Several studies suggest that season of birth differentially affects the physiological characteristics of humans. Those living at relatively high latitude, such as Canada, Spain, and Italy (44°N-45°N), and born in the fall tended to be "morning-type" persons in comparison to those born in other seasons. There are relatively little data on the affect of season of birth on people residing at low latitude. Here the authors show that at low latitude, Kochi, Japan (33°N), the effect of season of birth on the morningness chronotype is confined to young children aged 1-12 yrs, disappearing in elderly persons. Only female participants aged 2-12 yrs born in the fall, especially in November, were significantly morning-typed (p < .001) in comparison to those born in the other seasons, whereas there were no such significant season-of-birth differences in morningness-eveningness preference among male participants. Moreover, both female and male participants aged 13-25 yrs showed no significant seasonal differences in morningness-eveningness preference. The small effects detected in this study might be due to smaller seasonal change in day length at the relatively lower latitude of Kochi.  相似文献

Cytoglobin (Cgb) is a vertebrate heme‐containing globin‐protein expressed in a broad range of mammalian tissues. Unlike myoglobin, Cgb displays a hexa‐coordinated (bis‐hystidyl) heme iron atom, having the heme distal His81(E7) residue as the endogenous sixth ligand. In the present study, we crystallized human Cgb in the presence of a reductant Na2S2O4 under a carbon monoxide (CO) atmosphere, and determined the crystal structure at 2.6 Å resolution. The CO ligand occupies the sixth axial position of the heme ferrous iron. Eventually, the imidazole group of His81(E7) is expelled from the sixth position and swings out of the distal heme pocket. The flipping motion of the His81 imidazole group accompanies structural readjustments of some residues (Gln62, Phe63, Gln72, and Ser75) in both the CD‐corner and D‐helix regions of Cgb. On the other hand, no significant structural changes were observed in other Cgb regions, for example, on the proximal side. These structural alterations that occurred as a result of exogenous ligand (CO) binding are clearly different from those observed in other vertebrate hexa‐coordinated globins (mouse neuroglobin, Drosophila melanogaster hemoglobin) and penta‐coordinated sperm whale myoglobin. Autophagy acts as an intrinsic defense system against intracellular bacterial survival. Recently, multiple cellular pathways that target intracellular bacterial pathogens to autophagy have been described. These include the Atg5/LC3 pathway, which targets Shigella, the ubiquitin (Ub)-NDP52-LC3 pathway, which targets Group A Streptococcus (GAS) and Salmonella typhimurium, the Ub-p62-LC3 pathway, which targets Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Listeria monocytogenes and S. typhimurium, and the diacylglycerol-dependent pathway, which targets S. typhimurium. In addition, the bacterial invasion process is targeted by the NOD1 or NOD2-Atg16LLC3 pathway. Bacterial pathogens with an intracytosolic lifestyle, i.e., those capable of inducing actin polymerization and cell-to-cell spreading, also employ diverse tactics to evade autophagic recognition. Thus, Shigella, L. monocytogenes and Burkholderia pseudomallei deploy highly evolved systems to evade autophagic recognition and growth restriction. Here, we briefly review current knowledge of host recognition of L. monocytogenes by the innate immune system, and highlight how autophagic recognition by the host is overcome by bacterial countermeasures.  相似文献

To evaluate the effects of intraspecific hybridization of local and nonlocal genotypes on growth traits of progeny in Abies sachalinensis, we performed reciprocal crossing between nonlocal trees in a high‐elevation zone (1,100–1,200 m asl) and local trees in a low‐elevation zone (530 m asl) in Hokkaido, northern Japan, in 1979 and established a common garden experiment using local × local (female × male ), local × nonlocal , nonlocal × local , and nonlocal × nonlocal progeny in the low‐elevation zone in 1986. Survival, height, diameter at breast height (dbh), needle nitrogen content, specific leaf area (SLA), and needle area per shoot diameter (NA) of 25‐year‐old progeny were measured in 2005. The survival rate was consistently high (>85% on average). Reductions in height and dbh were apparent in F1 hybrids compared with local × local progeny. Furthermore, outbreeding depression was significant in height growth of nonlocal × local F1 hybrids and in dbh of both F1 hybrids. Reductions in growth traits may be related to morphological needle traits, such as the low values of SLA and NA. Elevation guidelines for A. sachalinensis seed zones are discussed to ensure the long‐term viability of both restored and native populations.  相似文献

Although the intestinal epithelium is equipped with multiple defense systems that sense bacterial components, transmit alarms to the immune system, clear the bacteria, and renew the injured epithelial lining, mucosal bacterial pathogens are capable of efficiently colonizing the intestinal epithelium, because they have evolved systems that modulate the inflammatory and immune responses of the host and exploit the harmful environments as replicative niches. In this review we highlight current topics concerning Shigella's tactics that interfere with the innate immune systems.  相似文献

Cellular incorporation of Cd involves multiple transport systems for other metals such as Fe, Zn, Mn, and Ca. Metal transporters including divalent metal transporter 1, Zrt/Irt-related protein (ZIP) 8, and ZIP14, and certain types of voltage-dependent Ca channels have been shown to be involved in cellular Cd uptake. However, tissue- or cell-specific roles of these metal transporters in the accumulation and toxicity of Cd remains unclear. In the present study, we compared the sensitivity to and accumulation of Cd, Mn, and Zn among four types of rat cell lines. Rat basophilic leukemia RBL-2H3 cells showed the highest sensitivity to Cd and Mn due to the highest accumulation of Cd and Mn among the four cell lines. The high accumulation of Cd and Mn was caused by high uptake rates of Cd and Mn. Since relatively high expression of ZIP8 and ZIP14 was found in RBL-2H3 cells, siRNAs of ZIP8 and ZIP14 were transfected into RBL-2H3 cells. The knockdown of ZIP8, but not of ZIP14, significantly reduced the uptake rates of Cd and Mn in RBL-2H3 cells, especially in the presence of bicarbonate. These results suggest that the high expression of ZIP8, which is known to have affinities for both Cd and Mn, resulted in high accumulation of Cd and Mn, leading to high sensitivity to these metals in RBL-2H3 cells. Thus, RBL-2H3 cells may serve as a good model for clarifying the mechanisms of Cd and Mn transport via ZIP8.  相似文献
