Genetic diversity is a key factor that can influence mate choice in many species. We experimentally determined the influence of this factor on mate preference in the crustacean terrestrial isopod Armadillidium vulgare. This biological model is gregarious which could increase the risk of inbreeding by mating with closely related partners. Mechanisms of inbreeding avoidance during mate choice can thus be expected. Moreover, previous studies predict that males would be the choosy sex. We performed Y‐choice tests giving males the choice between two females presenting different levels of heterozygosity and genetic similarity to the male. Our results show potential inbreeding avoidance according to the genetic characteristics of females presented to males. The higher the variation in genetic similarity to the male between females is, the higher the preference of the male towards the most dissimilar female is. Hence, male preferences may only be detectable when the difference between females’ genetic characteristics is large enough. If heterozygosity is associated with fitness in A. vulgare (as in many organisms), the patterns of mate preference we observe may be adaptive. 相似文献

Cytokine-mediated cell death in tumor cells can be achieved through endogenous nitric oxide (NO) from within tumor cells
or exogenous NO from either activated macrophages or endothelial cells. The purpose of this study was to determine the role
of Bcl-2 in NO-mediated apoptosis. The incubation of murine L929 and NIH3T3 cells with interleukin-1α (IL-1α) and interferon
γ (IFNγ) induced high endogenous NO production only in the L929 cells that also underwent apoptosis. NIH3T3 cells were not
resistant to NO-mediated apoptosis. In fact, the incubation of L929 and NIH3T3 cells with exogenous NO derived from NO donors,
sodium nitroprusside, or S-nitroso-N-acetyl-DL-penicillamine (SNAP) induced death, characterized by typical apoptotic morphology and DNA fragmentation, in both cell types,
but to a higher degree in NIH3T3 cells than in the L929 cells. We then measured the effect of Bcl-2 expression on exogenous
NO-induced apoptosis. At both the mRNA and protein levels, L929 fibroblasts expressed higher levels of endogenous mouse Bcl-2
than did NIH3T3 cells. At the same time, L929 cells were much more resistant to exogenous NO-induced cell death than were
NIH3T3 cells. The inverse correlation between mouse Bcl-2 expression and sensitivity to exogenous NO-mediated cell death was
also found in the murine K-1735 melanoma C-23 and X-21 clonal populations. Transfection of both NIH3T3 cells and L929 cells
with the human bcl-2 gene led to resistance to both exogenous and endogenous NO-mediated apoptosis. These data demonstrate that NO-mediated apoptosis
can be suppressed by expression of Bcl-2, suggesting that abnormal expression of Bcl-2 may influence the efficacy of tumor
immunotherapy.

The coral holobiont is a dynamic assemblage of the coral animal, zooxanthellae, endolithic algae and fungi, Bacteria,Archaea and viruses. Zooxanthellae and some Bacteria form relatively stable and species-specific associations with corals. Other associations are less specific; coral-associated Archaea differ from those in the water column, but the same archaeal species may be found on different coral species. It has been hypothesized that the coral animal can adapt to differing ecological niches by 'switching' its microbial associates. In the case of corals and zooxanthellae, this has been termed adaptive bleaching and it has important implications for carbon cycling within the coral holobiont and ultimately the survival of coral reefs. However, the roles of other components of the coral holobiont are essentially unknown. To better understand these other coral associates, a fractionation procedure was used to separate the microbes, mitochondria and viruses from the coral animal cells and zooxanthellae. The resulting metagenomic DNA was sequenced using pyrosequencing. Fungi, Bacteria and phage were the most commonly identified organisms in the metagenome. Three of the four fungal phyla were represented, including a wide diversity of fungal genes involved in carbon and nitrogen metabolism, suggesting that the endolithic community is more important than previously appreciated. In particular, the data suggested that endolithic fungi could be converting nitrate and nitrite to ammonia, which would enable fixed nitrogen to cycle within the coral holobiont. The most prominent bacterial groups were Proteobacteria (68%), Firmicutes (10%), Cyanobacteria (7%) and Actinobacteria (6%). Functionally, the bacterial community was primarily heterotrophic and included a number of pathways for the degradation of aromatic compounds, the most abundant being the homogentisate pathway. The most abundant phage family was the ssDNA Microphage and most of the eukaryotic viruses were most closely related to those known to infect aquatic organisms. This study provides a metabolic and taxonomic snapshot of microbes associated with the reef-building coral Porites astreoides and presents a basis for understanding how coral-microbial interactions structure the holobiont and coral reefs. 相似文献

Common vampire bat populations distributed from Mexico to Argentina are important rabies reservoir hosts in Latin America. The aim of this work was to analyse the population structure of the rabies virus (RABV) variants associated with vampire bats in the Americas and to study their phylodynamic pattern within Argentina. The phylogenetic analysis based on all available vampire bat‐related N gene sequences showed both a geographical and a temporal structure. The two largest groups of RABV variants from Argentina were isolated from northwestern Argentina and from the central western zone of northeastern Argentina, corresponding to livestock areas with different climatic, topographic and biogeographical conditions, which determined their dissemination and evolutionary patterns. In addition, multiple introductions of the infection into Argentina, possibly from Brazil, were detected. The phylodynamic analysis suggests that RABV transmission dynamics is characterized by initial epizootic waves followed by local enzootic cycles with variable persistence. Anthropogenic interventions in the ecosystem should be assessed taking into account not only the environmental impact but also the potential risk of disease spreading through dissemination of current RABV lineages or the emergence of novel ones associated with vampire bats. 相似文献

The beneficial effects of exercise in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are not fully proven, given that it may occasionally induce acute metabolic disturbances. Indeed, the metabolic disturbances associated with sustained exercise may lead to worsening control unless great care is taken to adjust carbohydrate intake and insulin dosage. In this work, pre- and post-exercise metabolites were analyzed using a (1)H-NMR and GC-MS untargeted metabolomics approach assayed in serum. We studied ten men with T1D and eleven controls matched for age, body mass index, body fat composition, and cardiorespiratory capacity, participated in the study. The participants performed 30 minutes of exercise on a cycle-ergometer at 80% VO(2)max. In response to exercise, both groups had increased concentrations of gluconeogenic precursors (alanine and lactate) and tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates (citrate, malate, fumarate and succinate). The T1D group, however, showed attenuation in the response of these metabolites to exercise. Conversely to T1D, the control group also presented increases in α-ketoglutarate, alpha-ketoisocaproic acid, and lipolysis products (glycerol and oleic and linoleic acids), as well as a reduction in branched chain amino acids (valine and leucine) determinations. The T1D patients presented a blunted metabolic response to acute exercise as compared to controls. This attenuated response may interfere in the healthy performance or fitness of T1D patients, something that further studies should elucidate. 相似文献
