A particulate DNA polymerase activity in adult rat brain

A particulate fraction of adult rat brain (sucrose buoyant density 1.24 gm/ml) catalyzed the incorporation of [³H]dTTP into an acid-insoluble product in an endogenously templated reaction sensitive to ribonuclease pretreatment. Upon fractionation, this activity was identified in the cerebellum, pons, frontal lobes and base. The DNA polymerase present in these brain fractions exhibited a strong preference for the synthetic template dT_12–18·poly rA rather than dT_12–18·poly dA; dT₁₀ was completely inactive. Purification and equilibrium Cs₂SO₄ gradient centrifugation of the [³H]DNA product-endogenous template complex suggested that RNA was serving as primer for endogenous DNA synthesis.     

Die Anionenaustauschersubstanzen Aluminium- und Eisen (3)-hydroxyd-silikat-phosphat-humat Als Minerale Des Bodens

Zusammenfassung In wäßriger Lösung wurden Aluminium- oder Eisen(3)-Ionen bei Siedetemperatur mit Hydroxyl- und Silikat- oder Phosphat- oder Humat-Ionen unter ständiger Aufrechterhaltung bestimmter Mengenverhältnisse umgesetzt. In den entstandenen Niederschlägen wurden die Molarprozente an Hydroxyl-, Silikat-, Phosphat- und Humat-Ionen inweitem Bereich abhängig von den Konzentrationen dieser Ionen im Gleichgewicht gefunden. Daher sind diese Niederschläge als Anionenaustauscher anzusehen. Es wurde die Vermutung ausgesprochen, daß die Aluminium- und Eisen-Verbindungen des Bodens die gleichen Austauschersubstanzen darstellen, und versucht, diese Vermutung durch Besprechung einiger bodenkundlicher Befunde zu stützen. Es zeigte sich, daß der für die Pflanzenernährung wichtige, schnelle Anionenaustausch an diesen röntgenamorphen Austauschersubstanzen erfolgt, ebenso wie der Kationenaustausch über die in den 30er Jahren entdeckten, kristallinen Tonminerale verläuft.     

Tissue factor expression in newt iris coincides with thrombin activation and lens regeneration

Lens regeneration in adult salamanders occurs at the pupillary margin of the mid-dorsal iris where pigmented epithelial cells (PEC) re-enter the cell cycle and transdifferentiate into lens. It is not understood how the injury caused by removal of the lens (lentectomy) in one location is linked to initiating the response in a different spatial location (dorsal iris) and to this particular sector. We propose that the blood provides a link between the localised coagulation and signal transduction pathways that lead to regeneration. A transmembrane protein (tissue factor) is expressed in a striking patch-like domain in the dorsal iris of the newt that localises coagulation specifically to this location, but is not expressed in the axolotl, a related species that does not show thrombin activation after lentectomy and cannot regenerate its lens. Our hypothesis is that tissue factor expression localises the initiation of regeneration through the activation of thrombin and the recruitment of blood cells, leading to local growth factor release. This is the first example of gene expression in a patch of cells that prefigures the location of a regenerative response, and links the immune system with the initiation of a regenerative program.
