A new species of grunt sculpin, Rhamphocottus nagaakii inhabiting the northwestern Pacific, previously identified as Rhamphocottus richardsonii Günther 1874, is described based on genetic evidence and morphological differences. The new species can be distinguished based on morphometric characters related to the head, including head length [45.3–54.6% of standard length (SL)], postorbital head length (18.8–25.5% SL) and the length of pectoral-fin base (15.8–20.7% SL), which are smaller than in R. richardsonii (53.6–60.5% SL, 26.2–31.7% SL, and 19.5–25.2% SL, respectively). Genetic differences between two species markedly exceed levels for intra-specific differences. Rhamphocottus nagaakii is considered to have arisen from a common ancestor of the two species, which probably inhabited somewhere the North Pacific Rim around the Aleutian Archipelago. During a period of cooling in the Pliocene or the Miocene, R. nagaakii and R. richardsonii became separated to the southern regions of the northwestern and northeastern Pacific, and subsequently underwent speciation.

The purposes of the present study were to determine the changes in functional residual capacity (FRC) during inspiratory loading and to examine their mechanisms. We studied seven normal subjects seated in a body plethysmograph. In both graded inspiratory elastic (35, 48, and 68 cmH2O/l) and resistive (21, 86, and 192 cmH2O.l-1.s) loading, FRC invariably decreased from control FRC and phasic expiratory activity increased. The reduction in FRC was greater with greater loads. A single inspiratory effort against an inspiratory occlusion at three different target mouth pressures (-25, -50, and -75 cmH2O) and durations (1, 2, and 5 s) also resulted in a decrease in FRC with an increase in expiratory electromyogram activity in the following expiration. The decrease in FRC was greater with greater target pressure and duration. This decrease in FRC is qualitatively similar to that during inspiratory loaded breathing, and we suspect that the same mechanisms are at work. Because neither vagal nor chemoreceptor reflex can account for these responses, we suspect conscious awareness of breathing or behavioral control to be responsible. In an additional study, the sensation of discomfort of breathing during elastic loading decreased with a decrease in FRC. These results suggest that the reduced FRC may be due to behavioral control of breathing to reduce the sensation of dyspnea during inspiratory loading.  相似文献

Strains of two types of methylotrophic bacteria, Paracoccus denitrificans and Methylobacterium extorquens, synthesized the copolyester poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) when methanol and n-amyl alcohol were added together to nitrogen-limited medium. The composition of the copolyester differed considerably between the two strains: the copolyester from P. denitrificans was comparatively rich in 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV). The 3HV content of the copolyester synthesized by this strain increased with increasing concentrations of n-amyl alcohol. Its maximum content was 91.5 mol% under the conditions used. In M. extorquens, the maximum 3HV content was limited to 38.2 mol%. Since n-amyl alcohol served as a substrate for a standard methanol dehydrogenase, the enzyme was proposed to oxidize both methanol and n-amyl alcohol in the first step of copolyester synthesis from these substrates by methanol-grown cells.  相似文献

AimsCircadian clocks regulate daily rhythms of behavior and physiology such as the sleep–wake cycle and hormonal secretion. Numerous characteristics of the behavioral and physiological processes change with age. In this study, we evaluated the circadian clockwork in older people by measuring daily profiles of PERIOD (PER) gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).Main methodsBlood samples were collected from 6 healthy older subjects (mean age 62 years) at 2-h intervals over a 24-h period under a semi-constant routine condition where masking effects are minimized. PBMCs were isolated from whole blood and temporal mRNA expression profiles of PER1, PER2, and PER3 were determined by RT-PCR. Phases of the PER rhythms, and times of sleep onset and offset were determined using data from those subjects who showed significant 24-h rhythms. The values for the parameters were compared between the older subjects and 8 young control subjects (mean age 21 years).Key findingsProminent daily rhythms of PER1, PER2, and PER3 mRNA levels, advanced sleep–wake timing and advanced phases of PER rhythms were observed in the older subjects compared to the young controls. There was no significant age-related phase difference in PER1 or PER2 rhythm with respect to sleep timing; however, PER3 expression pattern was altered in the older subjects.SignificanceThis preliminary study shows that human circadian clockwork in PBMCs remains intact at least until the presenile stage and suggests that the altered PER3 expression pattern may reflect decreased homeostatic sleep drive in older people.  相似文献

This paper attempts to bring new insights to a long-standing historical debate over medical specialization by analyzing the formation of medical mycology, a somewhat marginal biomedical discipline that emerged in the mid-twentieth century around studies of fungal disease in humans. The study of fungi predates that of bacteria and viruses, but from the 1880s it became eclipsed by bacteriology. However, in the postwar period, there were moves to establish medical mycology as an independent speciality. I trace the processes that led to the launch of professional societies in the United States, Britain and Japan, three major players in medical mycology, and more broadly in biomedicine. The analysis of the three different national contexts illustrates how geographical, medico-technological, epidemiological, political and social conditions gave the specialty a distinctive character in each country; this was further complicated by the different and changing medical fields in which fungal diseases were studied and treated. The three case studies show medical specialization as a process that is not simply cumulative but responds to specific historical events and developments.  相似文献
