Studies were carried out on the predilection sites of Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae in experimentally infected arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) and silver foxes (Vulpes vulpes) reared in cages. The highest number of larvae per gramme tissue was found in the muscles of the legs, eyes, diaphragm, and tongue. The influence of a 12-h pretreatment with either NO3-, NH4+, glutamine, or glutamate (300 [mu]M) on the apparent induction of NO3- uptake was investigated. Net fluxes of NO3- into roots of intact, 7-d-old barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv Prato) seedlings in solution culture were estimated from ion activity gradients measured with NO3--selective microelectrodes in the unstirred layer of solution immediately external to the root surface. Control plants, pretreated with nitrogen-free nutrient solution, exhibited a sigmoidal increase in net NO3- uptake, reaching a maximum rate between 8 and 9 h after first exposure to NO3-. Plants pretreated with NH4+ or Glu exhibited a delay of several hours in the initiation of the induction process after they had been exposed to NO3-. In Gln-pretreated plants, however, responses ranged from no delay of the induction process to delays comparable to those observed following NH4+ or Glu pretreatments. Only treatment with NO3-resulted in the induction of NO3- uptake, whereas pretreatments with NH4+, Gln, or Glu tended to delay induction of NO3- uptake upon subsequent exposure to NO3-. 相似文献

Faecal samples from asymptomatic dairy cows and calves from a farm on the Island Falster, Denmark, were examined by a sucrose gradient flotation technique. Giardia cysts were found in 7.6% of the 92 samples, and estimated cyst excretion rates ranged from 50-200 cysts per gram faeces. Given that Giardia has the potential to cause clinical disease in cattle and to be transmitted to other animal species and humans, finding the parasite in cattle may be of major epidemiological significance. Future work should focus on elucidating the pathogenicity, transmission patterns and the genetic structure of Giardia populations in cattle in Denmark. 相似文献

A cloned human cutaneous lymphoma Hut102-B2 with helper T-cell phenotype (Leu1+, Leu2a?, Leu3a+) was found to produce substantial quantities of interferon (IFN) on induction with the phorbol ester, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA). Whereas only trace amounts of IFN were secreted by Hut102-B2 cells spontaneously, up to 8000 laboratory units/ ml of IFN were synthesized under the optimal conditions of TPA induction. Characterization studies including neutralization by specific antisera to IFNs and determination of the activities in human and bovine cells disclosed that the IFN produced by Hut102-B2 cells exposed to TPA was a mixture of immune IFN (IFN-γ) and leukocyte IFN (IFN-α) made in approximately equal amounts in terms of antiviral activity. 相似文献

Net fluxes of NH4+ and NO3− into roots of 7-day-old barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv Prato) seedlings varied both with position along the root axis and with time. These variations were not consistent between replicate plants; different roots showed unique temporal and spatial patterns of uptake. Axial scans of NH4+ and NO3− net fluxes were conducted along the apical 7 centimeters of seminal roots of intact barley seedlings in solution culture using ion-selective microelectrodes in the unstirred layer immediately external to the root surface. Theoretically derived relationships between uptake and concentration gradients, combined with experimental observations of the conditions existing in our experimental system, permitted evaluation of the contribution of bulk water flow to ion movement in the unstirred layer, as well as a measure of the spatial resolution of the microelectrode flux estimation technique. Nitrification and denitrification were studied in a millimeterscale microenvironment using a two-phase system with a liquid manure-saturated layer. Samples consisted of liquid cattle manure and air-dried soil stabilized with silica gel, placed between two aerobic soil phases with a water content near field capacity. A high potential for NH4
+ oxidation developed within 0–2 mm distance from the interface, and NH4
+ diffused only 10–20 mm into the soil. Some NH4
+ was probably immobilized by microorganisms in the soil between 0 and 4 days, after which nitrification was the only sink for NH4
+. A potential for denitrification developed within the manure-saturated zone. Maximum rates of both potential and actual denitrification were recorded by Day 4, but denitrification continued for at least 2–3 weeks. The potential for nitrification peaked after 14 days. When the pH of the manure was adjusted to 5.5, nitrification was reduced close to the interface, and NH4
+ penetrated further into the soil before it was oxidized. The pH adjustment had an inhibitory effect on denitrification: Both potential and actual rates of denitrification were almost eliminated for several days. The size of the manure-saturated layer strongly affected denitrification losses. With layers of 8 and 16 mm thickness, losses equivalent to 33 and 40% of the original NH4

F(ab′)2 anti-μ, as well as anti-δ and anti-γ heavy chains have been found to induce strong increases in the influx of 86Rb+ (a potassium analogue) in cell suspensions from a proportion of human lymphomas staining monoclonally for B cells. The specificity of the response corresponded to the surface immunoglobulin (sIg) isotype present on lymphoma cells. Even when carried out under closely analogous conditions, no relationship between capping and 86Rb+ influx was observed. On the other hand, an association between 86Rb+ influx and mitogenic response to anti-immunoglobulin (anti-Ig) was observed with concordant results in 19 out of 21 comparisons made. These findings suggest that 86Rb+ influx, which appears to be associated with mitogenic signals, and capping may arise as independent phenomena even when elicited through the same membrane receptor (sIg). 相似文献
