
