Dynamics of the sit-to-stand movement

The strategies of the sit-to-stand movement are investigated by describing the movement in terms of the topology of an associated phase diagram. Kinematic constraints are applied to describe movement sequences, thus reducing the dimension of the phase space. This dimensional reduction allows us to apply theorems of topological dynamics for two-dimensional systems to arrive at a classification of six possible movement strategies, distinguished by the topology of their corresponding phase portrait. Since movement is treated in terms of topological structure rather than specific trajectories, individual variations are automatically included, and the approach is by nature model independent. Pathological movement is investigated, and this method clarifies how subtle abnormalities in movement lead to difficulties in achieving a stable stance upon rising from a seated position. Historical biogeography and morphological differentiation ofStreptocephalus torvicornis (Waga) since the Würm III-glaciation

We argue that the Würm III glaciation eradicated possible European populations ofS. torvicornis, and that today, a reconquest of Europe takes place on two fronts.A western wave has reached the Pyrenees, an eastern one now occupies most of eastern and northern Europe. The western route probably started in the Maghreb, the eastern one in the Levant and the Ponto-Caspian. Animals in the west had to move north by crossing, at right angles, a series of east-west oriented river valleys and progressed slowly; animals in the east could move up river valleys extending north-east, and moved quickly. Italy was not occupied, becauseS.torvicornis is a warm stenotherm, and by the time the climate had warmed sufficiently for it to reach the southern shore of the mediterranean (ca 6000 BP), the gap with Italy was probably too large for a crossing. Cold-loving species (of the generaBranchipus, Chirocephalus) conversely, and could freely flow across the Central Mediterranean at low sea-levels (ca 12000 BP), and now occur in Italy (and the rest of Europe) as well as in Northern Africa.A prediction of our hypothesis is that the pioneer populations in Spain and Central Europe should have been isolated longest. Thisis tested and confirmed by their comparative morphology, and two subspecies,S. t. torvicornis andS. t. bucheti are reinstated.A gap across the Nile Valley where onlyS. rubricaudatus seems to occur, deserves further study.     

On the continental Copepod fauna of Morocco

A series of samples, collected in different parts of Morocco, contained 26 species and one subspecies of Copepoda. Ten among these are new to the fauna of Morocco and one is new to Science. Two species (Eucyclops hadjebensis Kiefer and Mixodiaptomus laciniatus atlantis Kiefer) are endemic to Morocco; Afrocyclops gibsoni Brady and Thermocyclops schuurmanae Kiefer are Ethiopan species. The former reaches its limit of Northern extent East of the Atlas mountains; the latter is a pluvial relict. The remaining species have either a cosmopolitan, circummediterranean or North-African distribution, with the exception of Cyclops abyssorum mauretaniae which is a southern element of the Eurasiatic genus Cyclops. Its taxonomical status is reviewed in some detail. Thermocyclops infrequens Kiefer is synonymized with T. schuurmanae Kiefer. It is concluded that the largest gaps in our knowledge of the Copepoda of Morocco are now in the group of the Harpacticoida.Contribution no. 14 of the biological expedition of the University of Gent (Belgium) to Morocco, July–August 1971     

Cyst hatching in Anostraca accelerated by retinoic acid,amplified by Calcium Ionophore A23187, and inhibited by Calcium-channel blockers

Cyst hatching, under standardized conditions, of the Anostracan species Thamnocephalus platyurus and Streptocephalus dichotomus was significantly accelerated but not increased by applying the morphogen retinoic acid (RA). Cyst hatching was enhanced but not accelerated by artificially increasing the inflow of Ca²⁺ to the embryonic cells, using Calcium Ionophore A 23 187. Cyst hatching was accelerated and amplified, to a level in excess of the summed effects of each treatment, by a combined application of RA and ionophore. It was inhibited almost quantitatively by the Calcium-channel blockers Nifedipin and Verapamil. The significance of these findings is discussed.     

