The relationship between tree distribution and topography was examined in a small river basin (3.4 ha) comprising a complex mosaic of topographical units at 102 to 103 m2 order, each of which had a shallow valley bordered by small ridges or breaks of slopes. Twenty-five major woody species were divided into two groups (groups A and B) based on a cluster analysis using the distribution data in the basin. Group A, which mainly consisted of early-successional species, was distributed around the valley sites of the topographical units, while group B, which mainly consisted of late-successional species, was distributed around the ridge sites of the topographical units. This vegetation pattern coincided with erosional condition in the basin. That is, the valley sites were eroded more actively than the ridge sites, as soil depth tended to be thin in the valley sites and thick in the ridge sites, and because large (canopy) trees were restricted in the ridge sites. There was no tendency that group B was replacing group A, and hence it was suggested that repeated disturbance by slope failures or small-scale shallow landslides have prevented compositional change from the early-successional (group A) to the late-successional (group B) species by preventing the invasion of the latter into valley sites.  相似文献

Epiphyseal growth plate cartilages from the proximal tibia of normal, hypophysectomized, and growth hormone (GH)-treated hypophysectomized rats were subjected to immunohistochemistry for detection of epidermal growth factor (EGF). In the normal growth plate, EGF was distributed mainly in the proliferative zone. Hypophysectomy resulted in considerable atrophy of the chondrocytes and the cartilage matrix (a decreased number of mature-type chondrocytes and a decreased ratio of proliferating to hypertrophic chondrocytes) and a significant diminution of EGF immunoreactivity. Treatment with GH reversed these effects of hypophysectomy, causing an increased thickness of the growth plate and EGF-reactive sites in all chondrocyte layers. The most intense immunostaining for EGF, however, was frequently seen in the nuclei of chondrocytes with flattened appearance. It appears that EGF could be incorporated or synthesized in chondrocytes having marked mitogenic activity. The present results, taken with previous data on EGF involvement in growth of cartilaginous tissue in vivo and in vitro, strongly suggest that EGF-immunoreactive chondrocytes are involved in cartilage proliferation and growth under the specific influence of GH.  相似文献

Expression of the umuDC operon is required for UV and most chemical mutagenesis in Escherichia coli. The closely related species Salmonella typhimurium has two sets of umuDC-like operons, umuDC ST on the chromosome and samAB on a 60-MDa cryptic plasmid. The roles of theumuDC-like operons in chemically induced frameshift mutagenesis of the hisD3052 allele of S. typhimurium were investigated. Introduction of a pBR322-derived plasmid carrying umuDCST increased the rate of reversion of hisD3052, following treatment with 1-nitropyrene (1-NP) or 1,8-dinitropyrene (1,-8DNP) tenfold and fivefold, respectively, whereas it did not substantially increase the rate of reversion induced by other frameshift mutagens, i.e. 2-nitrofluorene (2NF) and 2-amino- 3-methyldipyrido[1,2-a:3 ′,2′-d]imi-dazole (Glu-P-1). Introduction of a pBR322-derived plasmid carrying samAB did not increase the incidence of reversion of hisD3052 observed with any of the mutagens examined. Deletion of umuDC STSubstantially lowered the reversion rate induced by l-NP or 1,8-DNP, but it did not affect reversion induced by 2-NF, Glu-P-1 or N-hydroxyacetylaminofluorene (N-OH-AAF). Deletion of samAB had little impact on reversion incidence induced by any of the five frameshift mutagens. DNA amplification using the polymerase chain reaction technique followed by restriction enzyme analysis using BssHII, suggested that the mutations induced by the five frameshift mutagens were all CG deletions at the CGCGCGCG sequence in hisD3052. These results suggest that umuDCST, but not samAB, is involved in the -2 frameshift mutagenesis induced by l-NP and 1,8-DNP at the repetitive CG sequence, whereas neither operon participates in induction of the same type of mutations by 2-NF, Glu-P-1 or N-OH-AAF.  相似文献

Summary Succinic dehydrogenase, five DPN-linked dehydrogenases-lactic dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase, glutamic dehydrogenase, -glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, -hydroxybutyric dehydrogenase, two TPN linked dehydrogenases — glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, isocitric dehydrogenase and 3-ol steroid dehydrogenase were studied in mouse, rat, guinea pig, rabbit, dog, cat, cow, monkey and human adrenal glands. Histochemical studies were made of a characteristic distribution of different level of enzyme activity. In mammals adrenal glands, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase showed the highest activity and its localization was divided into the following two groups: 1) High enzymatic activity was demonstrated in the zona fasciculata and reticularis of the rat, guinea pig, rabbit, cat and 2) high enzymatic activity was demonstrated in the zona glomerulosa and reticularis of the dog, cow and monkey. A precise relationship between the localization and endocrinological function remains abscure.  相似文献

Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), an aromatic tricyclic o-quinone, was identified initially as a redox cofactor for bacterial dehydrogenases. Although PQQ is not biosynthesized in mammals, trace amounts of PQQ have been found in human and rat tissues because of its wide distribution in dietary sources. Importantly, nutritional studies in rodents have revealed that PQQ deficiency exhibits diverse systemic responses, including growth impairment, immune dysfunction, and abnormal reproductive performance. Although PQQ is not currently classified as a vitamin, PQQ has been implicated as an important nutrient in mammals. In recent years, PQQ has been receiving much attention owing to its physiological importance and pharmacological effects. In this article, we review the potential health benefits of PQQ with a focus on its growth-promoting activity, anti-diabetic effect, anti-oxidative action, and neuroprotective function. Additionally, we provide an update of its basic pharmacokinetics and safety information in oral ingestion.  相似文献

Hydroxypipecolic acids are bioactive compounds widely distributed in nature and are valuable building blocks for the organic synthesis of pharmaceuticals. We have found a novel hydroxylating enzyme with activity toward l-pipecolic acid (l-Pip) in a filamentous fungus, Fusarium oxysporum c8D. The enzyme l-Pip trans-4-hydroxylase (Pip4H) of F. oxysporum (FoPip4H) belongs to the Fe(II)/α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase superfamily, catalyzes the regio- and stereoselective hydroxylation of l-Pip, and produces optically pure trans-4-hydroxy-l-pipecolic acid (trans-4-l-HyPip). Amino acid sequence analysis revealed several fungal enzymes homologous with FoPip4H, and five of these also had l-Pip trans-4-hydroxylation activity. In particular, the homologous Pip4H enzyme derived from Aspergillus nidulans FGSC A4 (AnPip4H) had a broader substrate specificity spectrum than other homologues and reacted with the l and d forms of various cyclic and aliphatic amino acids. Using FoPip4H as a biocatalyst, a system for the preparative-scale production of chiral trans-4-l-HyPip was successfully developed. Thus, we report a fungal family of l-Pip hydroxylases and the enzymatic preparation of trans-4-l-HyPip, a bioactive compound and a constituent of secondary metabolites with useful physiological activities.  相似文献

Cells of the thermophilic cyanobacterium Thermosynechococcus vulcanus strain RKN (NIES‐2134) aggregate and produce extracellular cellulose under induced conditions of blue light and low temperature, and both aggregation and cellulose production require the cellulose synthase Tll0007 (XcsA) and photosensory diguanylate cyclases. However, overexpression of both the cellulose synthase and a constitutively active diguanylate cyclase was not sufficient to induce cellulose‐mediated cell aggregation under normal growth conditions. Synteny analysis and gene knockout revealed that two putative genes, hlyD‐like tlr0903 (xcsB) and endoglucanase‐like tlr1902 (xcsC), are linked to tll0007, although they are located apart from tll0007 in the T. vulcanus genome. Gene knockdown revealed that tlr1605 (tolC) was essential for the cellulose‐mediated cell aggregation. Low temperature induced marked upregulation of tlr0903, and overexpression of both tlr0903 (but not tlr1902) and diguanylate cyclase resulted in the strong cell aggregation and cellulose accumulation under normal conditions. Based on these and phylogenetic analysis, we propose that the cyanobacterial extracellular cellulose production is due to a novel variant of the bacterial tripartite secretion system.  相似文献

The evolution and maintenance of female ornamentation has attracted increasing attention, because the previous explanation, that is a non‐functional copy of functional male ornamentation, seems insufficient to explain female ornamentation. A post‐mating sexual selection, differential allocation, may be more common than pre‐mating sexual selection, but few studies have investigated differential allocation by males. Here, we studied differential allocation of incubation investment by male barn swallows Hirundo rustica, a model species for the study of sexual selection, because our previous correlative study demonstrated a positive relationship between female tail length and male incubation investment. We manipulated the length of the outermost tail feathers in females after clutch completion and examined whether males adjust incubation investment according to female ornamentation. Because extra‐pair paternity is virtually absent in the study population, we were able to study differential allocation based on the tradeoff between current and future reproductive investments, rather than the tradeoff between current paternal investment and additional mating effort. The experimental treatment had no significant effect on male nest attentiveness, whereas female tail length before manipulation predicted male nest attentiveness. The observed pattern is consistent with differential access; that is, well‐ornamented individuals have greater access to mates with high reproductive (parental) ability, rather than differential allocation during incubation. Alternatively, males can directly assess eggs in their nests, and thus, as seen in other species, males might adjust their incubation investment based on the egg characteristics of long‐tailed females.  相似文献

Bioactivity of human growth hormone in urine from acromegalic patients   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Bioactivity of hGH in urine from five acromegalic patients was determined by Nb2 bioassay and IM-9 receptor modulation assay (RMA). Urine samples were concentrated by immunoadsorbent chromatography, dialysis and lyophilization. The ratio of the bioactivity by Im-9 RMA and the immunoactivity by RIA was between 0.81 and 1.24 (1.01 +/- 0.19, mean +/- SD). The ratio of the bioactivity by Nb2 bioassay and the immunoactivity ranged from 0.45 to 0.60 (1.37 +/- 0.85). Gel chromatography of hGH in urine samples measured by sensitive sandwich enzyme immunoassay showed that more than 97% of hGH activity was the 22K form. Urinary hGH from acromegalic patients was bioactive in Nb2 bioassay and IM-9 RMA and the bioactivity showed a close correlation with the immunoactivity. The major immunoactive form of hGH (22K) seems to correspond to the bioactivity.  相似文献
