The little-known prepleistocene Lake Indawgyi (Myanmar) is shown to harbour an endemic pelagicEodiaptomus species, described herein. The area around the lake is inhabited by another species in the same genus. Marine algae of the genus Nannochloropsis are promising producers of biofuel precursors and nutraceuticals and are also harvested commercially for aquaculture feed. We have used quick-freeze, deep-etch electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and carbohydrate analyses to characterize the architecture of the Nannochloropsis gaditana (strain CCMP 526) cell wall, whose recalcitrance presents a significant barrier to biocommodity extraction. The data indicate a bilayer structure consisting of a cellulosic inner wall (∼75% of the mass balance) protected by an outer hydrophobic algaenan layer. Cellulase treatment of walls purified after cell lysis generates highly enriched algaenan preparations without using the harsh chemical treatments typically used in algaenan isolation and characterization. Nannochloropsis algaenan was determined to comprise long, straight-chain, saturated aliphatics with ether cross-links, which closely resembles the cutan of vascular plants. Chemical identification of >85% of the isolated cell wall mass is detailed, and genome analysis is used to identify candidate biosynthetic enzymes. 相似文献

Objective: To examine the effects of a cafeteria diet and a chronic treatment with melanocortin agonist (MTII) on mature weight-stable female rats. Research Methods and Procedures: Ex-breeder Chbb:Thom rats (350 to 400 g) were divided into two groups: highly palatable food (HPF) and normal rat chow (RC). Both groups had ab libitum access to rat chow. The HPF group had access to chocolate bars, cookies, cheese, and nuts (∼20 g/d). After 21 days, the rats in each group were then divided into control and treated groups. Mini-pumps delivering saline or MTII (1 mg/kg per day) for minimally 28 days were implanted. Oxygen consumption was measured for 17 days in a second group of rats implanted with mini-pumps containing MTII (1 mg/kg per day) or saline. Results: HPF rats ate less (<50%) rat chow than RC rats. After 20 days, the HPF group had reached a plateau and weighed significantly more (p < 0.005) than the RC group (411.7 ± 9.3 g; n = 17 vs. 365.1 ± 9.4 g; n = 16). HPF rats and RC rats receiving MTII reduced their pellet intake and body weight in the initial 2 weeks of treatment (day 14, RC-saline: −1.6 ± 1.8 g; RC-MTII, −22.5 ± 3.7 g; HPF-saline, −7.1 ± 1.7 g; HPF-MTII, −30.7 ± 4.8 g). Subsequently, pellet intake returned to pre-implantation values, although body weights remained reduced in both HPF and RC groups. Oxygen consumption was increased in rats treated with MTII. Discussion: This suggests that MTII initially reduced body weight by limiting food intake; however, maintenance of weight is most likely due to increased energy expenditure under conditions of normal and highly palatable diets in mature animals. 相似文献

Early life is a critical phase of the life cycle of animals and is attracting increased attention because little information is available on the behaviour of young individuals during this period. Behaviour during early life is probably influenced by the environmental conditions encountered by young animals, but data on intraspecific variation between breeding sites during this crucial period of life are limited. Here we study variability in the foraging behaviour of juveniles and adults in three colonies of a pantropical seabird, the Red-footed Booby Sula sula. Both adults and juveniles were measured and fitted with GPS loggers in three remote islands: Genovesa (Galapagos, Eastern Pacific Ocean), Europa (Western Indian Ocean) and Surprise (New Caledonia, Western Pacific Ocean). Foraging behaviour was compared between age-classes, sex and colonies by examining trip characteristics, different behaviours at sea, potential associations between individuals and morphological characteristics. Compared with adults, juveniles conducted shorter trips that were restricted to around the colony, especially on Genovesa (max. range: 203.4 ± 125.1 km and 3.6 ± 3.1 km, respectively). Juveniles appeared more constrained by poor flight skills and experience rather than by their morphology. Adults travelled 45% of the time during at-sea trips, whereas juveniles spent a a lower proportion of time travelling but foraged more often using an ‘area-restricted search’ behaviour, potentially training to catch prey. Associations between juveniles were commonly detected in the three colonies and occurred mostly during foraging, suggesting that social learning is an important strategy. Variability of morphometric measurements in both adults and juveniles was high between sites, with larger birds found on Genovesa. These results suggest that adaptations to local environmental conditions are already visible in their early life. Future studies should continue to investigate the behavioural flexibility of juvenile birds to better understand the effect of local environmental conditions during this critical stage of life. 相似文献

