Background

Recent neuroimaging studies have revealed that putatively unimodal regions of visual cortex can be activated during auditory tasks in sighted as well as in blind subjects. However, the task determinants and functional significance of auditory occipital activations (AOAs) remains unclear.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We examined AOAs in an intermodal selective attention task to distinguish whether they were stimulus-bound or recruited by higher-level cognitive operations associated with auditory attention. Cortical surface mapping showed that auditory occipital activations were localized to retinotopic visual cortex subserving the far peripheral visual field. AOAs depended strictly on the sustained engagement of auditory attention and were enhanced in more difficult listening conditions. In contrast, unattended sounds produced no AOAs regardless of their intensity, spatial location, or frequency.

Conclusions/Significance

Auditory attention, but not passive exposure to sounds, routinely activated peripheral regions of visual cortex when subjects attended to sound sources outside the visual field. Functional connections between auditory cortex and visual cortex subserving the peripheral visual field appear to underlie the generation of AOAs, which may reflect the priming of visual regions to process soon-to-appear objects associated with unseen sound sources.  相似文献

The aromatic polyketide antibiotic, oxytetracycline (OTC), is produced by Streptomyces rimosus as an important secondary metabolite. High level production of antibiotics in Streptomycetes requires precursors and cofactors which are derived from primary metabolism; therefore it is exigent to engineer the primary metabolism. This has been demonstrated by targeting a key enzyme in the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) generation, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), which is encoded by zwf1 and zwf2. Disruption of zwf1 or zwf2 resulted in a higher production of OTC. The disrupted strain had an increased carbon flux through glycolysis and a decreased carbon flux through PPP, as measured by the enzyme activities of G6PDH and phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI), and by the levels of ATP, which establishes G6PDH as a key player in determining carbon flux distribution. The increased production of OTC appeared to be largely due to the generation of more malonyl-CoA, one of the OTC precursors, as observed in the disrupted mutants. We have studied the effect of zwf modification on metabolite levels, gene expression, and secondary metabolite production to gain greater insight into flux distribution and the link between the fluxes in the primary and secondary metabolisms.  相似文献

Abstract  Insecticide resistance monitoring using a Potter precision spray tower with discriminating concentration and log dose probability techniques underpins the Australian insecticide management strategy for Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande. Abamectin, acephate, chlorpyrifos, dichlorvos, dimethoate, endosulfan, fipronil, malathion, methamidophos methidathion, methiocarb, methomyl, pyrazophos and spinosad are recommended for use against F. occidentalis but abamectin, methiocarb and pyrazophos are the only chemicals where insecticide resistance has not been detected. Although not registered, chlorfenapyr was effective against F. occidentalis and should be pursued for that purpose. In contrast, chlorpyrifos, dichlorvos and malathion resistance were detected at low to moderate levels throughout the study period putting their sustainable use for F. occidentalis control in doubt . Although it appears that acephate, dimethoate, endosulfan, fipronil, methamidophos, methidathion and spinosad remain effective, some populations contained a small percentage of thrips that survived exposure to a concentration that killed 100% of the susceptible strain. Subsequent laboratory selection of one such population separately with fipronil and spinosad caused an increase in resistance to these insecticides. These products must now be considered at risk. This is the first report of fipronil or spinosad resistance in populations of F. occidentalis.  相似文献

