Three pairs of raccoon dogsNyctereutes procyonoides (Gray, 1834) were observed by continuous radio-tracking (one 24-h session, once a week) during the first six weeks after parturition. Males spent noticeably more time (40.5% ±11.7 SD) alone with the pups than females (16.4% ±8.5 SD). Females had noticeably larger home ranges (95% kernel: 98.24 ha ±51.71 SD) than males (14.73 ha ±8.16 SD) and moved much longer daily distances (7368 m ±2015 SD) than males (4094 m ±2886 SD) in six weeks postpartum. The raccoon dogs left the breeding den in the 6th week after the birth of the pups.In situ video observation showed that the male carried prey to the den to provide the female and the litter with food. A clear division of labour took place among parents during the period in which the pups were nursed: males guarded the litter in the den or in close vicinity of it, while the females foraged to satisfy their increased energy requirements.  相似文献

Relationships between tree parameters above ground and the biomass of the coarse root system were examined in six mixed spruce-beech stands in the Solling Mountain region in northwest Germany. The selected stands were located on comparable sites and covered an age range of 44 to 114 years. Coarse roots (d?\ge?2 mm) of 42 spruce and 27 beech trees were sampled by excavating the entire root system. A linear model with logarithmic transformation of the variables was developed to describe the relationship between the coarse root biomass (CRB, dry weight) and the corresponding tree diameter at breast height (DBH). The coefficients of determination (R 2) attained values between 0.92 for spruce and 0.94 for beech; the logarithmic standard deviation values were between 0.29 and 0.43. A significantly different effect of tree species on the model estimates could not be detected by an analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA). For spruce, the derived relationships were similar to those reported in previous studies, but not for beech. Biomass partitioning in the tree compartments above and below ground differs significantly between spruce (coarse root/shoot ratio 0.16±0.06) and beech (coarse root/shoot ratio 0.10±0.03) in the mixed stands. These results are similar to those given in other studies involving pure spruce and beech stands on comparable sites in the region, although the ratios of pure stands in other regions growing under different site conditions are somewhat higher. Comparing trees of the same DBH classes, root/shoot ratios of spruce are 1.2 to 3 times higher than those of beech. Dominant spruce trees (DBH>60 cm) attained the highest ratios, suppressed beech trees (DBH<10 cm) the lowest. Site conditions of varying climate and soils and interspecific tree competition are likely to affect root/shoot ratio and DBH-coarse root biomass relationships. The greater variability in beech compared with spruce indicates a high 'plasticity' and adaptability of beech carbon allocation. Thus, the derived equations are useful for biomass estimates of coarse roots involving trees of different ages in mixed stands of spruce and beech in the Solling Mountains. However, application of these relationships to stands in other regions would need further testing.  相似文献

Their main function appears to be defence against pathogens, although some of them have also been implicated in digestion. The crystal structure of the ligand-binding domain of RARbeta, a suspect tumour suppressor, reveals important features that distinguish it from the two other RAR isotypes. The most striking difference is an extra cavity allowing RARbeta to bind more bulky agonists. Accordingly, we identified a ligand that shows RARbeta selectivity with a 100-fold higher affinity to RARbeta than to alpha or gamma isotypes. The structural differences between the three RAR ligand-binding pockets revealed a rationale explaining how a single retinoid can be at the same time an RARalpha, gamma antagonist and an RARbeta agonist. In addition, we demonstrate how to generate an RARbeta antagonist by gradually modifying the bulkiness of a single substitution. Together, our results provide structural guidelines for the synthesis of RARbeta-selective agonists and antagonists, allowing for the first time to address pharmacologically the tumour suppressor role of RARbeta in vitro and in animal models.  相似文献

In phylogenetic analysis we face the problem that several subclade topologies are known or easily inferred and well supported by bootstrap analysis, but basal branching patterns cannot be unambiguously estimated by the usual methods (maximum parsimony (MP), neighbor-joining (NJ), or maximum likelihood (ML)), nor are they well supported. During continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) the peritoneal immune cells, mainly macrophages, are highly compromised by multiple factors including oxidative stress, resulting in a loss of functional activity. One reason for the increase of inflammatory reactions could be an imbalance in the thiol-disulfide status. Here, the possible protective effects of the antioxidant flavonoid complex silymarin and its major component silibinin on the cellular thiol status were investigated. Peritoneal macrophages from dialysis fluid of 30 CAPD patients were treated with silymarin or silibinin up to 35 days.

A time-dependent increase of intracellular thiols was observed with a nearly linear increment up to 2.5-fold after 96 hours, reaching a maximum of 3.5-fold after 20 days of culture. Surface-located thiols were also elevated. The stabilization of the cellular thiol status was followed by an improvement of phagocytosis and the degree of maturation as well as significant changes in the synthesis of IL-6 and IL-1ra. Furthermore, the treatment of peritoneal macrophages with flavonoids in combination with cysteine donors resulted in a shortened and more efficient time course of thiol normalization as well as in a further increased phagocytosis. In addition, GSH-depletion in thiol-deficient media simulating CAPD procedures led to intracellular thiol deficiency similar to the in vivo situation.

It is concluded that treatment with milk thistle extracts silymarin and silibinin alone or, more effectively in combination with cysteine donors, provide a benefit for peritoneal macrophages of CAPD-patients due to a normalization and activation of the cellular thiol status followed by a restoration of specific functional capabilities.  相似文献

Inner ear stones (otoliths) of larval cichlid fish were labelled with the calcium-tracer alizarin-complexone (AC) before animals were subjected to hypergravity (hg; 3 g). After the experiment, the otoliths' area between the two AC-labellings was measured. Growth of hg-otoliths was significantly slowed down as compared to 1 g-control specimens. In the course of a second experiment, the vestibular nerve was unilaterally transacted in neonate swordtail fish which were subsequently incubated in AC. Incorporation of AC was considerably lower in the otoliths of the transacted side. The results strongly suggest that otolith growth is continuously regulated in dependence of the environmental gravity vector. Since the otolithic calcium incorporation ceased on the transected head sides, it is concluded that the regulation of otolith growth is based on the central nervous efferent vestibular system.  相似文献
