Although diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) are different disease entities, they share similar neuropathic symptoms that impede quality of life for these patients. Despite having very similar downstream effects, there have been no direct comparisons between DPN and CIPN with respect to symptom severity and therapeutic responses. We compared peripheral nerve damage due to hyperglycemia with that caused by paclitaxel (PAC) treatment as represented by biochemical parameters, diverse sensory tests, and immunohistochemistry of cutaneous and sciatic nerves. The therapeutic effects of alpha-lipoic acid and DA-9801 were also compared in the two models. Animals were divided into seven groups (n?=?7–10) as follows: normal, diabetes (DM), DM?+?alpha-lipoic acid 100?mg/kg (ALA), DM?+?DA-9801 (100?mg/kg), paclitaxel-treated rat (PAC), PAC?+?ALA (100?mg/kg), and PAC?+?DA-9801 (100?mg/kg). The sensory thresholds of animals to mechanical, heat, and pressure stimuli were altered by both hyperglycemia and PAC when compared with controls, and the responses to sensory tests were different between both groups. There were no significant differences in the biochemical markers of blood glutathione between DM and PAC groups (p?>?.05). Quantitative comparisons of peripheral nerves by intraepidermal nerve fiber density (IENFD) analysis indicated that the DM and PAC groups were similar (6.18?±?1.03 vs. 5.01?±?2.57). IENFD was significantly improved after ALA and DA-9801 treatment in diabetic animals (7.6?±?1.28, 7.7?±?1.28, respectively, p?p?>?.05). This study describes the seasonal distribution of larvae, nymph, and adult life stages for 3 species of ixodid ticks collected by tick drag and sweep methods from various habitats in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Grasses less than 0.5 m in height, including herbaceous and crawling vegetation, and deciduous, conifer, and mixed forests with abundant leaf/needle litter were surveyed at United States (US) and ROK operated military training sites and privately owned lands near the demilitarized zone from April-October, 2004 and 2005. Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann adults and nymphs were more frequently collected from April-August, while those of Haemaphysalis flava Neumann and Ixodes nipponensis Kitaoka and Saito were collected more frequently from April-July and again during October. H. longicornis was the most frequently collected tick in grass habitats (98.9%), while H. flava was more frequently collected in deciduous (60.2%) and conifer (57.4%) forest habitats. While more H. flava (54.1%) were collected in mixed forest habitats than H. longicornis (35.2%), the differences were not significant. I. nipponensis was more frequently collected from conifer (mean 8.8) compared to deciduous (3.2) and mixed (2.4) forests.  相似文献

Summary In view of the interest in high productivity fermentations at increased temperatures, the effect of temperature on the kinetics of ethanol production by Saccharomyces uvarum was investigated in the range 25–43°C. Using a mathematical model and a nonlinear computer simulation package, the kinetic parameters at each temperature were estimated. It was found that the optimal temperature for growth was 34°C, while the specific ethanol production rate was maximal at 37–43°C. Up to 37°C, the inhibitory effects of ethanol on growth and specific ethanol production rate were unaffected by temperature. However, above this temperature, ethanol inhibition increased significantly.  相似文献

A new series of polyhydroxylated N-benzylbenzamide derivatives containing an adamantyl moiety has been synthesized, and the depigmenting and tyrosinase inhibitory activities of the molecules were evaluated. The lipophilic character of the adamantyl moiety appeared to confer greater depigmentation power on the benzamide derivatives as compared to those lacking adamantyl substitution. Molecular modeling was applied in order to elucidate the interactions between ligands and tyrosinase that led to inhibition.  相似文献

Glycosylation of various glycosyl acceptors with 2'-carboxybenzyl (CB) 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside and CB 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzyl-alpha-D-mannopyranoside as glycosyl donors afforded alpha-C-glycosides exclusively or predominantly in good yields. Comprehensive metabolite fingerprinting of transgenic potatoes that constitutively express human beta amyloid, curdlan synthase (CRDS), and glycogen synthase (glgA); and of wild-type potatoes was carried out using FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy in combination with multivariate analyses. Comparison of metabolic patterns between transgenic and wild-type potatoes revealed that there were neither quantitative nor qualitative differences in metabolites between transgenic potatoes expressing human beta amyloid, CRDS or glgA, and non-transformed control potatoes. However, there were metabolic differences between two control potato lines — one that was fresh and the other stored. After 1 week of storage, comprehensive metabolite patterns were significantly modified. Although the differences between CRDS and glgA transgenic and control potato lines were small, PCA analysis of FT-IR and 1H NMR spectral data identified two distinct control lines. These results suggest that the comprehensive metabolite changes in control potato lines, which occurred after 1 week of storage, were greater than the differences between CRDS and glgA transgenic and wild-type potato lines. Thus, the combination of FT-IR and 1H NMR spectral data and multivariate analysis was valuable for the detection of comprehensive differences in metabolic profiles between transgenic and non-transformed control plants, even though peak-signal overlap prevented assignment of pure compounds. The combination of FT-IR and 1H NMR spectral data and multivariate analysis is a simple and rapid method for evaluation of the metabolic equivalence of GM crops.  相似文献

Glucose-limited continuous culture experiments with Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous ATCC 24202 were carried out in a 2.5 L jar fermentor at 20°C and pH 4.5. A reciprocal plot of the steady-state data at a dilution rate of 0.037∼0.096 h−1 was used to estimate a maximum specific growth rate constant of 0.11 h−1 and a Monod constant of 260 mg/L. The degree of carotenogenesis in X. dendrorhous was also investigated in terms of the residence time, which is the reciprocal of the dilution rate. The carotenoid content related to the residence time appeared to assume a typical form of saturation kinetics. The maximum carotenoid content for the strain was estimated to be 0.6 μg/mg dry cell weight. The saturation constant, which was tentatively defined in this work, was found to be 7.2 h.  相似文献
