Background
Nerve transfers are commonly employed in the treatment of brachial plexus injuries. We report the use of a new donor for transfer, the platysma motor branch.Methods
A patient with complete avulsion of the brachial plexus and phrenic nerve paralysis had the suprascapular nerve neurotized by the accessory nerve, half of the hypoglossal nerve transferred to the musculocutaneous nerve, and the platysma motor branch connected to the medial pectoral nerve.Results
The diameter of both the platysma motor branch and the medial pectoral nerve was around 2 mm. Eight years after surgery, the patient recovered 45° of abduction. Elbow flexion and shoulder adduction were rated as M4, according to the BMC. There was no deficit after the use of the above-mentioned nerves for transfer. Volitional control was acquired for independent function of elbow flexion and shoulder adduction.Conclusion
The use of the platysma motor branch seems promising. This nerve is expendable; its section led to no deficits, and the relearning of motor control was not complicated. Further anatomical and clinical studies would help to clarify and confirm the usefulness of the platysma motor branch as a donor for nerve transfer. 相似文献142.

Cryptochromes (Cry) have been suggested to form the basis of light-dependent magnetic compass orientation in birds. However, to function as magnetic compass sensors, the cryptochromes of migratory birds must possess a number of key biophysical characteristics. Most importantly, absorption of blue light must produce radical pairs with lifetimes longer than about a microsecond. Cryptochrome 1a (gwCry1a) and the photolyase-homology-region of Cry1 (gwCry1-PHR) from the migratory garden warbler were recombinantly expressed and purified from a baculovirus/Sf9 cell expression system. Transient absorption measurements show that these flavoproteins are indeed excited by light in the blue spectral range leading to the formation of radicals with millisecond lifetimes. These biophysical characteristics suggest that gwCry1a is ideally suited as a primary light-mediated, radical-pair-based magnetic compass receptor. 相似文献

LC-MS/MS analysis on a linear ion trap LTQ mass spectrometer, combined with data processing, stringent, and sequence-similarity database searching tools, was employed in a layered manner to identify proteins in organisms with unsequenced genomes. Highly specific stringent searches (MASCOT) were applied as a first layer screen to identify either known (i.e. present in a database) proteins, or unknown proteins sharing identical peptides with related database sequences. Once the confidently matched spectra were removed, the remainder was filtered against a nonannotated library of background spectra that cleaned up the dataset from spectra of common protein and chemical contaminants. The rectified spectral dataset was further subjected to rapid batch de novo interpretation by PepNovo software, followed by the MS BLAST sequence-similarity search that used multiple redundant and partially accurate candidate peptide sequences. Importantly, a single dataset was acquired at the uncompromised sensitivity with no need of manual selection of MS/MS spectra for subsequent de novo interpretation. The Hardangervidda in southern Norway, the largest mountain plateau in Europe, has thousands of lakes and streams, mainly
between 1000 and 1300 m above sea level, where brown trout is the only fish species. To describe the current genetic diversity
of brown trout in this area, a total of 863 fish from 20 lakes were genotyped with eleven microsatellites. Most diversity
is within lake populations, but diversity among geographical groups and populations within groups was significant, too. Neighbor-joining,
principle coordinate analysis and Bayesian clustering show three major geographic groups in accordance with the river systems.
Bias was caused by recent stocking in two lakes. Low/no genetic differentiation among some populations indicates that intermixing
is common when lakes are well-connected, as was also shown by assignment test. We recommend preserving the genetic diversity
of brown trout in this unique area by managing stocking in lake systems according to genetic structure. 相似文献

The plastid-encoded psaJ gene encodes a hydrophobic low-molecular-mass subunit of photosystem I (PSI) containing one transmembrane helix. Homoplastomic transformants with an inactivated psaJ gene were devoid of PSI-J protein. The mutant plants were slightly smaller and paler than wild-type because of a 13% reduction in chlorophyll content per leaf area caused by an approximately 20% reduction in PSI. The amount of the peripheral antenna proteins, Lhca2 and Lhca3, was decreased to the same level as the core subunits, but Lhca1 and Lhca4 were present in relative excess. The functional size of the PSI antenna was not affected, suggesting that PSI-J is not involved in binding of light-harvesting complex I. The specific PSI activity, measured as NADP(+) photoreduction in vitro, revealed a 55% reduction in electron transport through PSI in the mutant. No significant difference in the second-order rate constant for electron transfer from reduced plastocyanin to oxidized P700 was observed in the absence of PSI-J. Instead, a large fraction of PSI was found to be inactive. Immunoblotting analysis revealed a secondary loss of the luminal PSI-N subunit in PSI particles devoid of PSI-J. Presumably PSI-J affects the conformation of PSI-F, which in turn affects the binding of PSI-N. This together renders a fraction of the PSI particles inactive. Thus, PSI-J is an important subunit that, together with PSI-F and PSI-N, is required for formation of the plastocyanin-binding domain of PSI. Habitats vary in food resources with carnivores often being prey limited, but it is unclear whether habitats facilitate a nutritionally balanced diet. Two paradigms in nutritional ecology, ecological stoichiometry and nutritional geometry, predict that carnivores are limited mainly by protein or lipid, respectively. Using the carabid beetle Anchomenus dorsalis and 10 other predatory beetles from agricultural fields, we developed and tested two simple procedures for quantifying macronutrient‐specific habitat conditions without requiring information about the natural prey. Both procedures assume that predators forage for nutrients rather than specific prey. Our results show that 10 of 11 species were food limited. Five species were lipid limited and one species was protein limited in the field. Co‐existing predator species showed considerable segregation of fundamental macronutritional niches. A linear relationship between specific nutrient limitation and the target lipid:protein (L:P) intake ratio indicates that species with high L:P target are more protein limited while species with low L:P target are more lipid limited. The study illustrates how species within a natural assemblage vary in nutritional niche and in specific nutrient limitation. 相似文献