Summary -Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is a natural compound of mammalian brain synthesized from GABA. The characteristics of its synthesis, transport, release, distribution and turnover, in addition to the presence of a high affinity binding site for this substance in brain are in favor of a modulator role for GHB. The effects of hydrolytic enzymes on the specific binding capacity of GHB have been studied in the present work. Phospholipases A2 and C, neuraminidase and Pronase markedly decrease GHB binding to crude synaptosomal membranes from rat brain. This effect is time and enzyme concentration dependent. Trypsin, under the conditions employed, is less active. The inhibitory effects of phospholipases is correlated with phospholipid hydrolysis. Lysophospholipids, in the absence of bovine fatty acid free serum albumin partially inhibit GHB binding. The action of neuraminidase has been followed by sialic acid release and modifications of the ganglioside profile. The effects of phospholipase C and of neuraminidase are completely different to those on GABA binding sites. These results represent further data concerning the molecular existence of specific GHB binding sites on rat brain membranes.Abbreviations GHB

The organization of actin microfilaments was studied by immunofluorescence in protoplasts isolated from sunflower hypocotyls and cultured in an agarose matrix. Removal of the cell wall completely disrupted the actin cytoskeleton, which became progressively reorganized into cortical microfilament arrays and actin cables during protoplast culture. Treatment of protoplasts with arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (Arg-Gly-Asp) motif-containing peptides, to inhibit putative cell contacts with the agarose matrix, strongly affected this repair process: microfilament elongation and cable formation were inhibited and the connectivity between the cortical network and the perinuclear basket was lost. Furthermore, embryoid formation induced by agarose embedding was reduced. Similar effects were observed with a short treatment with latrunculin B, known to disrupt actin microfilaments. These results indicate that the actin network is involved in the signalling process that leads to polarity acquisition and embryoid determination in agarose-embedded protoplasts. 相似文献

Coloration of phyllopods varies from place to place and from one life stage to another. It ranges from translucent or whitish through gray, blue, green, orange, and reddish. Here, we present experimental evidence for a food- dependent color pattern inThamnocephalus platyurus Packard. The presence or absence of the synthetic pigment trans — — carotene in a baker's yeast diet was the controlling factor. All the 24 old larvae used in the experiment were whitish in color. From day 6 until the end the experiment (day 11), 100% of the shrimps under a diet with synthetic trans — — carotene (treatment 1) exhibited a characteristic color pattern which consisted of an orange color in the cercopods, and in all theracopods; the rest of the body exhibited no particular color. In comparison, 100% of the shrimps under a diet without synthetic trans — — carotene (treatment 2) were whitish throughout the body. In females from treatment 1, the ovaries and oocytes were green-bluish, while in females from treatment 2 the ovaries and oocytes were whitish. No significant differences in survival and growth were found, except that at day 9, there was a significant difference in growth, the females with the synthetic trans — — carotene group growing faster. 相似文献

Five light-mantled sooty albatrosses (Phoebetria palpebrata) breeding at Macquarie Island were tracked with miniaturised satellite transmitters during foraging trips of the incubation period. Birds moved rapidly to specific sectors of the Southern Ocean, where they spent several days foraging before returning to their nests. These specific sectors were at an average distance of 1516 km from Macquarie Island and located in pelagic Antarctic waters, mostly along the Antarctic continent. The maximum foraging range was in average 1721 km and the total distance covered by two birds for which there were complete tracks was 6463 and 6975 km. This study confirms previous suggestions that light-mantled sooty albatrosses are able to forage in the waters of the high Antarctic while breeding in the sub-Antarctic. The implications of the extreme separation of feeding zones from nesting grounds, in terms of conservation and life-history strategies, are discussed. 相似文献

A new galactose-specific lectin was purified from seeds of a Caesalpinoideae plant, Bauhinia variegata, by affinity chromatography on lactose-agarose. Protein extracts haemagglutinated rabbit and human erythrocytes (native and

We present a novel topological classification of RNA secondary structures with pseudoknots. It is based on the topological genus of the circular diagram associated to the RNA base-pair structure. The genus is a positive integer number whose value quantifies the topological complexity of the folded RNA structure. In such a representation, planar diagrams correspond to pure RNA secondary structures and have zero genus, whereas non-planar diagrams correspond to pseudoknotted structures and have higher genus. The topological genus allows for the definition of topological folding motifs, similar in spirit to those introduced and commonly used in protein folding. We analyze real RNA structures from the databases Worldwide Protein Data Bank and Pseudobase and classify them according to their topological genus. For simplicity, we limit our analysis by considering only Watson-Crick complementary base pairs and G-U wobble base pairs. We compare the results of our statistical survey with existing theoretical and numerical models. We also discuss possible applications of this classification and show how it can be used for identifying new RNA structural motifs. 相似文献
