Callitrichids have been proposed as communal breeders, with non-reproductive animals acting as helpers. Reports in the literature attest to the high variability in the behaviour of helpers. The present study assessed four proximate factors involved in helping in captive Callithrix jacchus: age, gender and experience of helpers and composition of their groups. Forty-eight helpers from 15 families from Natal (Brazil) and Reading (UK) colonies were observed during the first 4 weeks of life of new-born twins. Infant carrying, transfers and retrieval, and duration of carrying bouts were registered. Results showed that the presence of helpers decreased the costs of infant carrying, with a negatively significant correlation between group size and mean percentage of carrying. Age, but not gender, was a significant factor for infant carrying, transfers and retrieval, and mean duration of carrying bouts, with older helpers contributing more than younger ones. Singletons and oldest non-reproductive offspring carried infants more, and longer, than twins and offspring with older siblings present in the group. Experience decreased motivation and actual carrying time, but not to a significant level. Age, experience and group composition appeared important factors in the display of infant care by helpers in captive Callithrix jacchus.  相似文献

Data describing segmental masses and moments of inertia (MOI) of limb segments are required for inverse dynamic calculations. In horses, these values are usually calculated using regression equations that have been developed from a limited number of horses representing a small number of breeds. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the performance of a scaling method and a pictorial method for estimating of the values of segmental masses, lengths, and MOI in the equine limb segments by comparing their output with the standard technique involving direct measurements. Limbs of 30 horses of various breeds and sizes were disarticulated post mortem. Segmental masses, lengths, and MOI were determined using a standard method based on weighing the segments, measuring their length with calipers, and estimating the MOI from the rotational frequency of a trifilar pendulum. The scaling method used a jack‐knifing procedure to avoid the need for two data sets. The pictorial method was based on digitization of two orthogonal photographs to determine segmental volumes, which were combined with published values for average segment densities to determine the inertial parameters. Scaling method and pictorial method provided comparable estimation of segmental messes and lengths, but the scaling method performed better in estimating segmental MOI. The scaling method worked well enough in the majority of horses but there were a few horses in which it was less effective. The pictorial method sometimes showed a bias correctable by regression equations but it may not warrant the additional effort unless for specific cases.  相似文献

The middle ear cavities of crocodilians have complex connections with the pharyngeal lumen, including lateral and median components which both open into a single chamber located on the dorsal midline of the pharynx. This chamber and the surrounding soft-tissue is herein termed the median pharyngeal valve. In the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) this valve opens, for a duration of 0.3 s, approximately every 120 s; the patency of the median pharyngeal valve was not influenced by either auditory stimuli or by submersing the alligator underwater. The median pharyngeal valve has an outer capsule of dense connective tissue and fibrocartilage and an inner “plug” of loose connective tissue. These opposing surfaces are lined by respiratory epithelium and separated by a cavity that is continuous with the middle ear cavities and the pharyngeal lumen (through a central opening in the capsule termed the pore). The inner plug of the median pharyngeal valve is contacted by skeletal muscles positioned to serve as both elevators/retractors (which would open the valve) and elevators/protractors (which, in conjunction with gravity, would close the valve). Unlike other vertebrate valve systems, the median pharyngeal valve appears to function as a deformable ball check valve.  相似文献

Aim

Species are expected to disperse poleward in response to climate change. For species that are endemic to the high latitudes, this implies that many in the future would face a “no-where-to-go” situation as they are currently occupying the northernmost portion of the continent. Further, because endemism may arise from a combination of physical barriers, climate and geological history, the persistence of many species may require spatial matching of multiple environmental factors within a limited dispersal space. Thus, it is not clear how endemic species might spatially adjust their distributions in response to climate change and whether there are future climate change refugia for these species.

Methods

We used ensemble bioclimatic models to evaluate drivers and directional patterns of future change in the distributions of 66 North American Beringian and amphi-Beringian species currently occurring in Alaska and the Yukon. We explored the spatial pattern of species richness, losses and climate change refugia across the region.

Results

More than 80% of the species showed northward shifts in their latitudinal centroids under intermediate warming and are expected to shift their range northward by more than 140 km on average by 2040. Additionally, more than 60% were projected to experience range contractions and up to 20% of the species would have the potential to expand their ranges by more than 100%.

Main Conclusions

Suitable habitat for endemic species in northwest North America is expected to decline significantly, especially for species occupying the Arctic tundra. Although the models identified several potential refugia from future climate change, especially at high latitude and elevation, whether the species would be able to colonize new habitats on their own and/or capitalize sufficiently on in situ refugia remains a pertinent conservation question.  相似文献

Photosystem 1 (PS1) enriched preparations have been extracted from the cyanobacterium Chlorogloea fritschii grown either in darkness or in the light. Absorption spectra show that the main chlorophyll peak has shifted from 678 nm in PS1 from light grown cells to 675 nm in PS1 from dark grown cells. Fluorescence spectra show a similar blue shift in wavelength maximum from 690 nm to 678 nm and the fluorescence intensity is higher in PS1 from dark grown cells. Allophycocyanin is present in PS1 from light grown cells, but absent from preparations from C. fritschii grown in the dark. P700: chlorophyll a ratios of the preparations from light and dark grown cells are 1:35 and 1:80 respectively, all P700 being photoactive. The results are interpreted to suggest that allophycocyanin is not attached to PS1 in dark grown C. fritschii, neither is all chlorophyll arranged in such a way as to ensure efficient energy transfer to P700.  相似文献

The microcrustacean and rotifer communities associated with submerged aquatic plants were studied over a three-year period in a series of experimental ponds, created within a fenland drainage ditch. Seasonal abundance and spatial distributions were assessed. The ponds contained a varying amount of vegetation, dominated either by Ceratophyllum demersum or Stratiotes aloides and this had consequences for the ponds' animal communities. Increasing densities of Ceratophyllum were associated with increases in weed-associated entomostracans whereas increases in Stratiotes led to a general decrease in associated animals. Increases in both plant species led to reductions in abundance of Daphnia, but to differing amounts. A relatively low density plant population in the presence of zooplanktovorous fish did not provide a refuge from predation for large-bodied Cladocera.  相似文献

Mutations in the mitochondrial aminoacyl‐tRNA synthetases (mtaaRSs) can cause profound clinical presentations, and have manifested as diseases with very selective tissue specificity. To date most of the mtaaRS mutations could be phenotypically recognized, such that clinicians could identify the affected mtaaRS from the symptoms alone. Among the recently reported pathogenic variants are point mutations in FARS2 gene, encoding the human mitochondrial PheRS. Patient symptoms range from spastic paraplegia to fatal infantile Alpers encephalopathy. How clinical manifestations of these mutations relate to the changes in three‐dimensional structures and kinetic characteristics remains unclear, although impaired aminoacylation has been proposed as possible etiology of diseases. Here, we report four crystal structures of HsmtPheRS mutants, and extensive MD simulations for wild‐type and nine mutants to reveal the structural changes on dynamic trajectories of HsmtPheRS. Using steady‐state kinetic measurements of phenylalanine activation and tRNAPhe aminoacylation, we gained insight into the structural and kinetic effects of mitochondrial disease‐related mutations in FARS2 gene.  相似文献
