This study examines the role of teachers' expectations in the association between children's socio-economic background and achievement outcomes. Furthermore, the role of children's ethnicity in moderating this mediated relation is investigated. In the present study, 3,948 children from kindergarten are examined. Data are analysed by means of structural equation modeling. First, results show that teachers' expectations mediate the relation between children's SES and their later language and math achievement, after controlling for children's ethnicity, prior achievement and gender. This result indicates that teachers may exacerbate individual differences between children. Second, children's ethnicity moderates the mediation effect of teachers' expectations with respect to math outcomes. The role of teachers' expectations in mediating the relation between SES and math outcomes is stronger for majority children than for minority children. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) confine a group of rare and heterogeneous disorders, which present with progressive ataxia and numerous other features e.g. peripheral neuropathy, macular degeneration and cognitive impairment, and a subset of these disorders is caused by CAG-repeat expansions in their respective genes. The diagnosing of the SCAs is often difficult due to the phenotypic overlap among several of the subtypes and with other neurodegenerative disorders e.g. Huntington's disease, CASE PRESENTATION: We report a family in which the proband had rapidly progressing cognitive decline and only subtle cerebellar symptoms from age 42. Sequencing of the TATA-box binding protein gene revealed a modest elongation of the CAG/CAA-repeat of only two repeats above the non-pathogenic threshold of 41, confirming a diagnosis of SCA17. Normally, repeats within this range show reduced penetrance and result in a milder disease course with slower progression and later age of onset. Thus, this case presented with an unusual phenotype. CONCLUSIONS: The current case highlights the diagnostic challenge of neurodegenerative disorders and the need for a thorough clinical and paraclinical examination of patients presenting with rapid cognitive decline to make a precise diagnosis on which further genetic counseling and initiation of treatment modalities can be based. 相似文献

Darwin's claim 'that the difference in mind between man and the higher animals … is certainly one of degree and not of kind' is at the core of the comparative study of cognition. Recent research provides unprecedented support for Darwin's claim as well as new reasons to question it, stimulating new theories of human cognitive uniqueness. This article compares and evaluates approaches to such theories. Some prominent theories propose sweeping domain-general characterizations of the difference in cognitive capabilities and/or mechanisms between adult humans and other animals. Dual-process theories for some cognitive domains propose that adult human cognition shares simple basic processes with that of other animals while additionally including slower-developing and more explicit uniquely human processes. These theories are consistent with a modular account of cognition and the 'core knowledge' account of children's cognitive development. A complementary proposal is that human infants have unique social and/or cognitive adaptations for uniquely human learning. A view of human cognitive architecture as a mosaic of unique and species-general modular and domain-general processes together with a focus on uniquely human developmental mechanisms is consistent with modern evolutionary-developmental biology and suggests new questions for comparative research. 相似文献

AimTo show our preliminary experience in using TrueBeam with RapidArc technology and FFF beam for stereotactic re-irradiation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.BackgroundThanks to new advanced techniques, as well as intensity modulated radiation therapy, it is possible to approach head and neck recurrences in selected patients. Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) in its RapidArc® format, permits to reduce significantly the time to deliver complex intensity modulated plans, allowing to treat hypofractionated regimes within a few minutes. With TrueBeam it is possible to perform photon beams without usage of the flattening filter. It seems possible to expect a reduction of out-of-field dose when flattening filter free (FFF) beams are used. While research into the physics domain for FFF beams is increasing, there are very few clinical data where FFF beams are applied in clinical practice.Materials and methodsWe present here the cases of 4 patients with local or regional recurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. All patients were treated using TrueBeam with RapidArc technology and FFF beam for stereotactic hypofractionated re-irradiation.ResultsAll patients concluded SBRT and showed good tolerability. During follow-up, complete response at imaging evaluation (PET and/or MRI) for all treated patients was documented.ConclusionsOur preliminary experience using TrueBeam with RapidArc technology and FFF beam for stereotactic hypofractionated re-irradiation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma was safe and effective in all 4 treated patients. Many fungal species use glycerol as a compatible solute with which to maintain osmotic homeostasis in response to changes in external osmolarity. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, intracellular glycerol concentrations are regulated largely by the high osmolarity glycerol (HOG) response pathway, both through induction of glycerol biosynthesis and control of its flux through the plasma membrane Fps1 glycerol channel. The channel activity of Fps1 is also controlled by a pair of positive regulators, Rgc1 and Rgc2. In this study, we demonstrate that Candida glabrata, a fungal pathogen that possesses two Fps1 orthologs and two Rgc1/-2 orthologs, accumulates glycerol in response to hyperosmotic stress. We present an initial characterization of mutants with deletions in the C. glabrata FPS1 (CAGL0C03267 [www.candidagenome.org]) and FPS2 (CAGL0E03894) genes and find that a double mutant accumulates glycerol, experiences constitutive cell wall stress, and is hypersensitive to treatment by caspofungin, an antifungal agent that targets the cell wall. This mutant is cleared more efficiently in mouse infections than is wild-type C. glabrata by caspofungin treatment. Finally, we demonstrate that one of the C. glabrata RGC orthologs complements an S. cerevisiae rgc1 rgc2 null mutant, supporting the conclusion that this regulatory assembly is conserved between these species. 相似文献

