doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00563.x Influence of dental treatment on physical performance in community‐dwelling elderly persons Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of dental treatment on physical performance (muscle strength and balance function) among the elderly. Background: Oral conditions have been associated with physical performance. We hypothesised that improved oral conditions by dental treatment would lead to improved physical performance. Methods: A total of 154 persons aged 65 years or over were judged to be in need of dental treatment as a result of dental examination; of these, 121 persons underwent dental treatment. After 1 year, differences in each parameter of physical performance before and after the intervention were evaluated using the Wilcoxon signed rank sum test. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient was calculated to examine correlations between changes in self‐assessed masticatory ability (masticatory ability) and each parameter of physical performance, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed using changes in each parameter of physical performance as the dependent variable and changes in masticatory ability as the principal independent variable. Results: Improved physical performance was not observed for the total study population with dental treatment; however, in subjects with improved masticatory ability, one‐leg standing times with eyes open increased significantly. A significant correlation was established between changes in masticatory ability and each parameter of physical performance. These relationships were not found in those without dental treatment. A significant relationship was also established for one‐leg standing time after adjusting for age, gender, dentition status and needs of dental treatments. Conclusion: Chewing ability may be a positive contributing factor to balance function among the elderly. 相似文献

The fluorescence spectra and fluorescence lifetimes due to tryptophan residues in HbA, Hb Chesapeake, NES-des-Arg Hb and Hb Kempsey were determined at room temperature. The fluorescence intensity and apparent fluorescence lifetimes decrease when the deoxy or T structure in HbA changes to the oxy or R structure, while no significant difference was observed in Hb Kempsey. The difference of fluorescence behavior was ascribed to the quaternary conformational transition of T- and R-states. 相似文献

Etoposide is a specific inhibitor of topoisomerase II, which is an enzyme that enables double-stranded DNA to pass through another double-stranded DNA. Topoisomerase II is a major constituent of chromosome scaffold, existing at appreciable amounts in cells. To examine the effects of etoposide on the cell cycle, hexaploid H1 (ES) cells (6H1 cells) were used with diploid H1 (ES) cells (2H1 cells) as a control. Exponentially growing 2H1 and 6H1 cells were exposed to etoposide at various concentrations, and cultured for about 60 days in L15F10 medium with leukemia inhibitory factor. With a high concentration of etoposide (1 μM), the DNA histograms showed G(2)/M accumulation, suggesting that etoposide arrested the cell cycle at the G(2)/M phase. With a low concentration of etoposide (50 nM), the cell proliferation was suppressed with a doubling time of 98.4 h for 2H1 cells and 51.6 h for 6H1 cells, and without significant alteration in DNA histograms. Time-lapse videography revealed that 6H1 cells survived in the medium containing 50 nM etoposide had a cell cycle time of 18.8 h, which was equivalent to 19.2 h of the doubling time for the 6H1 cell population in drug-free medium, suggesting that a part of the cell population died and was excluded from the cell system. In normal eyes, the amplitude of the b-wave of the photopic ERGs increases during light adaptation, but the mechanism causing this increase has not been fully determined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the contribution of receptoral and post-receptoral components of the retina to this phenomenon. To accomplish this, we examined the ERGs during light adaptation in Pikachurin null-mutant (Pika -/-) mice, which have a misalignment of the bipolar cell dendritic tips to the photoreceptor ribbon synapses. After dark-adaptation, photopic ERGs were recorded from Pika -/- and wild type (WT) mice during the first 9 minutes of light adaptation. In some of the mice, post-receptoral components were blocked pharmacologically. The photopic b-waves of WT mice increased by 50% during the 9 min of light adaptation as previously reported. On the other hand, the b-waves of the Pika -/- mice decreased by 20% during the same time period. After blocking post-receptoral components, the b-waves were abolished from the WT mice, and the ERGs resembled those of the Pika -/- mice. The extracted post-receptoral component increased during light adaptation in the WT mice, but decreased for the first 3 minutes to a plateau in Pika -/- mice. We conclude that the normal synaptic connection between photoreceptor and retinal ON bipolar cells, which is controlled by pikachurin, is required for the ERGs to increase during light-adaptation. The contributions of post-receptoral components are essential for the photopic b-wave increase during the light adaptation. 相似文献

To assess distributional shifts of species in response to recent warming, historical distribution records are the most requisite information. The surface seawater temperature (SST) of Kochi Prefecture, southwestern Japan on the western North Pacific, has significantly risen, being warmed by the Kuroshio Current. Past distributional records of subtidal canopy‐forming seaweeds (Laminariales and Fucales) exist at about 10‐year intervals from the 1970s, along with detailed SST datasets at several sites along Kochi's >700 km coastline. In order to provide a clear picture of distributional shifts of coastal marine organisms in response to warming SST, we observed the present distribution of seaweeds and analyzed the SST datasets to estimate spatiotemporal SST trends in this coastal region. We present a large increase of 0.3°C/decade in the annual mean SST of this area over the past 40 years. Furthermore, a comparison of the previous and present distributions clearly showed the contraction of temperate species' distributional ranges and expansion of tropical species' distributional ranges in the seaweeds. Although the main temperate kelp Ecklonia (Laminariales) had expanded their distribution during periods of cooler SST, they subsequently declined as the SST warmed. Notably, the warmest SST of the 1997–98 El Niño Southern Oscillation event was the most likely cause of a widespread destruction of the kelp populations; no recovery was found even in the present survey at the formerly habitable sites where warm SSTs have been maintained. Temperate Sargassum spp. (Fucales) that dominated widely in the 1970s also declined in accordance with recent warming SSTs. In contrast, the tropical species, S. ilicifolium, has gradually expanded its distribution to become the most conspicuously dominant among the present observations. Thermal gradients, mainly driven by the warming Kuroshio Current, are presented as an explanation for the successive changes in both temperate and tropical species' distributions. 相似文献

Nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat-containing family, pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) has recently emerged as a central regulator of innate immunity and inflammation in response to both sterile inflammatory and microbial invasion signals. Although its ability to drive proteolytic procaspase-1 processing has drawn more attention, NLPR3 can also activate NF-κB. To clarify the physiological relevance of this latter function, we examined the effect of NLRP3 on NF-κB activation and cytokine induction in RNA-interference-based NLRP3-knockdown cell lines generated from the human monocytic cell line THP-1. Knocking down NLRP3 reduced NF-κB activation and cytokine induction in the early stages of Staphylococcus aureus infection. Expression of cytokine genes induced by Staphylococcus aureus was not inhibited by a caspase-1 inhibitor, and did not occur through an autocrine mechanism in response to newly synthesized cytokines. We also demonstrated that NLRP3 could activate NF-κB and induce cytokines in response to sterile signals, monosodium urate crystals and aluminum adjuvant. Thus, NLRP3 mediates NF-κB activation in both sterile and microbially induced inflammation. Our findings show that not only does NLRP3 activate caspase-1 post-translationally, but it also induces multiple cytokine genes in the innate immune system. 相似文献
