The classic methodology for estimating dose to man from environmental tritium assumes that all tritium, whether organically bound or free, enters directly into man's free body water compartment and is uniformly distributed as tritiated water. This methodology ignores the fact that organically bound tritium in foodstuffs may be directly assimilated in the bound compartment of tissues without previous oxidation. A four-compartment model consisting of a free body water compartment, two organic compartments, and a small, rapidly metabolizing compartment is proposed. The utility of this model lies in the ability to input organically bound tritium directly into organic compartments representing tissue solids. The model will be used to illustrate the potential importance of organically bound tritium to cumulative dose estimates. It is found that organically bound tritium in foodstuffs can increase cumulative total body dose by a factor of 1.7-4.5 times the free body water dose alone, depending on the bound-to-loose ratio of tritium in the diet.  相似文献

Inhibition of cellular respiration by treatment with the nonionic detergent Triton WR-1339 was found to be related to the cytotoxic response of cell to the surfactant. Respiration of sensitive cell lines (AV-3 and HeLa) markedly inhibited by Triton concentrations as low as 125 μgm/ml. Conditionally sensitive lines (BHK-21 and L-929) were affected by 500 μgm/ml while the respiration of insensitive cultures (primary rat and chick embryo cells) was unaffected by this concentration. Macrocyclon, a cyclic analogue of Triton, failed to alter the respiration rate of any of the above cell cultures. The levels of isocitric and succinic dehydrogenases in sensitive and conditionally sensitive cells were depressed within 2 hours after treatment with 500 μgm/ml of Triton was initiated and by 6 hours the activity was only 25% of the untreated controls. Similar results were obtained with mitochondrial preparations from these cells. Enzyme levels in insensitive cells were unaffected by Triton treatment. Mitochondrial damage was the most striking characteristic noted in treated cells examined by electron microscopy. The mitochondria were quite distorted and had lost most of their cristae formation. This mitochondrial damage was seen in all cell types examined although the rate at which it occurred varied. With sensitive cultures, damage was pronounced within 6 hours after the addition of Triton while mitochondria from conditionally sensitive cells were not grossly affected until 48 hours and they appeared to repair the damage following the removal of Triton.  相似文献

TwoVibrio species identified asV. damsela and a new sucrose-positiveVibrio sp.,V. carchariae sp. nov., were simultaneously isolated from a brown shark which died while being held in captivity at a large aquarium. Pathogenicity studies were subsequently conducted using a variety of elasmobranchs, including smooth dogfish and lemon sharks. Both bacterial strains proved pathogenic, causing death in nearly all of the elasmobranch hosts challenged. Virulence studies revealed that both bacterial strains were cytotoxic for Y-1 mouse adrenal cells. TheV. damsela strain was highly cytotoxic causing Y-1 cellular damage at culture supernatant dilutions up to 1 : 128. Both strains were hemolytic, but neither exhibited the Kanagawa phenomenon. They were both capable of urea hydrolysis, an interesting trait, considering that elasmobranchs retain large (ca 300 milliosmolal) urea concentration in their tissue.  相似文献

Studies of the effects of temperature and salinity on the survival of three enteric viruses (poliomyelitis type 1, echovirus-6, and coxsackievirus B-5) under controlled laboratory conditions and in situ indicate that temperature rather than salinity is the critical factor affecting their stability, in that the higher the temperature the more rapid was the loss of viral infectivity. In the laboratory studies, all three viruses were quite stable at 4 degrees C, with infectious virus still detectable after 46 weeks of incubation. In situ studies on virus survival in free-flowing estuarine or marine waters showed that, although the viruses were more labile in natural waters than in the laboratory studies, they persisted for several months, in some cases during the winter months. At all temperatures and salinities, coxsackievirus B-5 was the most stable, echovirus-6 was intermediate, and poliovirus 1 was the least stable of the viruses tested.  相似文献

Interplant nutrient transfer may be an important ecological process in grasslands, and may significantly influence plant neighborhood interactions. We investigated the potential for phosphorus transfer between the dominant grass Andropogon gerardii and several neighboring plant species in tallgrass prairie via a field 32PO4 labelling experiment. The mean amount of 32P received from donor shoots differed significantly among neighboring species and decreased with increasing distance from the donor. In general, forbs and cool-season C3 grasses received more labelled 32P than warm-season C4 grasses. Phosphorus transfer occurred over distances up to 0.5 m. The effects of species and distance on movement of phosphorus changed with increasing time after labelling. The relative mass of receiver and donor shoots did not affect amounts of 32P transfer. A benomyl fungicide treatment, applied to suppress mycorrhizal activity, likely did not affect existing vegetative hyphae and did not affect the amount of 32P transferred. These studies demonstrate that: (1) phosphorus is transferred among neighboring species in tallgrass prairie plant communities, (2) phosphorus may be transferred over significantly greater distances than reported in other grasslands, and (3) there is differential transfer among co-occurring species. Hypothesized mechanisms accounting for these patterns in tallgrass prairie include mycorrhizal hyphal interconnections and/or extensive and differential root and rhizosphere overlap among neighboring species.  相似文献

Many mammal and bird species respond to predator encounters with alarm vocalizations that generate risk‐appropriate responses in listeners. Two conceptual frameworks are typically applied to the information encoded in alarm calls and to associated anti‐predator behaviors. ‘Functionally referential’ alarm systems encode nominal classes or categories of risk in distinct call types that refer to distinct predation‐risk situations. ‘Risk‐based’ alarms encode graded or ranked threat‐levels by varying the production patterns of the same call types as the urgency of predation threat changes. Recent work suggests that viewing alarm‐response interactions as either referential or risk‐based may oversimplify how animals use information in decision‐making. Specifically, we explore whether graded alarm cues may be useful in classifying risks, supporting a referential decision‐making framework. We presented predator (hawk, owl, cat, snake) and control treatments to captive adult tufted titmice Baeolophus bicolor and recorded their vocalizations, which included ‘chick‐a‐dee’ mobbing calls (composed of chick and D notes), ‘seet’ notes, two types of contact notes (‘chip’, ‘chink’), and song. No single call type was uniquely associated with any treatment and the majority of acoustic measures varied significantly among treatments (46 of 60). The strongest models (ANOVA and classification tree analysis) grouped hawk with cat and owl, and control with snake, and were based on the number or proportion of a) chick and D notes per chick‐a‐dee call, b) chip versus chink notes produced following treatment exposure, and c) the frequency metrics of other note types. We conclude that (1) the predation‐threat information available in complex titmouse alarm calls was largely encoded in graded acoustic measures that were (2) numerous and variable across treatments and (3) could be used singly or in combinations for either ranking or classification of threats. We call attention to the potential use of mixed threat identification strategies, where risk‐based signal information may be used in referential decision‐making contexts.  相似文献
