Abstract.  1. Two experiments were performed in the laboratory to assess the behaviour of dropping from a host plant as a defence against intraguild predation in aphidophagous ladybird larvae.
2. In the first experiment, encounters were observed on bean plants between fourth instars of the intraguild predator species, Harmonia axyridis , and first instars of two other ladybird species, Adalia bipunctata (L.) and Coccinella septempunctata (L.). The percentages of first instars of the latter two species that dropped from the plant in response to attack differed dramatically, with 47.5% of C. septempunctata first instars dropping vs. 0% of A. bipunctata .
3. In the second experiment, first instars of A. bipunctata or C. septempunctata and a fourth instar of H. axyridis were allowed to forage together on bean plants for 3 h. During this time, 44.3% of C. septempunctata larvae dropped from the plant, but less than 2% of A. bipunctata larvae did so. In contrast, 95.0% of A. bipunctata larvae fell victim to intraguild predation by H. axyridis vs. only 54.5% of C. septempunctata larvae.
4. The significance of dropping behaviour of ladybird larvae as a defence against intraguild predation, and the relationship of dropping behaviour to species-specific habitat affinity of ladybirds, is discussed.  相似文献

A high-performance liquid chromatographic method with diode array detection was developed to simultaneously separate tetracycline antibiotics and applied to the analysis of discolored teeth. By a reversed-phase ion-pair chromatographic system using pentanesulfonate as a counter ion, minocycline, oxytetracycline, tetracycline and demeclocycline were eluted in this order, and they showed base-line separation within 9 min. When using oxytetracycline as an internal standard, the quantitative ranges were between 2.5 ng/ml and 7.5 μg/ml. Powdered dentine (10 mg) and enamel (40 mg) prepared from discolored primary teeth were sonicated in 0.25 ml of 10 mM HCl containing oxytetracycline (0.75 μg/ml) and 50 mM EDTA-2Na, thereafter the supernatants were chromatographed. Eluates from both discolored tooth samples were identified as minocycline based on diode array spectra of their peaks, while minocycline was not detected in any samples from nondiscolored normal teeth, indicating that discoloration of the tested teeth was due to minocycline incorporated into dentine and enamel. Replicate quantitative analyses of the identical tooth substances showed that intra- and inter-assay C.V.s were 2.63 and 4.95% for dentine, and 5.42 and 10.88% for enamel. Application of the developed method to nine discolored teeth revealed that the incorporated minocycline ranged from 20.13 to 84.62 ng/mg of dentine and 0.89 to 7.87 ng/mg of enamel.  相似文献

We investigated the evolution of transmembrane (TM) topology by detecting partial sequence repeats in TM protein sequences and analyzing them in detail. A total of 377 sequences that seem to have evolved by internal gene duplication events were found among 38,124 predicted TM protein sequences (except for single-spannings) from 87 prokaryotic genomes. Various types of internal duplication patterns were identified in these sequences. The majority of them are diploid-type (including quasi-diploid-type) duplication in which a primordial protein sequence was duplicated internally to become an extant TM protein with twice as many TM segments as the primordial one, and the remaining ones are partial duplications including triploid-type. The diploid-type repeats are recognized in many 8-tms, 10-tms and 12-tms TM protein sequences, suggesting the diploid-type duplication was a principle mechanism in the evolutionary development of these types of TM proteins. The "positive-inside" rule is satisfied in whole sequences of both 10-tms and 8-tms TM proteins and in both halves of 10-tms proteins while not necessarily in the second half of 8-tms proteins, providing fit examples of "internal divergent topology evolution" likely occurred after a diploid-type internal duplication event. From analyzing the partial duplication patterns, several evolutionary pathways were recognized for 6-tms TM proteins, i.e. from primordial 2-tms, 3-tms and 4-tms TM proteins to extant 6-tms proteins. Similarly, the duplication pattern analysis revealed plausible evolution scenarios that 7-tms TM proteins have arisen from 3-tms, 4-tms and 5-tms TM protein precursors via partial internal gene duplications.  相似文献

Recently, it has been reported that prokaryotes also have a mitotic-like apparatus in which polymerized fibres govern the bipolar movement of chromosomes and plasmids. Here, we show evidence that a non-mitotic-like apparatus that does not form polymerized filaments carries out plasmid partitioning. P1 ParA, which is a DNA-binding ATPase protein, was found to be distributed through the whole nucleoid and formed a dense spot at the centre of the nucleoid. The fluorescent intensity of the ParA spot blinked, and then the spot gradually migrated from the midcell to a cell quarter position. Such distribution was not observed in anucleate cells, suggesting that the nucleoid could be a matrix for gradual distribution of ParA. Plasmid DNA constantly colocalized at the spot of ParA and migrated according to spot migration and separation. Thus, the gradient distribution of ParA determines the destination of partitioning plasmids and may direct plasmids to the cell quarters.  相似文献