Protection against acute paraquat toxicity by ambroxol

An expression vector for G-CSF, pASLB3-3, was constructed and introduced into Namalwa KJM-1 cells (Hosoi et al., 1988), and cells resistant to 100 nM of methotrexate (MTX) were obtained. Among them, the highest producer, clone SC57, was selected and the productivity of this clone was further characterized. The maximal production of G-CSF was at the most 1.8 g/ml/day using a 25 cm² tissue culture flask, even though the cell number was above 7×10⁵ cells/ml. The limiting factors at high density were analyzed as the deficiency of nutrients, such as glucose, cysteine and serine, and pH control. The depression of specific G-CSF productivity per cell under the batch culture conditions was overcome by using a perfusion culture system, Biofermenter^TM (Sato, 1983) with modifications of nutrients supplementation by a dialysis membrane and/or dissolved oxygen (DO) supplementation by microsilicone fibers. ITPSGF medium was modified to elevate concentrations of amino acids and glucose by 2.0- and 2.5-times, respectively. Under the control of pH at 7.4 and DO at 3 ppm, the specific G-CSF productivity was not depressed even at high cell density (above 1×10⁷ cells/ml), and the amount of G-CSF reached 41 g/ml. Differential mitotic rates and patterns of growth in compartments in the Drosophila wing

In the wing disks of Drosophila slowly dividing cells of Minute mutations are progressively eliminated from Minute/Minute⁺ mosaic compartments by a process known as cell competition. From a study of two different Minutes we show here that the intensity of competition is greater in the more extreme Minute with the slowest rate of cell division. The way in which the more rapidly growing Minute⁺ clones grow and overcome the surrounding Minute cells is described and cell competition is shown to be a result of local interactions between slow- and faster-growing cells.     

Androgen on the estrogen receptor I — Binding and in vivo nuclear translocation

In the immature rat uterus, high concentrations of androgens competed specifically with estradiol on the estrogen receptor (RE). This competition was stereospecific for C₁₉ steroids bearing a 17β and/or 3 hydroxyl group. Very low affinity ligands, such as testosterone, could not compete with estradiol at equilibrium but decreased the association rate of estradiol on its receptor. High doses (> 0.4mg) of 5 α aihydrotestosterone provoked $\text{in vivo}$ as $\text{in vitro}$ the nuclear translocation of RE. The nuclear receptor thus formed displayed the same 5.2 S sedimentation constant as that induced by estradiol. We conclude that the weak affinity binding of androgens to the estrogen receptor is sufficient to induce its nuclear translocation $\text{in vivo}$ provided androgen concentration is high enough in uterus to occupy the estradiol binding site. Conversely, progesterone which does not bind RE could not provoke its nuclear translocation.     

Influence of clay minerals on sorption of bacteriolytic enzymes

Myxobacteria presumably produce extracellular bacteriolytic enzymes when they are growing in soil. In order to study their ecological significance, adsorption experiments were performed with lytic enzymes produced byMyxococcus virescens in casitone media. Different soils as well as montmorillonite and kaolinite can rapidly adsorb the bacteriolytic but not the proteolytic enzymes. About 1 gm of montmorillonite per liter of cell-free culture solution is enough for the adsorption of 97% of the bacteriolytic enzymes. The adsorption per unit weight is about 100 times greater on montmorillonite than on kaolinite. About 40% of the adsorbed enzymes can be eluted with solutions of high pH or high ionic strength. The only desorbed bacteriolytic enzyme is the alanyl-∈-N-lysine endopeptidase.     

Staining of Some Specific Regions of Human Chromosomes,particularly the Secondary Constriction of No. 9

SEVERAL procedures have been described recently which produce specific patterns of differential staining in human chromosomes^1–9. Techniques which involve DNA denaturation and reannealing reveal deeply stained areas on centromere and secondary constriction regions which have been equated with constitutive heterochromatin⁹.