Urate is a major antioxidant as well as the enzymatic end product of purine metabolism in humans. Higher levels correlate with a reduced risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD) and with a slower rate of PD progression. In this study we investigated the effects of modulating intracellular urate concentration on 1-methyl-4-phenyl-pyridinium (MPP(+))-induced degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in cultures of mouse ventral mesencephalon prepared to contain low (neuron-enriched cultures) or high (neuron-glial cultures) percentage of astrocytes. Urate, added to the cultures 24 hours before and during treatment with MPP(+), attenuated the loss of dopaminergic neurons in neuron-enriched cultures and fully prevented their loss and atrophy in neuron-astrocyte cultures. Exogenous urate was found to increase intracellular urate content in cortical neuronal cultures. To assess the effect of reducing cellular urate content on MPP(+)-induced toxicity, mesencephalic neurons were prepared from mice over-expressing urate oxidase (UOx). Transgenic UOx expression decreased endogenous urate content both in neurons and astrocytes. Dopaminergic neurons expressing UOx were more susceptible to MPP(+) in mesencephalic neuron-enriched cultures and to a greater extent in mesencephalic neuron-astrocyte cultures. Our findings correlate intracellular urate content in dopaminergic neurons with their toxin resistance in a cellular model of PD and suggest a facilitative role for astrocytes in the neuroprotective effect of urate. 相似文献

Introduction
Health utilities of tuberculosis (TB) patients may be diminished by side effects from medication, prolonged treatment duration, physical effects of the disease itself, and social stigma attached to the disease.Methods
We collected health utility data from Thai patients who were on TB treatment or had been successfully treated for TB for the purpose of economic modeling. Structured questionnaire and EuroQol (EQ-5D) and EuroQol visual analog scale (EQ-VAS) instruments were used as data collection tools. We compared utility of patients with two co-morbidities calculated using multiplicative model (UCAL) with the direct measures and fitted Tobit regression models to examine factors predictive of health utility and to assess difference in health utilities of patients in various medical conditions.Results
Of 222 patients analyzed, 138 (62%) were male; median age at enrollment was 40 years (interquartile range [IQR], 35–47). Median monthly household income was 6,000 Baht (187 US$; IQR, 4,000–15,000 Baht [125–469 US$]). Concordance correlation coefficient between utilities measured using EQ-5D and EQ-VAS (UEQ-5D and UVAS, respectively) was 0.6. UCAL for HIV-infected TB patients was statistically different from the measured UEQ-5D (p-value<0.01) and UVAS (p-value<0.01). In tobit regression analysis, factors independently predictive of UEQ-5D included age and monthly household income. Patients aged ≥40 years old rated UEQ-5D significantly lower than younger persons. Higher UEQ-5D was significantly associated with higher monthly household income in a dose response fashion. The median UEQ-5D was highest among patients who had been successfully treated for TB and lowest among multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) patients who were on treatment.Conclusions
UCAL of patients with two co-morbidities overestimated the measured utilities, warranting further research of how best to estimate utilities of patients with such conditions. TB and MDR-TB treatments impacted on patients'' self perceived health status. This effect diminished after successful treatment. 相似文献999.
