Two cases of within-group infanticide and cannibalism were observed among the M Group chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains,
Tanzania. In both cases, victimized infants were male, 5 – 6 months of age, and in good health when killed. Four to five years
have passed since the mothers of the victims immigrated into M Group as nulliparous immigrants. In one case the 2nd-ranking
male was observed to detach the infant from the mother's belly. Both infants were finally killed by the alpha male after several
adult males scrambled for the bodies. There was no evidence that the mothers had mated with males other than those of M Group.
Nor was there evidence that the mothers had restrictive mating relationships with some of the M Group adult males. What little
evidence is available shows that the mothers had mated mostly with adolescent and other immature males during their conception
cycles. However, at least in one case, the mother began to mate more with adult males rather than with immature males after
the infanticide. It is proposed that the function of within-group male infanticide can be explained by the male-male competition
hypothesis developed for hanuman langurs and other nonhuman primates. 相似文献

The effect of thrombospondin, a major glycoprotein in the platelet alpha-granule, on the erythrocyte aggregation rate was investigated. Venous blood was sampled from 8 healthy male volunteers and anticogulated with 1.1 mg/ml EDTA(K2). The erythrocyte aggregation rate of each blood sample was measured with a whole-blood erythrocyte aggregometer before and after incubation with murine monoclonal antibody against human platelet thrombospondin. After 15 min incubation, the erythrocyte aggregation rate exhibited a significant decrease to 0.055 +/- 0.022/s, representing 71.9 +/- 8.7% of the control value (0.075 +/- 0.028/s) (p less than 0.0005). The results obtained suggest that thrombospondin may participate in the control of erythrocyte aggregability in the circulating blood. 相似文献

An annual average of 163 Kuril seals was found dead in two years in salmon trap nets along the coastal waters of the Nemuro Peninsula and adjacent areas. The seal-caused damage to the total salmon catch at the salmon trap nets was concentrated in some of them, particularly No. 27, where seals killed or injured 5.1% of the catch in 1982, and 1.8% in 1983. Based on the proportion of Kuril seals among the dead seals in the trap nets, it was estimated that Kuril seals damaged 4.7% of the total salmon catch at No. 27 in 1982, and 1.7% in 1983. The enhancement of antitumor activities of the tumoricidal soluble factor (SF) from a streptococcal preparation (OK-432)-activated macrophages by the pretreatment with a protein-bound polysaccharide (PSK) was investigated in tumor-bearing mice.Two-step stimulations with OK-432 atin vivo priming andin vitro eliciting were required for the production of the tumoricidal SF by macrophages, and the tumoricidal activity of the SF apparently correlated with the uptake of OK-432 by macrophages at priming phase.Tumoricidal activity of the SF from OK-432-activated macrophages in proteose-peptone (P-P)-pretreated mice significantly decreased with the development of the tumor, whereas in PSK-pretreated mice did not. Pretreatment of tumor-bearing mice with PSK saved a decrease in the macrophages carrying Iak or asialo GM1 antigens and an increase in wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) receptors. Furthermore, the uptake of OK-432 by macrophages at priming phase was enhanced. The tumoricidal activity of the SF from OK-432-activated macrophages was augmented.Thus, PSK may restore the depressed functions of macrophages, and the combination therapy with PSK and OK-432 may be effective to enhance the production of tumoricidal SF in tumor-bearing mice. 相似文献

