The results of breeding Cercopithecus aethiops under time-mated laboratory conditions and analysis of total estrogen, progesterone, and LH concentrations in plasma during the menstrual cycle and plasma estrogen and progesterone concentrations during pregnancy indicate that this species is a suitable alternative for the rhesus monkey as a model for investigations of reproductive function in man.  相似文献

Belgium is among the European countries that are the most affected by allergic rhinitis. Pollen grains and fungal spores represent important triggers of symptoms. However, few studies have investigated their real link with disease morbidity over several years. Based on aeroallergen counts and health insurance datasets, the relationship between daily changes in pollen, fungal spore concentrations and daily changes in reimbursable systemic antihistamine sales has been investigated between 2005 and 2011 in the Brussels-Capital Region. A Generalized Linear Model was used and adjusted for air pollution, meteorological conditions, flu, seasonal component and day of the week. We observed an augmentation in drug sales despite no significant increase in allergen levels in the long term. The relative risk of buying allergy medications associated with an interquartile augmentation in pollen distributions increased significantly for Poaceae, Betula, Carpinus, Fraxinus and Quercus. Poaceae affected the widest age group and led to the highest increase of risk which reached 1.13 (95% CI [1.11–1.14]) among the 19- to 39-year-old men. Betula showed the second most consistent relationship across age groups. Clear identification of the provoking agents may improve disease management by customizing prevention programmes. This work also opens several research perspectives related to impact of climate modification or subpopulation sensitivity.  相似文献

Two sex steroid hormone combinations which have been used clinically as tests for detection of early pregnancy were examined for embryotoxic effects in macaques and baboons. Norethisterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol (NEA + EE) were orally administered to rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys and baboons at dosages ranging from one to 1,000 times the human dose equivalent (HDE) during days 20-50 of pregnancy. Progesterone and estradiol benzoate (P + EB) were delivered by two to six intramuscular injections to rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys between gestational days 20 and 35 at 0.1-25 X HDE. Fetuses were examined following cesarean section at 100 +/- 2 days (NEA + EE) or at term (P + EB). The results showed increased embryolethality over controls at 100-1,000 X HDE (NEA + EE) and at 10 and 25 X HDE (P + EB). Besides growth retardation, isolated cases of minor nongenital malformations were observed only in cynomolgus monkeys following treatment with both hormone combinations mainly at embryolethal dose levels and were considered spontaneous in nature. Virilization of female cynomolgus fetuses following NEA + EE treatment was manifested as two cases of clitoral enlargement in the 300 X HDE group and two cases of increased anogenital distance with reduced vaginal opening in the 1,000 X HDE group. The highest dose of NEA + EE was also maternally toxic, as two maternal deaths occurred at the end of the treatment period. One dead female cynomolgus fetus exposed to P + EB (10 X HDE) also exhibited masculinized external genitalia.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is known to alter carbohydrate utilization and specific steps in lipid metabolism. TCDD interacts with estradiol in mobilizing specific fatty acids in chickens that may be a cause of cranial/beak malformations in this species. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that TCDD simultaneously alters critical fatty acid mobilization during early pregnancy and determine if those changes correlate to morphological defects of the developing neural tube in the nonhuman primate. Cynomolgus macaques were treated with a single dose of 4 microg/kg body weight (BW) TCDD on gestational day 15 or 20. Pregnancies were terminated by hysterectomy on gestational day 24-26 and embryos were examined to determine morphology of the developing neural tube. Maternal blood samples were used for fatty acid quantification. Embryos exhibited cellular changes, mainly increased cell death, and intercellular spaces in the neural tube, suggestive of an adverse effect on the developing nervous system. Significant decreases on fatty acid composition were found on some of the eight classes of lipids analyzed. Particularly, a decrease was observed in the n-3 (40-60%) and n-6 (47-75%) essential fatty acids in treated pregnancies compared to untreated controls. These data demonstrate the effect of TCDD in decreasing maternal levels of n-3 and n-6 fatty acids that are considered necessary for normal development in mammals. Since neural tube development is dependent, in part, on n-3 and n-6 fatty acids, it is possible that the limitation of these essential fatty acids in plasma resulted in the observed detrimental effects on early brain development.  相似文献

A kinetic study was conducted on the effect of heating in the temperature range of 75-110 degrees C on the trypsin inhibition activity of ovomucoid. Heat treatment of isolated ovomucoid resulted in a time-dependent decrease in trypsin inhibition activity that could accurately be described by a first-order kinetic model. The magnitude and the temperature dependence of the rate constants was affected by the pH during heat treatment. The heat stability of ovomucoid was the lowest at pH 7.6. Heat treatments intended to decrease the trypsin inhibition activity should therefore be carried out as soon as possible after laying, because the ovomucoid was inactivated faster at the pH of fresh egg white (pH 7.6). The presence of the other egg white constituents decreased the heat stability of ovomucoid compared to that of the model system of ovomucoid in buffer, presumably by the formation of ovomucoid-lysozyme complexes in the former.  相似文献

When populations are exposed to environmental pollutants, growth and reproduction might be strongly reduced due to an increased detoxification effort. Sublethal metal pollution is therefore to be expected to cause the same selection pressure as a low resource habitat and might alter the reproductive strategy. Optimality models of life history theory predict that when resource availability is reduced, growth and reproductive output are reduced and that the release of fewer but larger propagules will be favoured. This was tested by applying a life history model to reproductive trait measurements in six populations of the wolf spider Pirata piraticus in which the assumptions of the model are satisfied. Internal Cd, Cu and Zn body burden were strongly correlated with each other, and differed strongly between the populations, indicating consistently differing metal exposure at the different sites. Pb levels were extremely variable within each population and did not differ between the populations. Females from populations with high concentrations of the first three heavy metals showed a strongly reduced reproductive output and fecundity, indicating a high reduction in resource availability due to detoxification processes. Egg size in contrast was negatively correlated with fecundity and reproductive output and as a consequence positively related with internal metal burden. Our results are thus in strong agreement with the predictions of the optimality models and confirm the benefits of a larger propagule size when resource availability is reduced.  相似文献