A strain (WA) of Tetranychus urticae Koch was collected from apples in Western Australia following a reported field-control failure of tebufenpyrad. The WA strain had been exposed to five tebufenpyrad applications over four seasons. The tebufenpyrad resistance in the WA strain was confirmed at 63.29× which is the first reported instance of tebufenpyrad resistance in T. urticae. The most common complaint of older hearing impaired (OHI) listeners is difficulty understanding speech in the presence of noise. However, tests of consonant-identification and sentence reception threshold (SeRT) provide different perspectives on the magnitude of impairment. Here we quantified speech perception difficulties in 24 OHI listeners in unaided and aided conditions by analyzing (1) consonant-identification thresholds and consonant confusions for 20 onset and 20 coda consonants in consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) syllables presented at consonant-specific signal-to-noise (SNR) levels, and (2) SeRTs obtained with the Quick Speech in Noise Test (QSIN) and the Hearing in Noise Test (HINT). Compared to older normal hearing (ONH) listeners, nearly all unaided OHI listeners showed abnormal consonant-identification thresholds, abnormal consonant confusions, and reduced psychometric function slopes. Average elevations in consonant-identification thresholds exceeded 35 dB, correlated strongly with impairments in mid-frequency hearing, and were greater for hard-to-identify consonants. Advanced digital hearing aids (HAs) improved average consonant-identification thresholds by more than 17 dB, with significant HA benefit seen in 83% of OHI listeners. HAs partially normalized consonant-identification thresholds, reduced abnormal consonant confusions, and increased the slope of psychometric functions. Unaided OHI listeners showed much smaller elevations in SeRTs (mean 6.9 dB) than in consonant-identification thresholds and SeRTs in unaided listening conditions correlated strongly (r = 0.91) with identification thresholds of easily identified consonants. HAs produced minimal SeRT benefit (2.0 dB), with only 38% of OHI listeners showing significant improvement. HA benefit on SeRTs was accurately predicted (r = 0.86) by HA benefit on easily identified consonants. Consonant-identification tests can accurately predict sentence processing deficits and HA benefit in OHI listeners.  相似文献

Outcrossing and self‐fertilization are fundamental strategies of sexual reproduction, each with different evolutionary costs and benefits. Self‐fertilization is thought to be an evolutionary “dead‐end” strategy, beneficial in the short term but costly in the long term, resulting in self‐fertilizing species that occupy only the tips of phylogenetic trees. Here, we use volvocine green algae to investigate the evolution of self‐fertilization. We use ancestral‐state reconstructions to show that self‐fertilization has repeatedly evolved from outcrossing ancestors and that multiple reversals from selfing to outcrossing have occurred. We use three phylogenetic metrics to show that self‐fertilization is not restricted to the tips of the phylogenetic tree, a finding inconsistent with the view of self‐fertilization as a dead‐end strategy. We also find no evidence for higher extinction rates or lower speciation rates in selfing lineages. We find that self‐fertilizing species have significantly larger colonies than outcrossing species, suggesting the benefits of selfing may counteract the costs of increased size. We speculate that our macroevolutionary results on self‐fertilization (i.e., non‐tippy distribution, no decreased diversification rates) may be explained by the haploid‐dominant life cycle that occurs in volvocine algae, which may alter the costs and benefits of selfing.  相似文献

Citizen science can play an important role in school science education. Citizen science is particularly relevant to addressing current societal environmental sustainability challenges, as it engages the students directly with environmental science and gives students an understanding of the scientific process. In addition, it allows students to observe local representations of global challenges. Here, we report a citizen science programme designed to engage school‐age children in real‐world scientific research. The programme used standardized methods deployed across multiple schools through scientist–school partnerships to engage students with an important conservation problem: habitat for pollinator insects in urban environments. Citizen science programmes such as the programme presented here can be used to enhance scientific literacy and skills. Provided key challenges to maintain data quality are met, this approach is a powerful way to contribute valuable citizen science data for understudied, but ecologically important study systems, particularly in urban environments across broad geographical areas.  相似文献

Rabbit brain capillary endothelial cells treated with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate produce the metalloproteinases, procollagenase and prostromelysin, as up to 20% of their total secreted protein. However, little or no catalytic activity of these enzymes can be found after treatment with either trypsin or an organomercurial agent, which are able to activate the proenzymes in the medium from stimulated rabbit fibroblasts. We now have shown that enzyme activities of procollagenase and prostromelysin are revealed after conditioned medium is analyzed by gel filtration chromatography or by electrophoresis on sodium dodecyl sulfate-substrate gels. In both systems, the metalloproteinases were separated from metalloproteinase inhibitors. The major inhibitor of Mr = 30,000 from capillary endothelial cells was immunologically identical with the rabbit tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases. Two additional inhibitors of metalloproteinases at Mr = 22,000 and 19,000 were also observed. Inhibitors were present in the conditioned medium from rabbit fibroblasts in much lower quantities and were also qualitatively different. When gel filtration chromatography was used to remove the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases from medium conditioned by stimulated capillary endothelial cells, both activatable procollagenase and prostromelysin were readily demonstrable. These data suggest that endogenous inhibitors regulate the expression of metalloproteinases secreted by endothelial cells.  相似文献