Sporamin, the tuberous root storage protein of the sweet potato, which is localized in vacuoles, is synthesized as a prepro-precursor with an N-terminal sequence of amino acids that includes a signal peptide and an additional pro-segment of 16 amino acids. A full-length cDNA for sporamin was placed downstream of the 35 S promoter of cauliflower mosaic virus and introduced into tobacco and sunflower genomes by Ti plasmid-mediated transformation. A polypeptide of nearly the same size as mature sporamin from the sweet potato was detected in transformed calli of tobacco and sunflower, as well as in the leaves, stems, and roots of regenerated, transgenic tobacco plants. Amino acid sequence analysis of the nearly mature-sized form of sporamin from the transformed tobacco cells revealed that it is actually longer by three amino acids at its N terminus than authentic sporamin purified from the sweet potato. By pulse labeling of suspension-cultured tobacco cells with [35S]methionine, the pro-form of the precursor to sporamin, but not the prepro-precursor, was detected. The 35S-labeled proform was chased to the nearly mature-sized form via an intermediate form which is slightly larger than the nearly mature-sized form. Analysis by Edman degradation of the intermediate form that was labeled in vivo with [3H]histidine suggested that it is longer by two amino acids at its N terminus than the nearly mature-sized form of sporamin. These results suggest that at least two steps of posttranslational processing of the pro-form occurs sequentially in tobacco cells. The posttranslational processing of the pro-form of the precursor to sporamin was inhibited by monensin, suggesting that this step takes place in the acidic compartment, probably in the vacuole. All of the sporamin polypeptides synthesized in transformed tobacco cells were retained inside the cell and sporamin was localized in the vacuole, as judged from results of subcellular fractionation. Native oxymyoglobin (MbO2) was isolated directly from the skeletal muscle of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) with complete separation from metmyoglobin (metMb) on a CM-cellulose column. It was examined for its stability properties over a wide range of pH values (pH 5-12) in 0.1 M buffer at 25 degrees C. When compared with sperm whale MbO2 as a reference, the tuna MbO2 was found to be much more susceptible to autoxidation. Kinetic analysis has revealed that the rate constant for a nucleophilic displacement of O2- from MbO2 by an entering water molecule is 10-times higher than the corresponding value for sperm whale MbO2. The magnitude of the circular dichroism of bigeye tuna myoglobin at 222 nm was comparable to that of sperm whale myoglobin, but its hydropathy profile revealed the region corresponding to the distal side of the heme iron to be apparently less hydrophobic. The kinetic simulation also demonstrated that accessibility of the solvent water molecule to the heme pocket is clearly a key factor in the stability properties of the bound dioxygen. 相似文献

5′-Nucleotidase (EC 3.1.3.5) was solubilized from rod membranes with Ammonyx LO and purified by chromatographic methods. A highly sensitive radioassay was developed. The purified enzyme behaved as a homogeneous protein of 75,000 daltons in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and as a protein of 79,000 in gel filtration. Thus, the enzyme does not contain subunits. The Km values obtained were 1.3 μm for 5′-AMP and 2.3 μm for 5′-GMP. The enzyme was inhibited by concanavalin A, wheat germ agglutinin, and Ricinus communis agglutinin. Rabbit muscle G-actin formed a complex with the enzyme and inhibited its activity. The catalytic site of the enzyme was localized on the internal surface of the disk which, in terms of membrane sidedness, corresponds to the cell surface. A soluble 5′-nucleotidase was extracted from rod membranes with Tris buffer (pH 8.0) containing EGTA in the dark; less enzyme was extracted if the membranes had been exposed to light or incubated with Ca2+. The extracted enzyme was partially purified. The enzyme was unstable and lost 50% of its activity in 3 days at 3 °C. The Km values were 1.3 μm for 5′-AMP and 2.3 μm for 5′-GMP. The enzyme was inhibited by G-actin. A role for the soluble enzyme in the regulation of 5′-GMP in the rod outer segment was suggested. 相似文献

A gas chromatographic method was developed for the determination of monoacetylputrescine, monoacetylcadaverine, N1-acetylspermidine and N5-acetylspermidine in human urine. The amines were isolated from urine by silica gel column chromatography. 1, 10-Diaminodecane was used as internal standard. The amines were reacted with ethyl chloroformate in aqueous medium to four ethyloxycarbonyl derivatives prior to application to gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector. Separation and determination of the derivatives were carried out on a Uniport HP column (1.0 m) impregnated with 0.5% SP-1000 under temperature-programmed conditions. The monoacetylpolyamines could be measured accurately at the nanomole level. The method was used for the determination of the monoacetylpolyamines in urine of healthy volunteers. Abstract: Skeletal muscle cells of newborn rats, cultured in the absence of neuronal influence, were found to contain two types of cell surface acetylcholine receptors as demonstrated by isoelectric focusing. The isoelectric points of the two types of receptors were indistinguishable from those of junctional and extrajunctional types of receptors in mature animals. The cultured cells had two classes of intracellular α-bungarotoxin (αBT) binding components; one had the same sedimentation coefficient as that of surface receptors (9S), and the other had much smaller apparent molecular weights. Only a single major component was detected by isoelectric focusing analysis of the 9s intracellular aBT binding component, with a PI value close to that of the extra junctional receptor. These results suggest that the junctional and extrajunctional types of receptors may be synthesized through a common precursor. 相似文献
