Mongolia's Larix sibirica forests at the southern fringe of the Eurosiberian boreal forest belt are exposed not only to very low winter temperatures, but also to frequent summer droughts. It is not completely known how Siberian larch adapts to these stressors. We examined whether (i) these forests differ in their fine root bio- and necromass from more humid boreal forests further in the North and (ii) inter-annual fluctuations in fine root biomass are related to tree vitality. In two exceptionally dry summers, we found only 4–5 g DM m?2 of fine root biomass (in 0–20 cm depth), which is far less than typical conifer fine root biomass figures from boreal forests (c. 200–400 g m?2) and the lowest forest fine root biomass reported worldwide; in a moist summer, fine root biomass was 20 fold higher. In contrast to fine root biomass, both necromass and non-tree root mass were high in all three years. From the large increase of fine root biomass in the moist summer and the generally high root necromass, we conclude that drought-induced fine root dieback was the likely cause of the very small amount of live root mass in the dry summers. Larch fine roots seem to be more drought-sensitive than shoots, since marked needle loss did not occur under the extreme conditions.  相似文献

Summary Movement of radioactive auxins was analysed in corn coleoptile sections. The results support the idea that processes involved in the transport of indoleacetic acid (IAA) are specific for growth-promoting auxins.Inhibition of IAA transport by triiodobenzoic acid is caused by a reversible block of the exit; the auxin held back remains in the transport pool. The observed increase in immobilization may be a secondary effect caused by the increased concentration of free IAA in the tissue.Auxin molecules are most likely transported by anon-covalent mechanism. IAA and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) move through the cell and exit as free molecules. A search for a transient auxin complex, chaseable as required for any transport carrier intermediate, yielded negative results. No18O was lost from NAA labeled with18O in the carboxyl group during transport of the auxin through coleoptile tissue.After application of IAA to auxin-depleted tissue, the transport rate undergoes oscillations with a period length of ca. 25 min.The movement of the auxin 2.4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid which is usually sluggish, increased several times if some IAA was added. Auxin, thus, stimulates its own transport.A model is discussed in which auxin-binding to the plasma membrane and reversible changes of membrane conformation may provide a basis for active secretion and for the observed cooperativity. An enantiomerically pure (R)-2-methylpyrrolidine-based anilino squaraine crystallizes in two chiral polymorphs adopting a monoclinic C2 and an orthorhombic P212121 structure, respectively. By various thin-film preparation techniques, a control of the polymorph formation is targeted. The local texture of the resulting textured thin films is connected to the corresponding optical properties. Special attention is paid to an unusual Davydov splitting, the anisotropic chiroptical response arising from preferred out-of-plane orientation of the crystallites, and the impact of the polymorph specific excitonic coupling.  相似文献

Red-light-induced (via phytochrome) germination decreased with increasing numbers of turions per germination flask (overcrowding). Three hypotheses concerning the mechanism of this germination inhibition were tested, related to abscisic acid, ethylene, and oxygen deficiency: (i) Although abscisic acid is a powerful inhibitor of turion germination it had to be excluded as a cause, because abscisic acid was not secreted from turions into the nutrient solution, (ii) Ethylene (ethrel) strongly inhibited growth of newly formed sprouts, but germination response itself was not inhibited, (iii) Germination inhibition did not appear if short light pulses were substituted by continuous irradiation. It reappeared in the presence of the photosynthesis inhibitor 3-(3, 4-dichlorophenyl)-l, 1-dimethylurea, but it was not observed in aerated nutrient solutions, or when Petri dishes instead of Erlenmeyer flasks were used. Decreased oxygen concentrations in the nutrient solution were produced by turion respiration. Consequently, anaerobiosis within the nutrient solution caused by turion respiration was the reason for germination inhibition by overcrowding.  相似文献
