The upper Tennessee River drainage, which includes portions of the States of Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, supports an exceptionally diverse fish fauna. Recent reductions in abundance and geographic ranges of several freshwater fishes have promulgated the imposition of protective measures for about 115 species among the three states, with nearly half of those species occurring in the upper Tennessee River. Most protected species are darters (Percidae: Etheostomatinae) or minnows (Cyprinidae), and are typically small, benthic invertivores. Major impacts on the fish fauna have resulted from dams, introduced species, toxic spills, mining and agriculture. An important cumulative effect of these impacts is fragmentation of the watershed; nearly 40% of the riverine habitat in major tributaries is either impounded or altered by tailwater discharges. The isolation and stress imposed on tributaries of the river have caused and will continue to cause extirpations of fishes, mussels and other aquatic fauna. Numerous federal, state, and private organizations are co-operating in efforts to protect rare species and habitats, improve agricultural and coal-producing practices, and enforce regulations for industrial and municipal effluents.  相似文献

Inclusion bodies were previously found in Papanicolaou smears of patients infected by the human papillomavirus (HPV). To ascertain their origin, 12 biopsies from patients with colposcopic evidence of papillomatous lesions were studied by cytology and electron microscopy. In several instances, koilocytotic atypias and electron-dense masses included within epithelial cells were observed. Some of these epithelial cells appeared to be surrounded by other cells in a sort of concentric arrangement. The electron-dense masses were composed of intermediate filaments, vacuoles and electron-dense material. They seemed to be dyskeratotic cells. They can be compared with apoptotic bodies and may be related to a disturbance of the involucrin expression caused by the HPV infection.  相似文献

The variations of the talar articular facets in 176 calcanei were studied and classified. Three types were considered: type A = calcanei with two articular facets for the talar head, with four subtypes; type B = calcanei with one articular facet for the talar head, and two subtypes, and type C = unique articular facies in the superior surface of the calcaneus for the talus. We found 53% (94 cases) type B calcanei and 46% (82 cases) type A calcanei. No calcanei of type C were seen.  相似文献

Summary The calcium ingestion of Malabar Giant Squirrels Ratufa indica (Sciuridae) was examined at two sites, Magod and Bhimashankar, in western India. In females at Magod a positive correlation was found between rates of calcium ingestion from food resources and the contribution of those resources to the daily diet. This relationship was true for all females at Magod irre-spective of their reproductive condition. This relationship was neither significant for males at the same site nor for both sexes at Bhimashankar. A differential requirement for calcium between the sexes and the occurrence of higher rates of calcium ingestion or the probable presence of more easily digestible calcium at Bhimashankar are postulated to explain the observed phenomenon. Mature leaves and bark appear to be reliable sources of calcium at these sites.  相似文献

Reperfusion of rat kidney submitted to temporal ischaemia induces a decrease in glutathione content. Lipid peroxidation is not detected in kidney homogenates but microsomes obtained after periods of reperfusion longer than 60 minutes show increased malondialdehyde values correlated with high oxygen consumption and superoxide free radical generation. Microsomes obtained from kidneys submitted to 15 or 60 minutes of reperfusion are resistant to NADPH-induced lipid peroxidation but after 120 minutes of reperfusion an increased lipid peroxidative response is observed. Although the mechanism of the protection found in microsomes against the induction of oxidative stress in the first 60 minutes of reperfusion is unknown, it is postulated that this subcellular fraction plays an important role in the oxidative stress observed after longer periods of reperfusion.  相似文献

Membrane fractions highly enriched in chicken lens MIP (MIP28) were found to form ion channels when incorporated into planar lipid bilayers. The channels displayed prominent unitary conductances of about 60 and 290 pS in symmetric 150 mm KCl solution and were slightly anion selective. For both depolarizing and hyperpolarizing voltages, voltage sensitivity of the MIP28-induced conductance could be fit by a Boltzmann relation, symmetric around zero mV, with V 0 = 18.5 mV, n= 4.5 and g min/g max= 0.17. Channel properties were not appreciably altered by pH in the range of 5.8 to 7, although channel incorporation was observed to occur more frequently at lower pH values. Calcium, at millimolar concentrations, decreased the channel mean open time. Partial proteolysis of MIP28 to yield MIP21 did not appreciably affect single-channel conductance or voltage sensitivity of the reconstituted channels. MIP28 was not phosphorylated by cAMP dependent protein kinase (PKA). Although unitary conductance and selectivity of the chicken MIP channel are similar to those reported for the bovine MIP (MIP26), the voltage sensitivity of MIP28 was higher than that of the bovine homologue, and voltage sensitivity of MIP28 was not modulated by treatments previously shown to affect MIP26 voltage gating (partial proteolysis and protein phosphorylation by PKA: (Ehring et al., 1990). The existence of such strikingly different functional properties in highly homologous channel isoforms may provide a useful system for exploration of the structure-function relations of MIP channels. Recurrent ocular herpes is an insoluble problem for the clinician. As cellular immunity plays an important role in controlling herpes relapses, and other studies have shown the efficacy of HSV-specific transfer factor (TF) for the treatment of herpes patients, an open clinical trial was undertaken in 134 patients (71 keratitis, 29 kerato-uveitis, 34 uveitis) suffering from recurrent ocular herpetic infections. The mean duration of the treatment was 358 days, and the entire follow-up period 189121 before, and 64062 days after TF treatment. The cell-mediated immune response to the viral antigens, evaluated by the lymphocyte stimulation test (LST) and the leucocyte migration test (LMT) (P<0.001), was significantly increased by the TF treatment. The total number of relapses was decreased significantly during/after TF treatment, dropping from 832 before, to 89 after treatment, whereas the cumulative relapse index (RI) dropped, during the same period, from 13.2 to 4.17 (P<0.0001). No side effects were observed. It is concluded that patients with relapsing ocular herpes can benefit from treatment with HSV-specific TF.  相似文献

Examination of 111 peacock wrasse [Symphodus tinea (L.)] and 97 brown wrasse ( Labrus merula L.) from the Valencian coast (Spain) yielded 24 metazoan parasite species (11 Digenea, three Cestoda, four Nematoda. one Acanlhocephala, five Crustacea). Eighteen species were from 5. tinea and 17 from L. merula; 11 of the 24 species were common to both hosts. Brillouin's diversity index, was applied to fully censused parasite infracommunities. This is the first time that all the metazoan parasites (internal and external) in any position in the host have been analysed for diversity. High values of prevalence, intensity, and diversity parameters indicate that these labrid fishes support diverse parasite communities. This may be due to their diverse diet, mainly marine invertebrates which are possible intermediate hosts; they also support certain netnatodes and crustaceans which have direct life-cycle.  相似文献

Seed of Stlosanthes humilis both have hard integuments and display physiological dormancy, the latter being lost during post-harvest ageing. Ethrel and l-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) partially released scarified young seed from physiological dormancy. Cobalt and silver ions and abscisic acid inhibited germination of scarified non-dormant seed. Abscisic acid also inhibited germination of voung seed promoted by ACC. Thiourea and ethrel plus benzyladenine showed the greatest efficacy in breaking seed dormancy.  相似文献
