Due to their lack of reproducibility, it is unlikely that GH stimulation tests can provide reliable diagnostic information to distinguish partial isolated GH deficiency (GHD) from idiopathic short stature (ISS). We hypothesized that the classical distinction between these groups, essentially based on stimulatory GH peaks, is artificial and that, as a consequence, the average response to GH treatment will not be different between them. The hypothesized lack of prognostic validity of stimulatory GH peaks was studied in 435 prepubertal children with nonorganic growth retardation. Children were categorized as 'severe GHD', 'partial GHD' or 'ISS', if the maximum rise in their serum GH during two GH stimulation tests was 0--10 mU/l, 10--20 mU/l, or >20 mU/l, respectively. Children with 'partial GHD' had short-term (1- and 2-year) and long-term (till final adult height) growth responses similar to those of children with ISS, significantly lower than the response seen in children with 'severe GHD'. In children with stimulatory GH peaks >10 mU/l, including those currently considered partially GH deficient, the maximum GH peak was not a significant determinant of growth response in the short or the long term. In conclusion, 'partial GHD' is ill defined and cannot be distinguished from ISS based on the currently applied auxological or GH stimulation test criteria alone. Neurokinin receptors (NK1, NK2, NK3) are G-protein-coupled receptors, which upon activation by a peptide agonist induce a transient increase in the concentration of intracellular calcium. The functional assay based on aequorin-derived luminescence triggered by receptor-mediated changes in Ca2+ levels was used to compare the effect of spantides I-III on SP-, NKA- and NKB-stimulated NK1, NK2 and NK3 receptors, respectively. Recombinant cell lines expressing neurokinin receptors and apoaequorin were used in the study. The obtained results indicate that all three spantides acted as competitive antagonists at the NK1 and NK2 receptors and inhibited agonist-induced calcium responses. The rank order of antagonism at the NK1 receptor was spantide II>spantide III>spantide I and at the NK2 receptor was spantide III>spantide II>spantide I. STKR is a G protein-coupled receptor that was cloned from the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans. Multiple sequence comparisons show that the amino acid sequence of this insect receptor displays several features that are typical for tachykinin (or neurokinin, NK) receptors. Insect tachykinin-related peptides, also referred to as "insectatachykinins," produce dose-dependent calcium responses in Drosophila melanogaster Schneider 2 cells, which are stably transfected with this receptor (S2-STKR). These responses do not depend on the presence of extracellular Ca(2+)-ions. A rapid agonist-induced increase of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP(3)) is observed. This indicates that the agonist-induced cytosolic Ca(2+)-rise is caused by a release of Ca(2+) ions from intracellular calcium stores. The pharmacology of STKR is analyzed by studying the effects of the most important antagonists for mammalian NK-receptors on STKR-expressing insect cells. The results show that spantide II, a potent substance P antagonist, is a real antagonist of insectatachykinins on STKR. We have also tested the activity of a variety of natural insectatachykinin analogs by microscopic image analysis of calcium responses in S2-STKR cells. At a concentration of 1 microM, almost all natural analogs produce a significant calcium rise in stable S2-STKR cells. Interestingly, Stc-TK, an insectatachykinin that was recently discovered in the stable fly (S. calcitrans), also proved to be an STKR-agonist. Based on biochemical and ultrastructural data, hyphochytriomycetes are
believed to share an ancestor with oomycetes and heterokont algae. In order
to study the phylogeny of the hyphochytriomycetes, we determined both the
small- and large-subunit ribosomal RNA sequence of Hyphochytrium
catenoides. Phylogenetic trees were constructed using the neighbor-joining
and maximum-parsimony method and include representatives of Chlorobionta,
Fungi, Metazoa, Alveolata, and all known Heterokonta. Our main conclusion
is that the hyphochytriomycetes form a monophyletic group with the
oomycetes and heterokont algae and that they are probably the closest
relatives of the oomycetes. However, the order of divergence between the
various heterokont algal phyla and the oomycete-hyphochytriomycete cluster
remains uncertain.

Although the use of patient-specific surgical guides has gained popularity over the past decade, little research has been done to examine in an objective and qualitative way the fit of such instruments. In this study, we have developed a model to predict the stability of a guide designed to fit on a supporting bone surface, thereby providing feedback on the translational and rotational stability of the device. The method was validated by comparing different guide designs with respect to their stability on the contact surface and comparing these results to those measured with a set of experiments. This validation experiment indicates that our stability model can be used to predict the stability of the fit of a surgical guide during the preoperative design process. 相似文献

Background
Nosocomial infections place a substantial burden on health care systems and represent one of the major issues in current public health, requiring notable efforts for its prevention. Understanding the dynamics of infection transmission in a hospital setting is essential for tailoring interventions and predicting the spread among individuals. Mathematical models need to be informed with accurate data on contacts among individuals.Methods and Findings
We used wearable active Radio-Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) to detect face-to-face contacts among individuals with a spatial resolution of about 1.5 meters, and a time resolution of 20 seconds. The study was conducted in a general pediatrics hospital ward, during a one-week period, and included 119 participants, with 51 health care workers, 37 patients, and 31 caregivers. Nearly 16,000 contacts were recorded during the study period, with a median of approximately 20 contacts per participants per day. Overall, 25% of the contacts involved a ward assistant, 23% a nurse, 22% a patient, 22% a caregiver, and 8% a physician. The majority of contacts were of brief duration, but long and frequent contacts especially between patients and caregivers were also found. In the setting under study, caregivers do not represent a significant potential for infection spread to a large number of individuals, as their interactions mainly involve the corresponding patient. Nurses would deserve priority in prevention strategies due to their central role in the potential propagation paths of infections.Conclusions
Our study shows the feasibility of accurate and reproducible measures of the pattern of contacts in a hospital setting. The obtained results are particularly useful for the study of the spread of respiratory infections, for monitoring critical patterns, and for setting up tailored prevention strategies.
